Episode 073: BTS Dis-ease REACTION BTS BE Album 

Suga isn't being literal when he talks about "heart disease"...he is talking about feeling that corrupt the heart (fear, hate...). He goes on to say he can't change other people...so he will change himself.

Jhope actually mentioned the song is about the disease of their profession, and also touches upon their workaholism. So this ease (dis ease) due to the pandemic, is making them feel uneasy (dis-ease). Also the song refers to the disease of their minds.

Jimin wrote the bridge on this in less than 10 minutes. He was in the production room, and just started singing something, they told him to repeat it. They liked it so much he wrote the rest. The song is JHope’s, though, as he did the beat, the 90s rap feel, and a lot of the lyrics. This song is about being uncomfortable because you can’t do what you normally do, how that can cause dissatisfaction with your life and how to deal with that feeling.

As RM says in Cypher 4, "I like hate comments better than no comments"...haters just gotta learn to love themselves! You nice, keep going!

Don't try to hard to guess the meaning. İt means whatever you want it to mean, it's the creative freedom BTS created for ARMY. Take whatever heals you. Also because they use a lot of wordplay it is though for people who don't speak korean.

The guys are all serious workaholics. To the point of mental and physical exhaustion. That exhausting routine of “no Christmas off” work has been going on since they were like 17. So now that they have to rest, they don’t know what to do with that feeling, feeling like they need to constantly do something. Jhope said it is like an occupational disease. That feeling of anxiety and always needing to do something. And since the pandemic they haven’t been able to. I think a lot of people felt that way, so it was comforting to know I wasn’t the only one. It’s kind of like an okay, let’s calm down and do what we can, and let go of what we can’t.

In Suga's verse, when he talks about 400 "heart diseases" he's referring to mental illnesses, he's been studying psychology a lot because he wants to be able to help people that suffer from mental health problems similar to his struggles. BTS put their own thoughts and feelings into this album but it's also open for others to interpret the lyrics to relate them to their own lives. This song is mostly about each members dis-ease with actually having a rest when all they have done is constantly work for the past 7+ years with barely a break. Not having a full work schedule is new for them I think. haha

Main composer/songwriter j-hope did it! J-Hope deservedly receiving all the acclaim and credits due to his professionalism. For this level of composition he must have worked very hard to give his fans this kind of song.

I love "Telepathy". This is my fav of the album. Of course, "Life goes on" and "Fly to the room" are beautiful. "Blue & Gray" is very deep. THIS HITS YOUR HEAD LIKE A GLASS BOTTLE RM is using a Korean wordplay here. In the original version, in this line he uses the word “병” (byeong). In Korean it translates directly to “disease, sickness, illness” (from 病 in Hanja). However it can be also translated as “a bottle” (from 甁 in Hanja). Thanks to that this line could be read both as: “This hits your head like a glass bottle” and “This disease hits your head like glass” YO, IS IT THE WORLD OR ME THAT'S SICK? Released during the 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic, the world was essentially “sick”, with millions of people dying. The pandemic has also caused a social toll on humans, as many have gone through quarantine, with many spending these months alone to prevent spread. Because of this many people have suffered mentally, hence Suga asking if “it’s the world or me that’s sick”. This line and the ones before and after it also question how humanity has molded itself to revolve around this consumerism/labor-centric lifestyle. Suga notices that the world is becoming sicker and sicker (growth of consumerism), and he reflects on him and others and wonders if it’s him that is in the wrong, or the world. A lot of this song seems to be a critique of how much of ourselves and our life we sacrifice for our jobs. Thanks again for your reaction.

This is one of my favorites. It's such a bop, but the lyrics are so deep. I interpret it as being about that anxiety that comes with being too busy. You want to rest when you work, but when you rest you just think about all the things you need to do, an endless cycle of unease

The amount of attention you take to the comments is really appreciated as well as learning through critical thinking about ARMY and BTS. BTS' songs have their own meanings and their initial intentions on what they wanted to portray in the lyrics, but they know that each song can be interpreted differently to relate to the individual listener. The awesome part is that their "vibe" is really clear in my opinion. So, you can already feel a song even before understanding or interpreting the lyrics! Hi! You must be one of my favourite reactors on YT, so thank you for doing this :) Please don't mind people telling you how you should interpret the songs. I mean it's good to know what the artist meant while writing a song, because it's a way to get to know them better, but, by definition, art is subjective so there can be as many interpretations of one song as there are people who listen to it and every single interpretation is relevant, even if the context is only shared/known by one person. BTS' albums are like books. They don't have filler songs. Everything is part of a story. They present an intro, a challenge that they need to overcome and their journey to finally find a solution and the outro. It's really good to listen and understand their songs in an album in order for me because I understand what mesaage they are trying to send accross. May I suggest, if you want to enjoy the music first before reading the lyrics, you can go to their official channel there are official audio of their songs there. Then you can look at the lyric video if you want to. 💜

I'm a mom and this is the first time i have spent like 3 months at home(working from home) with my family. At first it was challenging cos we have never been so close and being together all the time. It was like we just got to know each other... Maybe it sounds weird but we all felt like that. Now, when some time has passed, we are actually having a time of our lives 🤣 We figure it out that we're all kinda crazy in our own way, we started to share more informations with each other, we got more involved with each other lives... So, i kinda like this, if you know what I mean. And this song, we all dance like crazy when we listen to it 🤣 We're just so different but so close like we've never been before. I think it's always hard to thread together the pieces because in each song even if they write to the same topic their narrative and approach towards that topic is very different.

