Today Cory is talking about the ‪@OfficialEpiphone‬ Thunderbird IV Bass. It has Vintage Vibes, Modern Tones, all in an Affordable Package.
The Thunderbird’s unique “reversed” zig-zag body design and the equally distinct headstock was the brainchild of legendary automotive designer and visionary Ray Dietrich who was enlisted by the Kalamazoo factory to bolster the electric guitar line and help solidify the factory’s eminent rank among solid-body electric guitar manufacturers.

Thanks for a great demo. Too many youtube demos seem to be about people showing off their bass skillz rather than playing similar, basic stuff while varying the settings.

I just started playing bass (been a guitarist for the past 15 years) and I don't know what it is about my epi thunderbird but I absolutely love it. I just get this SUPER tight punch when I isolate the neck pickup and a mean growl with just the bridge. I got it for like 300 bucks and I couldn't be happier

Love that bass it self, I've had it for a while and I couldn't be happier with the iconic t bird look. If you want to make it even better, you can change the pickups into the Gibson humbuckers, but over all even with the current pickups it's an awesome bass

This was the only bass that had that plucky/funky sound I wanted. I never felt the need to buy a more expensive Gibson or Fender when this had the The exact sound I was looking for. The only Drawback I can think of is that it’s a heavy instrument. If I was sitting at rehearsal, I was fine … but my shoulder would be sore after a full set on stage.

I bought a used China-made one for 120€ (including a hard case!) at a flohmarkt in a Germany.. the neck is not exactly straight, but it doesn't trouble me when playing..although the huge size and heavy neck, man..the sound is unbelievable. One of the best purchases in my life..

My Epiphone Thunderbird (which I bought 10 or 15 years ago) has the front strap button attached to the body above the neck. I notice yours has the strap button attached to one of the neck bolts. Is that how the bass now comes from the factory or was that a modification? I imagine it helps with the neck-body balance. Mine is neck heavy and the headstock will fall towards the ground unless I hold it in place.

I've just set up a 2009 china model which had that problem. I moved the button to neck bolt position ,as on newer models, much more comfortable. Impressive sounding bass!!

I have an older model, and it has the front strap button attached to the body above the neck as well. I think later models moved the position to fix the neck dive problem.

I don't know what it is about this bass, but as a guitarist who picks up bass guitars in the store every time I go, I still remember picking one of these up like 6 years ago and how it sounded exactly like I thought a bass guitar should sound like. I think I need to get one.

I prefer this to the neck through version. Just seems more comfortable to me. Currently have the Thunderbird Vintage PRO in white and love the tone but the bass is huge with the extended headstock. I'd like to see Epiphone put the PRObucker pickups in the bolt on T-bird. Perfect!

Fr I'd take a bolt-on bass over a set neck any day, changing out the neck when shit hits the fan just seems like a nicd prospect. For now I'm stuck with a beatle bass copy, dinky little thing.

I have one like this, and another Epiphone Tbird - but thát one is the Pro 5string. The Pro basically covers all I need to do on bass, but the regular 4string wasn't really cutting the mustard... Until I converted to fretless! After taking the frets out I darkened the entire fingerboard, and covered it with epoxy. Sanded that to the original radius and polished it up. Now it has a lovely growl, but some really nice mid-high harmonics too... To match the 5 I've strung it as B-E-A-D (so a 5string set, but no G string), and if I bring these two to any gig or studio, I'm good to go.

"The Gibson Thunderbird was introduced in 1963 and was designed by U.S. auto designer Raymond H. Dietrich along with the Gibson Firebird guitar, which it resembles in design, construction, and name. In 1966, Gibson changed the Thunderbird's design and construction. The original Thunderbirds and Firebirds had a "reverse" body, with the treble horn extended and the bass horn recessed. Due to a lawsuit brought by Fender because of the resemblance to the Fender Jazzmaster, the body styles were modified, with the result being called the "non-reverse" body Epiphone Thunderbird The Epiphone Thunderbird IV & V is a budget alternative to the Gibson models and has a maple bolt-on construction onto an alder body. The Epiphone Thunderbird Pro IV & V are closer to their Gibson counterparts with a neck-thru body design and upgraded woods, hardware and electronics."

Bought this as my third ever bass, the main issue I had as a fairly new bassist was its design. It's huge - a little over 46 inches - so I had to spend a bit more on an extreme size gig bag. Transporting it to and from rehearsal can be a pain because it's very dense wood and therefore very heavy. The strings are thin and the action is very low, so actually if you're okay with the size and weight then its playability is great for a beginner.

I have to agree. My friend who was like 6’3 borrowed mine once and said it was the heaviest bass he ever used. This thing was a beast, sound wise, but I’m 5’6…my neck and shoulder would be killing me after a full set on stage.
