This has quickly become one of my favorite guitar “pron” channels. Honest opinions throughout. If you don’t like something you just flat out say so. Also no attempts to BS the audience if you aren’t sure of something. You just say “I don’t really know” and move on. Authenticity at its finest. Quite a breath of fresh air. Keep it up!
My guess is when you removed the pup you pulled the wires away from where they were crossed fixing the issue. Great vid Colin, that is a fantastic looking guitar! all the best mate.
I love your honesty on your guitar playing as it lets me know that am not as rubbish as I thought when I struggle to get certain things right and I shouldn’t give myself such a hard time when learning new things that seem to come naturally to what seems to be everyone else but me.
I am fortunate and/or stupid enough to own a number of Epiphones and Gibsons. I love a 335 style guitar and the Epis are just as much fun as the Gibsons, if not more enjoyable as they cost less. I recently picked up a new Epi Noel Gallagher Riviera and it's just fantastic. The artist endorsement helps remind me that I am playing an actual real worthy guitar and not a lesser budget brand, so much more bang for the buck than a Gibson. Love the videos, keep 'em coming.
Like you I wasn’t a fan of the ES 335 (or so I thought) but the look of the raspberry tea figured Epi es335 (2022 model) looked just too good. I had it for some time and commented everywhere that while it was superbly made I couldn’t find the sound I liked. Then after a while I played with the setup. Adjusted the pick up height etc. And found the sweet spot. It’s phenomenal. One of my favs of around 25 guitars. And it really feels a quality guitar.
@@theguitaristas My fav part of your vids is getting a chance to jam with you brother. I have learned many riffs just by slowing you down and playing the matching game:)) Bless you brother, and as we say in the hills of West Virginia USA "Keep on keepin' on" Rock on!
"I've just pulled the socket out...................TWAT". I'm not even 5 minutes in and already half of my lunch has landed on the floor, hilarious. Thanks for that Colin, you've already made my Friday afternoon and I've still got 55 minutes to go.
Wow, a full hour of content. You're making my Fridays even better than before. I'm sure you're correct that the problem with that pot was a wiring issue, probably corrected when you moved the pickup wires, so if it starts acting up again you should be able to fix it just by remelting the connections. That's a beautiful guitar. I like my pre inspired by Gibson 335 very much, but I'm still kind of envious of that one. Nothing wrong with the SG and amp either. The brand also matters to me. It just makes a difference to me that my 335 comes from the Gibson company even if it doesn't say it on the headstock. Lastly, I believe Wilkinson makes all of Epiphone's vintage style tuners, so the only difference should be the name stamped on them. Thanks as always for the video.
In on time today, thanks boss. Listening to the cricket with one ear... Excellent stuff! Maybe you should take a long walk down the hall of mirrors and have a good look at yourself :)
I bought this model over a year ago. I like this guitar very much. The shop I went to had a Sire H7 in stock and that's what I went to check out. The Sire was nice but I left with the Epiphone. I would like to see you review a Sire. I enjoy your reviews very much and over the last year I have bought 2 SG's because in one video you recommended if you haven't tried a SG, you should. I tried one and afterwards I told myself why didn't I try one years ago.
I have 13 guitars now and this ES 335 by Epiphone is my absolute fave ....no flaws ....the red one you had i thought was great and you played it so well ...cheers
I also had a 4-10 Blues Deville and loved it but alas, the weight was the reason I ended up selling it. Damn you gravity! I pick up my Epi 335 more than my Gibson one. I feel more relaxed and can concentrate more on my playing with the Epi than fretting about trying not to damage the pricey Gibson. Nice video. Ramble on my friend. It's all good! Great playing too!
Love that, glad you're making the long videos still. I had a postive experience with Guitar Guitar this week. My Grestch sem-hollow that I bought used from them in January developed a switch fault and had a dodgy master volume pot. Within a day of me dropping it into the Edinburgh shop they had replaced both (feels like with superior parts, CTS pot etc). Still under warranty so all free too.
