Episode 1: Traveling and camping in South Africa / Visiting Maselspoort / Introduction

Welcome to episode 1 of my brand new RU-vid channel. My name is Jaco and I want to take you to different resorts / campsites in South Africa.
In this video I am visiting Maselspoort (Est. 1935), a popular resort near Bloemfontein in Central South Africa.
Please do not be alarmed by my channel name, Barenaked Camper. I just thought it sounds catchy and might intrigue people to have a look, but I promise you will not see my naked. Ever!
I want to include everybody who is interested in traveling and camping, therefore I will sometimes use my caravan, named Grace, and other times I will camp in my tent. I also have an adventure motorcycle which I will travel with, so whether you enjoy camping with your caravan or roughing it in a tent you are welcome here. Bikers are also included to join me on my adventures.
I decided to start this channel so that I can give you an overview of resorts / campsites, and that I can maybe help to get lesser known resorts / campsites on the map.
The first few videos may not be perfect because I am very new to editing, but please be patient with me, I promise it will get better.
I apologize that this first video is so long, but I had to introduce myself properly and make one or two disclaimers, but now that it is out of the way I can just focus on making interesting and informative videos in the future.
I hope you find my videos helpful and that you will consider subscribing and give me a thumbs up. Please share this video with other people who also love the outdoors and camping, and you are welcome to leave me any positive feedback in the comments.
Resort / camp site owners or managers are welcome to contact me if you would like me to visit your resort and make a similar video.
I will also include drone footage whenever I am allowed to fly my drone.

Thank you very much for this channel Jaco. I recently got into camping due to RU-vid videos such as yours and the family and i enjoyed it immensely. We camp at campsites its our tents and our sedan. It may be an obvious question since you drive a sedan, but do you think it is advisable / necessary for those who pursue this lifestyle to have a double cab bakkie or SUV for road clearance / towing grunt etc. ? I ask as we are considering getting a camping trailer. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Jaco. I really enjoyed this. I also do campsite reviews of the campsites I go to around Cape Town and also use a drone for some footage. Lately I have been inserting the drone footage in between the other clips and not leaving it to the end. I do not do nearly as much narration as you which is something I must work on to make my video's more interesting. As you say, it is hard to relax in front of the camera. With regard to birds attacking your drone. I have been flying drones for about 9 years now and have often observed this. The birds see your drone as a threat in their terrritory and in their world the best form of defence is to attack. If their are birds around, I generally keep the drone low and bring it back as soon as they show any interest. If I see any birds of prey soaring around in hunting mode, I don't take off. I had a good chuckle at "Rather Jan with a drone than Jan with no drone".

Not a bad first attempt at vlogging, yes its true very few south Africa's do this, well done for taking initiative... Few tips the blackout after scenes is not ideal, I kept refreshing thinking I lost connection. For your safety... blur out your vehicle and caravan registration, crime and fraud is still bad in S.A. other than that it's a pleasant view... All the best for future episodes

A Jurgens Fleetline is a nice caravan. I have the Jurgens Exclusive double axle. With flushing toilet and shower. Plus a bunch of custom fittings for permanent offgrid living. Towing with a customer built 8 ton truck with exclusive fittings.

Hullo Jaco. As a retired English teacher, I must say, the best English I have heard from Afrikaans speakers has come out of Bloemfontein! It makes me think that I should have applied for a post there instead of a very ungrateful stuck up itself school in Bellville. AS a young child we used to go to Mazelspoort every winter holiday, my parents also being teachers. I loved it. Back in those days, it was a little country road taking you out there, and you came around a koppie and in front of you was a tunnel of trees! It was all so unspoilt and humble. Halfway down the tunnel, was a little hokkie where the nagwag kept a lookout for you, because it would be after hours when we would arrive. I can still see the guy running to show us the way, frantically waving the key! There were a few rondawels, and some bigger kamphuise. We were shown to our abode for the next two weeks. My brother and I would be so excited, sleep was NOT an option! Sharing a room, we would skate up and down in the moonlight on the polished tiles, and tell each other stories and jokes and giggle like mad. Every now and then a stentorian "SHUTTUP OR ELSE!!" came from the parents side. Eventually....boem boem boem...door opens, and wack wack wack on our backsides with the cane from the picnic basket. Which would subdue us for a short while, before we got up to compare marks by torchlight. But sooooo much fun!! Rowing on the river, walking along the riverside, climbing up the koppie.....the list goes on.

Hi Michael. Thank you for the comment. I do not like to include the tariffs in my videos because some camp sites increase their tariffs more than once a year, and then the tariffs I mention in my videos will be outdated shortly after I posted the video. I feel that if someone watching my videos is interested in visiting a specific camp site, they should rather contact the camp site and get up to date tariffs. I hope it makes sense. Regards. Jaco

I think you should be fine, but "wild camping" isn't allowed in SA. Rather, stay at camp sites, then you will be safe.

Hi. I prefer not to give the prices, because the camp site can increase their prices at any time, and then the information in my videos will be out of date. I would rather suggest that my viewers contact the camp site directly for up to date prices. Thank you for watching.
