Thank you, Robert. What kind of idiot thinks it's OK to return 70-75% of his purchases? Maybe he needs somebody else to tell him what gear he actually should buy since he doesn't have a f**king clue what he should be buying.

"Anything by Hughes & Kettner is rubbish." Alex Lifeson, the poor man had to endure Tri-amps & even endorse his purple back lit signature model. No wonder Rush never had any success. (What a ridiculous comment.) As always, love the channel Robert. Thank you.

I have returned one guitar one time. It was during the pandemic when shops were low. I played a solid wood acoustic at GC, but they didnt have financing, so I went home and ordered one from an online retailer that I have an open account with. I ordered a cheaper model that had laminate back and sides, because the solid ones were out of stock. It was beautiful, but didnt feel nearly as special as the one i played in store. I returned it a few days later without any problems, but I felt really bad about it. That is my only instrument return. I did get a solid body acoustic that I love, afyer the supply chain crisis was over.

If you return 60%+ of what you buy (by your own counting), you are wasting the stores time and resources. The sales people won't want to work with you bc they know you will return it. They don't ban people from shopping, just put you on a blacklist for returning items.

When I worked in a guitar shop - If you returned 2 items just because you 'changed your mind' or bought the wrong item against staff advice - We banned you. You obviously are not happy with the quality of what you purchase and therefore should not be buying anything else. There is such a thing as customer quality. Low quality customers are not worth my time.

Robert, I love and appreciate your honesty so I guess that’s why I watch. Those kind of people ruin it for all the businesses, the workers and the real guys that shop there for their treasures. Your brutal honesty is hysterical but needed. If I was him I wouldn’t be able to look you in the eye even while watching your podcast. Keep the good stuff coming thank you

I've played guitar since 1978. I've never returned equipment or an instrument to a music store. EVER. Yes, I have bought a few clunkers over the years, but that's on me, not the store. It's my responsibility to do my homework, and to try out the gear in the store before purchase. Buying a piece of crap is a learning experience. If I take it back I'm off the hook, and don't learn anything.

I buy guitars to play them, not resell them, so resale value is never a factor for me And if I did sell, I would consider the time I owned the guitar/time spent playing it, etc as part of the value But maybe that’s just me. And I own two Epis

We gotta do what makes sense to us and I operated that way for a long while. About 8 years ago I got a Reverb account and began to buy, sell, and trade gear with the idea of limiting my out of pocket. Took a year or so to find a system that worked and since then I have not 'paid' a dollar for anything. Not one guitar on my rack, pedal on one of my boards, or amp I play through is 'worth' less than what I have in them. And I have a lot better gear selection than I did 10 years ago

it's true Gibson USA guitars don't hold their value any better than any other guitar. Custom Shop guitars are a different story.

When I owned a guitar shop in the early 2000's there was a guy I thought was a pretty good customer based on him buy 2 or 3 decent pieces a year .. One day I saw that one guitar he bought was back on the wall so I asked one of the salespeople if they knew what he didn't like about it .. They said that's "what he does" (if his reserve prices weren't met on eBay apprently) .. That was the end of the road for that @sshat .. Next time he went to buy I popped out of my office, and politely explained that there were no returns .. He asked when Fender changed their return policy and I even more politely explained that they hadn't, but he was no longer allowed to return anything to our store for any reason .. Never saw him again .. He started frequenting another shop in town

GC is know for saleling open box merchandise for new and not telling their customers before hand it's open box. It should be returned, especially when it's damaged to the point it doesn't work or is banged up. That's the risk of buying on line from them.

my short stint at GC we had/have a guy(Im sure he still shops there) that constantly bought and returned high end gear. The one salesperson that dealt with him didn't mind cuz his numbers would look good, but us guys in ops had to always put his crap back and now even though it was within the 45 days, its a used instrument. he does this once a month, he's never happy with his gear and won't admit the gear isn't the problem.

I can tell with 3 or 4 stums whether a guitar is right for me, have only returned one and that was recently. A Korina V with bad scratches on both sides of the neck bought online and returned to GC 4 miles from the house. Never would have got past Sweetwater QC by the way. I cant get arrested in a GC, lucky to get a pick. Went in to buy a bass a few years back and ask for advice and couldn't get waited on. Better selection online so I ordered 2 Squires, online GC service is awesome!

I have purchased a lot of gear from my local Canadian Long & McQuaid store over the years. I returned one item after a week, and it was only to upgrade it to the more expensive model. I have had second thoughts about a couple of purchases later on but I have kept them. I have built a good relationship with the people there. If you treat them well, they do the same. In return, they have given me some great deals over the years that saved me quite a bit of money. I might only buy something 50% of the time I walk in. Sometimes I'm just looking for inspiration and come up empty-handed. But they know I mean well and I'm not trying to waste their time. If they don't sell to me today, they will likely sell to me next time. And I don't screw them over by returning it days later.