Haha… your clip of changing the pickups in the Cherry one you had is EXACTLY why I’m leaving the pickups in and just ordered a Bigsby B7 and Vibramate. Roll on the Oasis flutters 😂
I have the exact same 335 and LOVE it stock! I had a MIM Blues Deville that I shellacked…it looked incredible! And on the few occasions when I could open it up it sounded glorious! But I reluctantly sold it because it was like owning a sports car that you could never drive out of 1st or 2nd gear. I’m one of those people who wasn’t fond of the drive channel, but you’ve got some magic fairy dust Colin because that SG sounded so sweet through that thing! Cheers my friend!
1:01:37 Hi Colin, I really enjoyed the new format. Both portions were interesting and informative. Keep it up and I’ll anxiously be awaiting next week’s addition.
Colin, if youve ever worked on motorcycles you might have encountered the cable lubing tool that clamps over the cable end and the other side adapts to the red straw that comes with spray cans of the various lubes (speedo, brakes, shifter, clutch cable grease and so forth.) There is in fact such a very similar doo-dad for pots to lube/clean them in situ. The one end slides over the the pot shaft and self seals against the threads, the other end accomodates the red straw from the DeOxit spray can. It forces cleaner down the gap between the pot bushing and the shaft. Granted it sounds more like that bridge volume pot is actually dodgy but you never know what a shot of contact cleaner might accomplish
Great show as always, I will say I enjoy modding my Tele’s, Strat’s & LP’s but those hollow bodies are a Bear to work on! Your video’s did help me stumble through working on my D’Anlelico. Cheers!!
I REALLY ENJOY your presentation on everything you do. I find watching your videos are a great barometer to tell me how chilled out I am. You’re certainly not Steve Vai making me feel inadequate as a player are you! Lofl as friends do. You make me feel like a friend in his or my basement showing me a new guitar. By the end of your videos by watching your hands and listening I will hear everything the tone/volume pots do clean and dirty, if there’s an issue with the nut, bridge, tuners etc you’ll tell me. If you don’t go into detail about a particular piece I feel that I can safely assume that part is in proper working order and feels good. I prefer your opinion more than most actually. I happen to own a 33 piece Epi collection with some great Squires and other brands too but nothing bought because of the status presumption that comes with it and I have many friends that won’t pick up an Epiphone or a Squire because it’s an Epi or a Squire and it could possibly be the coolest guitar they’ve ever played, heck they don’t know. The next thing you know I get a call (I just got another yesterday) of a brand snob that has an important gig or session and they want to borrow my Epi or Squire. I have some very, very nice ones. I actually own this 335 in Rasberry Tea burst and it’s currently my favorite through my Hot Rod Deluxe and my Marshall JCM 2000 DSL40 with 5 good pedals bul no KLON or anything like that. I love what you do… keep it up and I’ll see you next week RickDaBassPlaya
The Indian laurel board look better than I thought when I got mine 2 years ago. It's dark now on parts where I play the most, it's kinda personalized now. I changed the bridge to Gotoh zinc only because I don't like the wire Epiphone's has. But there's really nothing wrong with it. I'll probably change it to a gotoh locking tuner at some point. If anyone is going to buy this, make sure you visit a tech to have this fully setup. I know to do this but not every one can and that's okay. Make sure they do full setup from fret levelling to nut filing. Not kidding, it plays the same as my buddies' US guitar (I setup that too so that's obvious, they got same care). But yes, the fret ends of this guitar is so good out of the factory, it's hammered down properly so you won't notice frets popping out.
The logo/name on the headstock does indeed carry weight. That's just how it is. I love Squier guitars especially the ones with the thinner bodies and slimmer necks. My favorite guitar is a Squier strat partscaster I knitted together using a Bullet loaded body, Classic Vibe neck, Fender vintage tuners and a Fender ultra string tree. The Squier is on a stand next to my Fender Standard strat. The Fender gets noticed right away whereas my favorite guitar the Squier that's made from 100 percent FMIC sourced parts is overlooked. Cheers!
