On feeling alive...I was recently at a museum admiring gowns and garments in a fashion exhibit. I had wistfully stated that I'd like to be a textile designer in another life, and the friend I was with said, "you already are," referring to my knitting. I was a little stunned at my own surprise and how affirming it felt. I try to remind myself that I am living a creative and artful life when I get bogged down in the stuff that feels less free.

Stephanie, your projects are so lovely! I especially like the sweater for your daughter, my granddaughters (all 6 of them) would absolutely love those colors! (I also have 2 grandsons) Question #1 About 6 months after my husband and I had been dating (we lived in the Chicago area at the time), we decided to drive through MN to a spot in Canada and camp at a Provincial park near a resort that my family spent summers as a kid. We took a week’s vacation, planning to spend about 3 days in Canada. On our last day, after we returned the canoe we had rented, our car died. It was towed to the boat rental place (we were in the middle of nowhere). It took a week for the car part to get from the Canadian border to the boat rental, where they installed the part. It was the most magical week; we were basically trapped in the middle of nowhere, sleeping in a tent, but we were able to spend our days hiking and our evenings around a campfire. There were only a handful of campers during the week, so we pretty much had the place to ourselves. The company we worked for thought that we had run off to elope😉 When my future husband proposed to me a few months later, I was told by his brother, that the camping trip was a test of sorts. My husband loves spending time outdoors almost as much as I do. Needless to say, I passed with flying colors. We married the following summer. We’ve been married for 36 years. In answer to your second question, I absolutely love spending time with our 5 daughters, 3 of which have families of their own. My “happy place” is spending time in Northern Minnesota hiking through the state parks or collecting rocks (and sometimes agates) on the beaches of Lake Superior. Thank you again for your inspiring podcast!

Wow! The color of the Plein Air are VERY different on the Purl Soho website. You're right, Rolled Oat looks like a cream color where yours looks more grey.

As to your second question, swimming at the ocean (I used to live in the Caribbean) makes me feel alive. So does gardening. Both places, the beach or water and the earth, having my hands in the soil, make me feel very keenly how great it is to be alive and part of a bigger whole. The water makes me feel at peace, and the garden makes me happy and filled with a kind of joy.

The eyes of a child when they accomplish something they’ve worked on. I teach sewing to 9/10 year olds at our local library and just again tonight, in some fabric I no longer wanted, she made a tee shirt, and worked it home, unhemmed. Her face is priceless, and I feel on top of the world, having taught another kid the magic of making, in any form. So I suppose I feel most alive when I’m passing along knowledge gained over 50 years (I started very young) of making, you can’t teach the thrill that happens, tho, you can only uncover it. Thx.

Necklines can be tricky little devils. That is why I always cast on with a smaller needle size, and work my way up. So if the recommended needle size is US6 (4mm), I will cast on with a US4, work the ribbing 2 rounds, switch to US5 (3.75mm) and work another two rounds of ribbing, then use the US6 (4mm) to complete neckline ribbing. The earrings are fabulous.

I am working on my first all over cable sweater. I am on the 2nd sleeve and at this point, it basically feels just like stockinette. I don't need my chart and I barely have to think about what I'm doing. People talk about sleeve island but this doesn't feel that way at all to me. It's funny how quickly our minds can adapt to whatever pattern we are doing after so many repeats. There is something so rhythmic and soothing about it.

Thank you so much for giving us a close up of your earrings. They caught my eye as soon as the podcast started and I was wishing I could see them better. Your sweater is beautiful and perfect for Valentine's Day. It has a soft romantic feel with the pink and lace neckline. The reusable bread bags are a great idea. My daughter bakes bread almost daily and I'm going to make a few for her birthday. As to your second question, hiking makes me feel alive. I live in the Laurel Highlands in PA and watching the change of the seasons as I hike with our dogs makes me feel free and complete.

I just finished book 3 and oh, so heartwrenching and simultaneously the humor is so delightful and all of it...just so good!! Then I checked out River of Silver (collection of cut chapters and short stories before, during, and after the series) and loved that too - more insight into the individuals and what happened after the third book.

I love how organized you are and how much information you are always sharing with us. Can you share with us what you use to podcast? Do you use a regular camera, an IPad or phone? The quality of the video and the sound is excellent. My love share is about my best friend. Thank you so much Wendy!! I was using a 10+ year old Sony camcorder for the longest time but it doesn't function anymore. I am currently using borrowed equipment and don't really have specifics on hand to share (I can tell you that is isn't an ipad or an iphone!). I use Adobe Premiere Elements 2020 to do all of my video editing. I have some very close friends who I don't see often enough but when we do see each other, it's like we just pick up where we left off!! The feeling is so so good❤️ Take care!

