They’ve finally figured-out that the headstock is a big-deal to people. Especially at the new plus-$1,000 price-tag. I’ve been playing Fenders for a long-time after getting some awful Gibsons in the 90’s, but I’d almost take a chance on this one.

I think that is the segment Gibson is going to reach more consistently with this level of Epi. Maybe a few people will go Epi and save some money but I think more likely they will inspire people to spend a little more instead of a somewhat less expensive Fender or Epi model. They are producing more of their USA pickups so cost per unit drops who knows they may have a better margin on these new models than some of their lower end Gibsons

Looks interesting - will try one when they get here (HK). I have a 1968 LP Custom I bought off a buddy in '74 back in NZ and it's stayed with me till now - my 'reference' for Customs. I tried the Epiphone Custom here a while back, I think it's solid mahogany (no weight relief?) from just a few years ago, and I liked it but went for their Cantrell 'Wino' in the end - nice ebony board and got it at a reasonable discount (+ HK is a duty free port so no sales tax / import duty mark-up) and with a bit of modding - Monty's Bethnal Greens, Bone Nut, '50s Wiring - it's a perfect 'add on' for me - big fan of Peter Green and it does the trick. Epiphone are turning out some quality instruments but generally (like some of the PRS stuff from Indonesia) the pick-ups and wiring are not terrific . . . their '59 is also pretty nice, I see they've now stuck the Gibson headstock on it and custom-buckers but the baseball bat '50s neck is a non-starter for me.

Had a couple of epiphone LPs before, but the first American made Gibson LP that I could afford was a 17 tribute. To me, it sounded better and felt better than the Epies. Has the same pick ups as this one you talked about and it stays in tune very well. Not everyone feels the same though. ✌🏻 peace out, Robert

I remember one time I went to a bar to hear a band play. They noticed me and asked me if I wanted to play. I didn't have my guitar with me. So they lended me an Eppiphone. When I played it, I was not impressed at all. That was a few years ago. For the price they want for them now, they better be way better then the guitar I played that night. So I guess you can say after 20 years going to Open Mics and Jams that's why I still have an acoustic Fender and a Squier Telecaster. But I'm still happy with what I got. So Rock On !

I'm going to guess it is solid maple, but not pretty and/or multiple pieces. Since they aren't doing any bursts the solid paint would hide any ugly spots so a veneer would be unnecessary. Ultimately my concern is if they'll actually get the fretwork right consistently! I might buy one if they did it in a 70's tobacco burst...

Les Paul designed a solid-body electric guitar in 1941, but by the time it was ready for production by Gibson in 1952, Leo Fender had already mass-produced the Fender Broadcaster four years earlier. I like them all, but since my $$ has other priorities, I like to build DIY kit replicas. A 1953 Gretsch duo Jet copy is hopefully my next project. Thanks Robert, for sharing your time and knowledge. 💯🎸👍.

I still have my SG. (That guitar was a gift from my mother for my 30th birthday.) The Faded Series, they were called. They got updated and BRIEFLY replaced by the J Series (they were called the LPJ and the SGJ models), and then those were discontinued after a couple of years in favor of pushing their new Tribute Series, who’s pricing started at about $799 at that time. The J Series guitars were actually really good. The Tribute Series were GARBAGE. I see why Gibson made the decision that they did. LOL 🙄

The biggest change is the "slim taper 60s" neck becomes a "50s rounded medium C". I owned the previous ebony model, but never got used to the slim taper neck, which was oddly flat in the palm, so I sold the guitar recently. I'm interested in the new version in white, but I'm going to wait for some reviews that describe the new 50s neck, i.e. just how chunky it is.

I have a Gibson Les Paul Custom Plus that was a special-order guitar. I'm not totally thrilled with it. Fact is, I don't play it. I have a Gibson Les Paul Standard Plus that I play 95% of the time. The guitar was purchased from a music store in Canada. I called Gibson to verify that the guitar was authentic before I purchased it. I've had five US made Les Paul guitars. Two Studios, a Standard, Standard Plus and the Custom Plus. I sold the two Studio models. The Standard is the best guitar of them all. The Custom looks great, but the Standard has the best feel and playability. They've all been setup by my guitar tech. Recently purchased a Gibson 335 Figured. I'm not thrilled with the neck or the frets on it. I'm considering having my guitar tech shave the neck down and re-fret it. Another case bound guitar.