Really would like to see a breakdown on the new Sheraton's Epiphone put out - as a lefty, pickings are slim, but those particular models stick out w/ lefty options.
You know Colin watching you every week has inspired me to try my hand at a RU-vid channel. I own approximately 35 guitars and seriously would like to review them for folks. Like you I’m not a youngster (68), just learning the in ‘s and out of filming and editing. I’ve got Gibson’s, Epi’s, Fenders Dan Electro’s etc. Not including my acoustic collection. Maybe you can give me some pointers over on the paid subscription channel. But as usual cheers mate for another great vid.
Col, braided cable shorting across. Gibson went to plastic tubing over the braided cable. Later cables and 4 core cables loose the outer (cheaper). Worth checking the solder joints if you change the caps. Have fun, SteveH
I got the Epiphone Joe Bonamassa ES-335 and it genuinely impressed me. I wrote off Epiphone for years but am a big fan now…I may even be more excited by Epiphone’s releases than Gibson’s.😅 Truly awesome guitars and a great value.
A lot of people are going to say lay off the sauce, Colin, before you diagnose wiring problems, but I'm not one of them. You just keep tipping them back and getting your discounts. I was playing this exact 335 as i was watching this, and i will never get rid of it, i love it so much. Like i said, it's Alex Lifeson in a bottle. I like the subplot diversion section with the SG. Please do more. I really want to see those happy surprises when you root around in the back of your subterranean lair and pair up guitars and amps that you even forgot you had. Via con Dios.
I watched this week's video on my tv so I'm a little late getting to comment. Just wanted to drop in and say that I love the new direction you're going in. A man can never have enough waffles!!! Thanks for doing what you do...see ya' next Friday!!!✌️✌️✌️
Hi, I am around your age and I still have this ridiculous craving for buying gear. I have done it all of my life. I work on all of amps and guitars myself. It's funny, I have every expensive guitar by Gibson and Fender and top of the line amps and yet I am a half arsed guitar player. Everything I play is pretty much rubbish but I enjoy doing it. There's something about your accent that is always mesmerizing . It's like listening to ASMR. There's just something about the way you do your videos that captivates me like Lyle Caldwell from Psionic Audio on RU-vid. I could watch you guys for hours. I definitely must have something wrong with me to sit for a few hours and watch guitar porn. Your videos in other words are fantastic and entertaining and informative. Keep up the videos cheers mate from Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada Michel Newell
Haha! Another great episode Col, & don’t worry, I think we’ve all gotta little bit of “snob” in us! I’m from Los Angeles, a bit away from the “south”, but when it comes to things like Nascar, we say “we all gotta little bit of red neck in us.” lol, I’ve never been a 335 guy myself, but being a big Gibson player, I think “snob”, is a badge well-earned my brotha! I mostly have played Ibanez (cat killin) machines, but my favorite guitar is my “good-wood”, era 97 Les Paul Studio! Heavier than a f-kin Cadillac, yes, but man that guitar speaks! Thanx again Col!!
Hey Colin . Thanks again for your entertaining videos . I usually view them whilst 'winding down' after yet another stressful shift . Waffle on as much as you please . This one was outstanding for me , as I've been the proud custodian of a 1996 Epi Sheraton II since brand new , and same for a 2013 SGJ , except mine was white . Not so white anymore , but worn in all the right places for all the right reasons . Cheers mate , keep it up !
hopefully it was just a dirty pot! I'm with you on the 335's, I think they are cool but not my first pick. You made it sound nice as always, great way to enjoy my morning coffee.
Colin. The Epiphone pickups likely plug into the volume pots, either with three or four conductor quick connect plugs if push pull. That’s what the big access is for, to pass the connectors through. When I first saw in previous video I thought the plug isn’t seated fully into the socket on the pot. Just needs a push with a little screwdriver through F hole to seat it. Hope you sort it. Cheers.
I took a Brite scrubby pad for dish washing and lightly buffed the neck on mine which removed the sticky gloss and turned into a warm, satin feeling neck..huge upgrade in my view..took about 3 minutes to do it. They're those green pads you find on the backside of sponges often. I also switch it to flatwound strings which more and more I'm starting to love.
