In this week's episode, I’m talking about a topic that I absolutely love...Thrifting!! This was not always the case...I know this may be shocking to some but it's a true statement. I went from being completely embarrassed as a young child to loving it as an adult! I thrifted, repurposed & reused items even before it was the cool thing to do!
Join me weekly as I tell my story and start interviewing other creators to hear theirs as well. I hope to give you a well-rounded space for inspiration, encouragement to create, tips on trying new techniques, give you advice, and overall real talk about owning your own business. Wise words and thoughts Sonnet. This generation needs to listen and learn from what you’ve said. I feel exactly the same as you about how this generation of young people think they must start out with what it’s taken their parents many years to obtain.

I think repurposing creates attachment because we literally connect with the item as we touch, mold and sometimes get injured through the process. It's a beautiful thing!!

This took me back! My mother volunteered at the church thrift shop. There wasn’t Goodwill then, just yard sales, and she brought home many great things when she volunteered. She loved a bargain! My first experience of transforming something was when I redecorated my teenage bedroom. I painted it blue myself, even though I had never seen a homeowner, let alone a teenage girl, paint. It turned out well and my mother let me pick out a purple and blue bedspread and curtain set. My first thrift purchase was an ottoman fan, which I spray painted violet. I was so proud! My husband and I started with nothing, too, and I thrifted and mcgyvered and Upcycled of necessity. I used to take my kids thrifting, and my daughter caught the bug! She also scrounges roadside. In fact two chairs that are currently in one of our booths she picked up at the side of the road!

When I was young Mom taught us girls to sew. The flour came in printed cotton sacks. It was so exciting to go to grocery store and see what new prints they had and Mom would buy that flour. Those were 50 lb bags. ( Mom also made 7 loaves of homemade bread on bread making day) . My sister and I got to make our own tops out of those flour sacks! It was such a good learning experience and we loved it!

You definitely have the eye for thrifting like no other. I love that you talk about your parents and the values they instilled in you. It's the same for me and I, too, wouldn't want it any other way! As far as having the eye for thrifting, I missed the boat on that one. I've been following you for a long time and I love your thrift haul videos. But I still find myself asking, "What in the world is she gonna do with that?!" And then you very quickly show us exactly what you envisioned in a follow-up video! Your talent continues to blow me away! 🙂❤🇨🇦

A lot of food for thought! I agree that things made today do not last. Our oven broke and when the service tech came out the first thing he asked was did we buy the warranty. Our oven was 2 years old. He said one should always buy the extended warranty because things today are not made to last. Very sad! Great podcast!

We are the really lucky ones aren’t we!?!? Our stories are so similar! My gosh girl we have sooooo much in common!! The garden thing…can’t resist old garden things!! My Mom was a picker back in the 60’s and 70’s…so I always “had” to come along…so embarrassing!!! She would even pick at the town dump (that’s probably illegal now😳). I have this vivid memory…it had to be the late ‘60s. We were at the dump and she found a beautiful “seal skin” coat. Poor seal😳😳😳. It must have been in pretty good shape as she had it long time. But she was frugal…and taught my sister and I how to have “champagne taste on a beer budget.” So thankful for that today! Young people nowadays (omg I’m old😳) really need to figure this out! Love your stories and Pod cast…so nice to listen to while I’m painting😁❤️

What a wonderful and heartfelt podcast! Thank you for sharing your heart with us. I loved the tribute you gave to your Mom and Dad. Obviously they did a great job in raising you. I give a lot of credit to them for choosing to take on the challenge of raising a baby while still in their teens. I agree that being brought up to be frugal and not just expecting to go out and buy anything you want gives kids a better foundation. Thanks for opening yourself up and letting us see the real you. The more I get to know about you the more I like you.

I was the same way as a kid, my mom took my twin sister and I to the salvation army and I was embarrassed as well. But grew to love going, because we got to pick out clothes. I still love to go today, but I have to be careful because I have way to much stuff.
