Ms. Hahn is my favorite living violinist. I haven't yet had a chance to hear Mr. Abels' piece. But the conversation brought to mind the last movement of Prokofiev's f minor sonata, with a lengthy passage of runs through the strangest harmonic progressions. I have a live recording of David Oistrakh performing it. It's one of my favorite recordings. But the thought of memorizing it is mind boggling.

It always amazes me that so many musicians, especially soloists, can memorize long and complicated pieces. I've been playing the same pieces from Suzuki book one for months and still have to look at the music...😑

Would it be important to, before memorizing a piece, study and understand the emotional component and general background of the composition? Coert Mommsen, Potchefstroom, South Africa

i believe that is always important before playing a piece anyways. to really play a piece well it is a good idea to understand the backstory of it. for example, it would be a bit odd to hear someone play shostakovich without any knowledge of the time period or his experiences/why he wrote the piece, don't you think? anyways, if you're going as far to memorize it you should especially know the background.

Hilary - Reference the Tweet about bouncing the bow off of the strings like a trampoline. Is there a musical mark in the music to "trampoline the bow"? If not, just like the up bow and down bow marks now in use one should be setup in your name :"The Hilary Hahn trampoline mark "HH", for use on a sequence of notes or individually. I have never seen other violinists bounce their bow.
