Thanks Fathers, this was really helpful. I've been discerning a vocation for some time and I've been in that spot of almost paralysis for some time now. Somewhere between afraid to move forward because I'm afraid of both success and failure, but also somewhat sure of which direction God wants me to go. It's nice to hear that there's really no wrong choice when choosing between two means to God.

I am retired so have more time.....but saying the rosary every day, reading the bible, fasting, Mass and confession once a week helps me. Morning and evening prayer and reading the saints lives too. I find if I do these things I don't have time for much else. However, the Holy Mother and Jesus have made it and absolute joy to say the rosary,

Our family photo album contained a small lock of my hair and those of my two sisters as well. I always felt special to see it there. My Mom didn't save any teeth but I could understand that, it's a reminder of how tiny our children once were. It's all about love.

I am willful. God knows me well. I'm old now and in retrospect, I can see that, in every scenario, God laid his will/ goal for me. Then sat back. Watching to see, "Will she (listen and) take the short way to my will? Or will she do her thing and take the long way to my will? " But somehow I think, there was never a possibility on the grand scale that I was ever outside of His love and protection. I take comfort in that. Comfort I rarely to never felt in my youth/ before my conversion.

I always feel like I was supposed to be with a boyfriend from university. But it took me years and my husband being a complete opposite of the bf and finally leaving me - to realize this. And I wonder why God let me meet that good boyfriend back then when I was too immature to appreciate him. I'm kinda too old at this point to benefit from the lesson, I can only pass it to my children I guess. But a lesson like that has to be experienced so I still don't know.

[ ▼ BOOKS AND QUOTES ▼ ] I. Books 10:40 - Twitch Upon A Thread; Book 2 of Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh - The Queer Feet; The Innocence of Father Brown by G.K. Chesterton - Bonconte I da Montefeltro; Canto 5:88-108; Purgatorio (Book 2 of The Divine Comedy) by Dante Alighieri 27:13 - Searching for and maintaining peace by Jacques Philippe - Interior Freedom by Jacques Philippe 30:02 - The Religious Sense by Luigi Giussani II. Quotes 26:03 I think just this simple fact that God loves your destiny more than you do is a really helpful one for discernment or decision making in a more humble and modest sense. 26:13 Sometimes we feel like, again like you said, we need to wrestle this gnostic knowledge from God's mind or like we need to somehow convince God that it's in His best interest to give us insight into our own futures... When truth be told, God is making Himself known (and) God is making Himself loved in the way that is best suited to our growth and salvation and to His glory. So we have to be able to believe that, and to trust that, and ultimately to love that reality. And when we start loving that reality, that's when we have the confidence to say... "All right, I'm going to play the hand that I'm dealt because this is the only hand that I have to play. So my real life is here and whether or not it seems better or worse by comparison to the person on my left or on my right is a kind of uninteresting claim... What is interesting is that God loves me and that God wants me to know Him and to love Him and He is supplying me with everything sufficient to that end, so I need only consent." 27:13 When you were talking about kind of keeping panic at bay, I was thinking of Jacques Philippe's book Searching For and Maintaining Peace. In this particular setting, I think of Jacques Philippe's book Interior Freedom that point about consent. This idea that real life is not elsewhere. Real life is here and by recognizing that fact, by loving that fact, I'm able to embrace the will of God in all of its small particular details. And to do so with a kind of spirit of abandonment... to do so with a spirit of genuine freedom, so that I'm not haunted by the fact of "it could have been otherwise" or "it could have been better" or "I could...(fill in the appropriate blank)" It's just a matter of simply saying that God is here and He makes Himself present to me. By responding generously to His grace, I may be present to Him and He'll do with it what He will. I think ultimately that gives you the kind of certainty that the will of God may look this way or that way but ultimately it will be good... provided that it's His.

1:25 - I REALLY respect that honesty 👏 I paid a huge price with no end in sight. I'd rather jog down the whole street than tie my shoes from not jumping off the boat to Tarsus. My spine is wrecked. I shouldn't be employed, I should be weak and about to die from heat exhaustion homeless. My parents wanted me to be a pastor. That's like Chris Farely or Sam Kinison playing John the Baptist in a movie, I was that worthless 🤦‍♂️

_The odds are even higher still..._ "The person who loves renounces, in ever greater measure, every autonomous determination or ordering of his own deeds and omissions, his own thoughts and feelings, so that everything he has may be left more freely and more completely at the disposal of the beloved. Because he thus equates the one law of love more and more closely with the law of his own being, he becomes increasingly free of the external compulsion of law. Paradoxically, however, he is at the same time raised to a new and more binding obedience, since every act of love commits him more deeply to love. For this reason, the disobedience of one who loves to even the least wishes of love is much more serious than that of one who is far from love, who hardly suspects the existence of love or of the laws of love. Both the internal and external actions of one who loves are weighed in a different balance; such a one calls in vain upon the larger distinctions that are valid for others. A wish that God whispers in his ear because there is a possibility that it may be heard, but which he rejects, can wound God’s eternal love more deeply than the transgression of a major commandment by one who is as yet unaware of the rules that govern the etiquette of love." Balthasar, The Christian State of Life

Always test your earnestness and sincerity against the Lord's example, rooting out all the insincerity in you and purifying whatever in you resists complete surrender to God and his grace. Ensure that you have purged your life of sin and that your core desire is holy: for God's will to be done. Ready your heart in prayer and humility to receive from God what he wills, not what you think; and never fail to put into practice what you hear, if you hear. Let your conscience be informed by his Word, and do not disobey it. "A holy will is not vouchsafed to all those who want it," says St Catherine of Siena. Unless our "perverse self-will" is killed, really killed, how can we be a servant of God? Our sure foundation is a holy desire; in attaining it one cannot bypass death to the world and a shunning of impressions and appearances. Yes, you can mess up God's will for you. It is misleading, unwise, complacent to say or suggest otherwise. You can ignore calls and miss exit ramps, you can contaminate paths with every sort of libidinal trash. Insincerity can mask itself behind all sorts of 'devout' displays. Self-deception loves to dress up as a passion for God. Endless excuses prevent the existential commitment from becoming total. Ensure you are not self-deceived in your desire: be deadly earnest, uncompromisingly sincere. Why express it in terms any less vigorous than St Paul, who advised us to work out our salvation in fear and trembling? Why save ourselves from the dread of not hearing God's call, of letting pass our encounter with the Absolute? Why save ourselves from the shame and guilt of having let our own sinfulness rob God of a good worker? We ought to feel crushed by all those instances when we favored self-will over love, when we chose to heed common sense or our own interests over the ways of the Lord. Every choice has an impact on our eternity - has a transcendental significance that no human speech can defray. It accumulates, every last bit. Few are they who find the narrow gate that leads to life. Don't be deceived: Jesus is not exaggerating. (Not a comment on the video, just my witness on this issue. Do not take life lightly or waste a single moment with anything less than the truth. If it is less, cast it far behind you, and do not look back.)

@@thisgirl5933 In my experience, being completely honest with ourselves about every aspect of us and in us which is still resistant to the total surrender - this the right step, the right reflective/repentant work which can bring us closer to trusting in God's grace and mercy, to accomplish the surrender. Don't be discouraged. It takes courage to hide no longer - to enact fully our own coming into the light. To be aware of our own insincerity, how we put on masks, how we cater to human perceptions, even how we deceive ourselves in our inner life - all these are the crucial humiliations which lead us to that state of humility that allows God to work in us. "Despise yourself for God's sake, and without your being aware of it your glory will become great." St Isaac of Nineveh God bless and thank you for the care you take.