My best friend Mark was a drummer. We used get together and noodle frequently. Best times ever.Noodle on bro. The reason i keep returning to watch and listen is you dont seem to know how good you are. Clever or brilliant I'm not sure. Carry on please.
My inspired by 335 had similar fault and it came and went. I suspect the switch was touchy. Rather than return it on warranty I used your previous video to assist me installing the Monty’s Guitar loom. The video and comments were a massive help. I made some tools to assist and the sound difference is amazing. Well worth it.
Damn…loved this one Colin. The long format along with the commentary on your noodling, so good for me as an aspiring noodler, lol. You don’t realize how inspiring it is for someone like me that practices every day and at times feels like I’m not making progress. To see someone like you struggle with learning songs and licks, it gives me hope. If all I watch is clean playing after a while I’m like well fuck, I just don’t have what it takes. To know that you have to practice and struggle too is incredibly inspiring to me. And now I want a 335…lol I am over the GAS phase of guitar playing, but your videos make me want these things!
Glad to see you finally got one you liked. I have the '61 SG, the 50's Les Paul and the Riviera - ALL great. Epiphone are killing it right now. I'm going to the shop next week to look at a 335. Just look mind you :) :) :)
Famous last words 😂 My Inverness Green 335 was the result of “just having a look.” 😂 I actually went in to look at a 339, but when I pulled the 335 off the wall my wife says “Ooh, that’s a pretty one!” which I of course took as blanket permission 😂😂. It didn’t help that it played really amazing. I didn’t buy it right away, but it burned a hole in my brain for weeks, finally I had to get it. So glad I did, I just love it. I’m a guy that loves to mod guitars, I have no desire to change a thing apart from the knobs. Had to put reflectors on.
I seem to get lured by the cheaper price and i always wind up installing better pots and wire harness. On the good side ive learned a lot about guitar repair, but i dont think im saving any money in the long run! As always love your reviews!
Totally agree that for the money, the Epi is untouchable for the 335 vibe. This one may convert you yet! 😁👍 They're also a modders paradise as you've previously fully demonstrated...
Lots of my favorite RU-vidrs having been doing 335s this week. I don't have one, I feel left out. It's Friday and Colin's doing one. If Chris Buck and Eric Haugen do one today, I'll have no choice but to go out and buy one.
From your description it would seem Epiphone is going away from their D shaped neck which I don't care for at all. This seems like a great guitar for what it is. Nice weight, tone, playability and looks with a decent price. Thanks for the in depth review.
In 2003 I bought an SG got it home and realised that bridge pickup didn't work ! Next weekend took it back to the shop where they said 'we can fix it for the next week or pick out another SG [there was 10 in stock ] As I was booked at a studio on the Sunday I wanted the SG so I picked out another SG .Have never regretted it as I still have this guitar and folks still say what a lovely guitar it is !
Colin, I’d love to see a video of you diving into the notion kf “buying one Gibson vs. multiple Epiphones”. Cheers! Love your videos. Drew from Georgia, USA
Alvin Lee... you are right, amazing player. I love that 335, it's just beautiful. Really good show this week Colin! Too funny the way that pot fixed itself. The Fender was sweet. That's a cool new bit for your show. Thanks and CHEERS!
Great guitar, have the same one. The tuning pegs on mine went south with gear slippage. Had to replace them with Gotahs. Other than that I love it. Even like the pups in it. Thanks for sharing! :)
I bought that amp new a few years ago and I love it! You need the foot switch for it so you can switch between the clean and drive channel with your foot and add more drive with the foot pedal too! Great amp!!!
I have never owned a hollow body because I was afraid of the feedback. BUT...I am giving it serious consideration after hearing these videos. The harmonics just seem a bit deeper, nice and thick. This is a great video and I am so glad to spend an hour with you each week just talking shit about guitars, gear and life in general. Keep up the great work!!