I remember about 20 years ago, the sales girl who always hooked me up with good deals at GC was almost in tears as I walked in. She said some guy ordered a $7,000 guitar, then brought it back with nothing wrong, on the last day of his return policy. She had a large commission from it, paid her rent and some other things, then found out it was getting pulled back from her.

I've been playing since 1992 and have returned 1 guitar I bought. It was a 7 string Jackson. For 1, if I'm going to drop that kind of money, I do lots and lots of research and always sleep on it before actually pulling the trigger. And 2, I have a good relationship with the stores I deal with and would like to keep it that way.

I just started going to a new Open Mic recently. I met this one guy who told me he has 18 guitars and has very little time to play them. But he loves going out and sings Karaoke. If I was this STUPID CHARACTOR, I would dump Karaoke and start playing my instruments. What would you do ?

If he only plays guitar, I agree with you. But if he’s also a singer, he probably likes singing karaoke for the same reason he likes playing open mics, but for singing purposes.

@@RobertWJackson I know. But to have 18 guitars and never plays them is unreal to me. I only have 2 and I barely miss a day of practice. Plus Karaoke has been trying to put musicians out of work since 1991. Plus another thing is this. Leaving Karaoke 20 years ago for Open Mics helped me become a better guitar player and become a singer and song writer. But some people have different thoughts then me.

Great rant! Especially the used guitar thing. The dealer I buy from once told me " When it comes to new and used, the second you walk out the door with, take it home and play it a few weeks, it's pretty much used, no matter how well you take care of it." A lot of people don't like that, but it's true. Buyer beware, and take the time to try it in the store. I spend well over an hour with a guitar between the sound, fit and finish, and asking questions. Same with amps.

I worked at a pawn shop in Colorado for years people It was normal for people to bring in an item like a TV or a guitar or anything, saying it's brand new. In reality that always meant that it was from one to three months old. If someone said they had something that was like new or they had just bought, that always meant that it was one to three years old. People either really don't understand or lie about what brand new means. I think they say it because it's intellectual laziness. And they are NPCs.

I have a friend who is that "return policy" guy and it is SO fucking annoying!! I don't even work at a guitar shop!! We both deal with the same music store franchise up here in Canada (Long and McQuade) and they are a super cool store that have helped countless musicians purchase gear through their financing program that they would NEVER be able to buy otherwise (myself included)... although employees there don't work on a commission, it still bothers me...and the other thing in this video that pisses me off are the "will it hold it's value?" guys... I have NEVER bought a guitar thinking about its future value, I've always bought them to PLAY them....am I wrong?

The guy who wants to record: I’m using a 12 year old Mac, with GarageBand, and a Presonus FireWire interface. You could probably get newer equipment than that for cheap I can record 4 tracks simultaneously no problem and sounds really good. No point in spending a ton of money on expensive recording gear unless your studio is really expensive. Great results can be had now with inexpensive gear, though it tends to add up either way once you get all the stuff you want I say get the bare minimum of what you need with inexpensive gear and then figure out what you’re lacking and slowly upgrade. By the time you have a room of nice stuff you’ll have learned how to use it all. Home recording is a bottomless pit of gear acquisition!

In my 44 years of playing guitar I have never returned a single thing. Not once! I generally know what I want. Generally I know within seconds playing a guitar whether I'll be happy with it, even before plugging it in. The only impulse buy I ever did was my Orange Dual Terror. I love that little monster. And if I say impulse, I mean that I told the store owner I'd be back the next day with one of my guitars to test. Did so, bought the thing and happy with it.

I appreciate all the concerns in the return rant, and think a 60% return rate is too high. My question: does this still apply with used gear (where there is no open-box penalty)? How do you deal with the constant noise in GC stores that makes it hard to evaluate electric guitars and amps? I bought a used Nashville Telecaster from GC, in "excellent" condition. It came with tons of fret sprout and other issues, all confirmed by the GC staff. I returned it. They still stuck me with the shipping.

The response to the long winded dimwit , who returns 80% of what he buys , was spot on. He is obviously NO musician with any experience otherwise he would have first researched his purchases thoroughly and been educated on the purchase before making it . I have purchased many items from GC over the last several years. My most recent was a discontinued USED Ibanez guitar with powered hum-buckers. I was not familiar the item before I saw it in the store . but after playing it for ten minutes I knew it was a keeper for me. No remorse, No returns, No ignorance. I was happy.