The Tin Can Knits pullover for your daughter is gorgeous! I love the colours and the patterns. I have that book and must take a look at it again. So love stories, I think like many of us who have been watching some of the very young reporters from G.a.z.a , I am quite in love with them. They are young, and brave and have lost everything including their families but they are determined to bring a different kind of news to the world. There is heartbreak too as most of them have been killed, and the ones left probably won't survive. It is almost like the trilogy you were talking about, except it is real life. My heart is with them. Your brother's sour dough looks amazing! Lucky you!

Thank you so much! I'm so excited that your granddaughter is also an avid reader. I likely won't be talking about the books my 5th grader is reading only because she goes through a lot of books and I don't read them all with her so I wouldn't be able to say anything about them or give a review .... plus then I would have to do the research to find out what she's reading so that I have a title and author to share, take a photo of the cover (because that's how I share books on here for a visual), read up info on the book to give a synopsis, etc. That being said, if you're looking for book ideas and have access to a library, ask a librarian for suggestions!! Librarians can be great resources. Thanks for stopping by!❤️

I will mention off the top of my head one duology she and I have both read (and that she recently re-read) that we really enjoyed (I think I talked about it in a RU-vid video in the past but not sure which episode....) is Eva Evergreen, Semi-Magical Witch (book 1), and Eva Evergreen and the Cursed Witch (book 2) by Julie Abe! Middle grade fantasy.

You look so cute with dangly earrings on. Zauberball yarns are so fun. I need to look for mine in my stash. I've had to for many years. So cute to imagine your girls sitting and reading with their Mommy-made shawls all wrapped around them in love. I love how your daughters appreciate and love your knitting. Smart way to use up scrap fabric for bread bags and so awesome how your brother shares his creations with you. I love that striped fabric bag you made for yourself and those book cozies are clever and handy. Yeah, backpacks are like shake and bake for younger kids, LOL. OMGosh, your 2nd grader's colorwork sweater is amazing! The colors! I will have to check out their Strange Brew book. Tin Can Knits have user friendly patterns. I always recommend Flax to new knitters who want to try garment knitting.

I love your energy and excitement as you share your knitting, book choices, and baking. Thanks. After watching your talk about your sock knitting I have become interested in learning about sock knitting on 9 inch circular needles. I have two questions for you. Firstly which brand and type of needles do you use for socks And secondly I see you are an English style knitter. How do you tension your yarns when knitting colorwork socks? Do you use one or two hands? Your colorwork is outstanding. Thanks for sharing.
@EdibleThoughtsMakes
@EdibleThoughtsMakes 5 месяцев назад
Thank you so much! My favorites are fixed Chiaogoo 9" circulars (though I haven't tried anything else!) for their flexible but sturdy cord, smooth joins between the needle and cord, and sharp needle tips. I will say that I've heard those who knit continental have a trickier time adjusting to 9" circulars (but it's still doable!!). Also, people have mentioned sometimes they have a hard time holding onto the needles if they typically anchor their pinky on a needle (since the needle is so short, the pinky doesn't have anything to anchor to). And one more thing is that you might need to adjust your tension holding onto the needles - loosen up or your hands might cramp! Hope that helps. I knit colorwork two-handed and hold the contrast color in my left hand to knit it continental while the main color is in my right hand to be knit English-style.
@EdibleThoughtsMakes
@EdibleThoughtsMakes 5 месяцев назад
One more thing is that for colorwork socks specifically, I go up a needle size for the colorwork section because there's less stretch and I need to make sure it will stretch over my heel. I regularly knit my socks with more negative ease for a more snug fit but there's less give for an all over colorwork sock. Just something to keep in mind!
@Bob-nn2vy
@Bob-nn2vy 5 месяцев назад
How kind of you to write such detailed replies to my queries. I use Chiagoo needles for most of my knitting but knit socks concurrently on two sets of very old Addi circs. I’ve only made one pair of all over colorwork socks from the book Op-Art Socks. The pattern was great fun to knit. I’m a loose knitter and because my gauge matched the pattern and the floats seemed loose enough I thought I was fine. It was only after I finished the pair I realized I had trouble getting them over my heel. Thanks to your tip I now know the reason for going up a needle size. @@EdibleThoughtsMakes

Just curious - do you carry the yarns on a striped shirt like your Tolsta T, or do you cut and weave in? Looks great.
@EdibleThoughtsMakes
@EdibleThoughtsMakes 5 месяцев назад
Oh! I meant to talk about that and totally forgot to. I carried the main color on the first section and decided I didn't like how that tensioned the yarn so for the rest I cut. I did cut the contrast yarns after each stripe. Thank you!

I'm not a huge crocheter, but I have started the granny shawl you've frequently made and mentioned :) I was wondering if you could answer a question, if you don't mind. How do you introduce color changes? Do you just drop one yarn and start the next, or do you do a bit of finishing before the next color change so that your yarns don't blend?
@EdibleThoughtsMakes
@EdibleThoughtsMakes 5 месяцев назад
I don't adjust anything, just go until the yarn runs out and magic knot the ends of the previous yarn tail with the new yarn!