I don't think anyone gets all the meaning the first time....part of the fun is figuring it out and in watching interviews etc we get a glimpse into what BTS was thinking and things we didn't figure out. As others have said JHope talked about this song being mostly about how he has realized he is a bit of a workaholic and does not really know how to not be working. Suga's song also is talking about Diseases of the heart and mind...the song has been growing on me and now is frequently stuck in my head. When the rapline writes their verses they often write about the original idea form their own perspective. Also when Jhope was talking about them not knowing how to not be working it reminded me of Jimin's interview in their recent show In The Soop where because they could not travel around the world to shoot a Bon Voyage show as they normally do they instead traveled to a spot in Korea where they were not given a schedule they were just asked beforehand what kind of things they wanted to do so that the supplies would be there and told to try to think of things they wanted to try but had never done....during this show Jimin said "What should I do today?" for the first time this question does not make him uncomfortable. For the first time it fells like a good thing to ask and does not bring pressure.

So the boys are talking about the uneasiness of having so much time on their hands, and not being used to it. So Hobi confronted his restlessness because he needs his day to be productive (a dog biting himself!), etc. What I love about this song is that EACH one got to share their angle on the lockdown experience, and yet they brought it together meaningfully as a collective reflection. My favourite song on the album... maybe because I identify so much with the struggle of making each day count in a chain of endless similar days... note Jimin’s cry, I will never fade away! As someone who lives for the stage, he had deep anxiety about the loss of their world tour and a whole year without a live audience...

One of my faves from the album. I agree with you that everyone has their own opinions. I think mines a little different possibly than most on this song? I don’t know but I feel like the boys are saying that they’re going to push on and carry on working through this time even with the dips in mood that you get during the pandemic. I've been waiting for this one!!! It's one of my favorites from the album, along with Blue and Grey. And I'm not even the biggest Hip-hop enthusiast... I'm just waiting for your reaction to the bridge 😆 Oh, RM's part has some interesting panning sounds! (Like, there are different sounds on the left and right earphones/speakers). The whole album does, actually, so if you feel like listening, it's incredible in stereo. Yeah, the contrast of the different parts and voices + the creative background sounds + the mixing&mastering are what absolutely _make_ this song for me. I wasn't totally on board for the first few verses either because I'm not too big on hip-hop, but once the chorus came in and then _that bridgeee....._ Ugh, so good, one of my faves. Ah, I think that when RM raps about his mind needing a vacation _just do your work at work_ he is saying the opposite, that even when he isn't at work he's thinking about work, hence why his mind needs a vacation and why he chides himself for it. It just seems more consistent with the rest of his verse and the song, right? Oh, you realized, nvm. There's this article that explains a bit what the song is about and I really liked it, as well as "I'm ill: a BTS essay" (I mentioned it on discord too, I'm pretty sure) (OMG I just checked and it's been deleted? 😔)

You guys could always listen to the official audio from the Bangtantv channel so it's just audio with no lyrics... then switch to a lyric video. That way BTS gets the legit view on their channel for streaming numbers and you're not distracted by the lyrics during the first listen. :)

I felt the same way. It went from being my least favorite on the album to the one i want to listen to the most.

I think the main theme of dis-ease are the global pandemics that have been plaguing us long before COVID-19 such as overworking one's self, and mental illnesses. Like these dis-eases or uneasiness we all feel as adults are rarely or hardly considered a diseases but they are things we actually need to treat because they are also detrimental to our well being.

I'm looking forward to the rest of the album and all the reactions to their older stuff. As far as music videos my recommendations would be Blood Sweat & Tears, Black Swan and Not Today. I noticed that you started your kpop journey with a BLACKPINK song and seemed to like it, would be nice if you could give their other songs a listen as well. I'd also understand if your a bit overwhelmed by all the BTS content at the moment, but BLACKPINK doesn't have a huge discography yet, so you could check it out in between. DDU-DU DDU-DU might blow you guys away, it's very different to Lovesick Girls. That's also the YT video with most views by any kpop group at 1.4B!

Sometimes when people say “ they mean this or that” is because they have told us. I like the different looks for the lyrics of the song and even mvs that you give, because there may be elements that nobody noticed before or perspectives not analyzed.
