How can identical twins can be so different? How do our biology, environments and experiences shape our development? This introductory talk about epigenetics helps explain how all of this works. Epigenetic mechanisms are internal biological processes that allow for us, and other organisms, to change and adapt to the external world. The field is more exciting than ever, with new technologies enabling us to learn more about how epigenetics is involved in cancer, mental health, and crop science, among other scientific fields. This speaker aims to plant the seeds of curiosity into every listener with this talk, empower them with scientific knowledge, and inspire them to use this knowledge to make the world a better place. Natalia Husby is a UD alumna who studied neuroscience and behavioral epigenetics for her master's degree. She now works for EpiCypher - a biotechnology company that develops research tools for epigenetics. When she’s not nerding out over science, she enjoys reading, hiking and spending quality time with her family, friends, and dogs. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
