I have noticed (with a bit of a thrill) that the most viewed of my little teaching videos so far has been "How Not to Sing in Your Throat." Don't we all do it, especially when we're tired? Well, while working with a student recently, I realized that another component that can help a student sing with better placement is to sing up and out the forehead AND THEN yawn. Some teachers call this yawning action "lifting the palette." I just say Yawn. It does the same thing. The important thing is to sing out your forehead first and yawn second. Thank you! Just in the beginning of learning all the basics and this was really helpful! Specifically the yawning piece and the only place to tighten as the diaphragm area.

This is a great little video. This really makes a lot of sense to me! The visual of singing forward and then backing down from there to the yawn motion is a great way to think about it. Thank you!

The first video I made on this subject was Episode 4: How Not to Sing in Your Throat. This is Episode 14, my 2nd video on the subject. If you have the time, scan through my videos. There are lots of exercises there. Working the exercises will help you focus on your vocal technique which will take the energy away from your throat. Thank you for the comment. I've been singing almost every day for a full year, and after a while my throat still hurts. I've tried all these breathing exercises, and I realized my air lasts more, my range has amplified, but my throat still hurts 💔 Do you have any more tips on what I may be doing wrong? Thanks!

So sorry I’ve taken so long to respond. My guess, and it’s just a guess, is that you’re working too hard. Take some time off. Give your body a rest. Muscles remember your practice so give yourself a break.