Nitrocellulose has its advantages, but Gibson has done polyurethane a real disservice over the years by promoting nitro as the “superior” finishing method. Both nitro and poly have their advantages, and one doesn’t necessarily look any better than the other. PRS uses nothing BUT poly, and I don’t think anybody will argue about how beautiful most PRS guitars are.
@drippinglass

@@RobertWJackson I think PRS has been using nitro on their Private Stock models if you request it recently. But yeah, I wanted a white LPC. Not a cream or yellow. I purchased a new in 2022 alpine white Epi 'Inspired by Gibson' Les Paul custom for $969 Canadian. Apart from the Gibson Pups and the case, as well as the (for me) mildly different headsock, it has all of the same features and appointments as these new models. I don't see these differences being worth the nearly $1K CAD increase in price. I already had several generic LP-style cases, and while the Epi Probuckers sound fine to my unprofessional ears, I could replace them for a fraction of this price markup. YMMV.

The regular priced ones always get killer reviews as is. If you get Gibson pups and switches and they are made in Epis high end plant generally I'm fine with the bumped up price. However twice as much for a Firebird for a paint job ain't happening. My 59 and 335 are both high end ones no complaints other than weight.

I don't think it's a veneer in this case because this particular guitar comes in either solid white or black not a translucent burst finish. So there's no need to hide a lower end maple cap with a Triple A maple veneer. The paint job will do the trick on its own.

SAE is usa spec., metric is Korean/Indonesian etc. The top is a maple sandwich affair. It sounds like a good deal until you get to the poly finish, which Epi is notorious for slathering on thick, almost like it's dipped. The black one in front of me is measuring 0.107 on the thickness gauge, which is atrocious ! The neck joint is long tenon with glue that is similar to Titebond. If you ever have to remove the neck it's going to be a B!tch, with a double capital B. I figure I can reduce the weight of this guitar by ¾ pound after the glue and finish are removed. 😂 The next typical letdown is the soft stop tail and bridge. I'm already seeing the first signs of the arch relaxing with 10s on, it got worse when we went to 11s The setup is good, the electronics are fine, and it would be an ideal stage guitar instead of risking a Gibson LP to theft or the dreaded headstock snap. My advice ? Get a used cheaper Epi and upgrade the electronics, hardware, and setup. At $1300, this guitar isn't cheap enough to toss out for most, and will not hold it's value in the first few years. After 10 or 15 years, it may find a second life after Gibson LP's hit the $4000 and over price tag, but that's a gamble when there are hundreds of USA SG's at the same price point or lower.

My pair of Tribute LPs have both been great, and not expensive at $600 (Tribute T in honeyburst with a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates set) and $700 (70s Tribute goldtop with mini-hums.) My complaint with Gibson's Tribute line was how inconsistent it became; 60s Tributes with humbuckers, 70s ones with p90s, it made no historical sense. I wish they had made more sense, like if the 70s Tributes were based on the early 70s sparkle finish Deluxe LPs with mini humbuckers, for example. As far as bad low end Gibsons, you could do a lot worse than Tributes or Faded Series, and they did - with the M2 line. Tried a used LP one at GC (looked more like a Gibson Challenger ripoff) and even though it was $250 I had to pass. Terrible fretwork, cheap hardware, weirdly lightweight, made my 81 Sonex seem masterbuilt. Can't believe Gibson greenlit that thing.

Yeah, but the EC-1000 cut a BIG corner in the fact that it’s about 2/3 the thickness of the actual ESP Eclipse. The EC-1000’s are nice guitars, but I’ve never considered them as a viable alternative to the ESP’s for that reason. Except that the ESP’s are as much if not MORE expensive than the Gibsons, and mostly made in Japan instead of the U.S. Epiphone also owns and operates their overseas factory in China, whereas ESP outsources their import guitars. I’m always skeptical about defending Gibson these days, but in this case it’s simply a matter of taste.

Strongly disagree with your opinion about the Tribute. I own a Tribute as well as much higher end Les Paul models. IMO the Tribute is a great guitar for the price (before being discontinued), it sounds and plays fantastic. The finish doesn’t feel cheap to me rather it feels played and worn in. I think Gibson only discontinued it because it took to many sales from the more expensive Studio.

The Tributes were no hindrance to the Studio models. Gibson didn’t just suddenly make that determination and decide to axe the Tributes after more than a decade of production.