Cheers man thanks fro the support! 😁👍 I think the semi hollow like this are less of a problem than perhaps the casino... but yes definitely something nice going on with the harmonics and worth embracing that!
oh Colin, great chops mate, that intro sounded great, that bend in the 15th- B. Just arrived home, pour some coke, turned on the pc, just to watch your video. Made my night. Cheers.
“Kids, Going out is overrated”. Love it 🤣. I totally agree. Cheers Colin. And your playing through that 4x10 DeVille…… some tasty vibe-y stuff over that loop! At times you reminded me of early Santana.
I had a 2014 Gibson SGJ in fireburst. Great guitars that have actually appreciated quite a bit nowadays. I preferred mine because it didn't have the weird black covers on there and it had the 120th anniversary inlay at the 12th fret. I loved the way that neck felt, loved the 24 frets, and the finish which actually wore down fairly easily to show some serious mojo!
How you doing Colin ,ive got the raspberry epiphone 335 but put Gibson pups in it but it sounded great with the stock pups ,keep the reviews coming dude 😊
Great job, love the longer content format! I watch every minute, of every one of your videos, usually twice! I'll also extend my viewing of your videos by watching them in pieces, over a period of two or three days, so more content is great for me. Do you typically use a lot of "Drive" from your Rat and Soul Food pedals? My main amp is a Marshall 800, so I use all my OD pedals as clean boosts only, with the "Drive" on 0, and "Level" to taste. So, there's no additional "Drive" from the pedal, just boosting the already overdriven signal from the amp. This is the best way to use OD pedals with a Marshall, imo, or any already overdriven amp really,.... which a Marshall 800 circuit certainly is. Looking forward to next week Colin!
Cheers man thanks for the support it’s really appreciated! 😁🙏 I guess normally use a fair bit of drive on the pedals as I’m not a typically high gain player.
@@theguitaristas Yeah man, I'm not a high gain player either, Classic Rock and Blues are my thing. I first got interesting in guitar when I saw The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, I was 8 years old. I saw cool guys playing guitar and girls screaming,.... I thought I'd like to do that! lol Best Regards, David from sunny Florida.
I’ve got 32 Epi’s and I have found that frequently if the person/people working that day feel they have a special piece they will put on better parts or maybe they just run out of the Epi parts and put Gibson parts on. They come from different places I know but my Epi SG has BurstBuckers and a couple have upgraded tuners, bridges etc. I love Epi’s, they allow me to have a collection instead of a couple of guitars
Col I like the new format - it was interesting how you recommended a song and player and then you improvised on the lick. Very nice! I checked it out - great tune great player! Also a bit about pedals then amps and not just the guitars. Personally I am a big fan of your ‘story telling’ lead style and your stuff downstairs reminded me a lot of Robby Krieger another SG fan and a big time storytelling guitarist. As I say I like the evolution of the show and like other people an hour plus makes it more of an event and something to look forward to! Keep it up!!
Wiring on the bridge pickup shorting across two lugs on the pot ,possibly the outer earth sheathing when you moved the pickup it’s come away from the other lug ..I had a similar problem with a Vintage brand version of the 335 .least it’s sorted with no major problem to fix it .win win 😂
I bought a new condition, badly finished, Heavy, 2013 Gibson LPJ a few years ago for $1,000 Aust. Sold it to my brother. Missed out on a 2013 SGJ for $800, locally 😢 New condition Epi 56 goldtop, p90 LP & beat up old Epi Goth SG G400 are both amazing & cheap! 2 great guitars I'll be hanging on to... Many many more too. Love your channel bro! Cheers
Aloha and Mahalo Colin! In 2021 I played an 2019 Epiphone Cherry 335 and Sunburst 330. I didn't care for the 335 heavy and dead sounding. 330 I liked. Only played both acoustically
Interesting turn of events! If it wasn't simply some dirt in the pot, then I wonder if perhaps a stray strand of the braided wire from the pickup was barely touching the pot at times causing a short? When you took out the pups and pulled on the pickup wires, you may have pulled it away from the pot far enough to prevent the short.
