Epididymitis: cause, sign & symptom
Epididymitis is the inflammation of the epididymis, a coiled tube located at the back of the testicle that stores and transports sperm. It can be caused by bacterial infections, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), or other factors. Symptoms may include testicular pain, swelling, redness, and fever. If you suspect you have epididymitis, it's important to seek medical attention for diagnosis and treatment.
The cause, signs, and symptoms of epididymitis are as follows:
Cause
Bacterial Infection:Most commonly, epididymitis is caused by a bacterial infection. These infections can occur due to urinary tract infections (UTIs) that spread to the epididymis, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as chlamydia or gonorrhea, or other types of bacteria.
Signs & Symptoms
Testicular Pain:
The primary symptom is often a sharp or dull pain in one or both testicles. The pain may start gradually and intensify over time.
Swelling:
The affected testicle or scrotum may become swollen and tender to the touch.
Redness:
The scrotal skin can become red and warm.
Fever:
Some individuals may develop a fever along with other symptoms.
Discharge:
If the cause is an STI, there may be discharge from the penis.
Painful Urination:This can be a symptom if an infection is related to a UTI or STI.
If you suspect you have epididymitis or experience any of these symptoms, it's crucial to consult a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment. Ignoring epididymitis can lead to complications, including abscess formation or chronic epididymal pain.
