Episode 14: My best, most worn, and worst knit of 2023, and I am back on the beach in Cornwall 

Thank you for taking us with you on your walk with Bailey. The beach looked stunning. I've taken my time in 2023 to make a king size 6 row crochet granny square blanket using all my advent minis. I have a consistent colour as my middle and fifth row and changing colours for each other row. Its brought me great joy, even sewing in all those ends!! I'm now joining them using a 'new to me' technique, amd it has been great to have the blanket over me in this very chilly weather. Win, win for me! Although I've been a knitter all my life, I've never done a top down garment as the thought of short rows gives me the heebie jeebies!! I'm full of admiration of your newbie customer who wants to give it a go. Love your channel Jane. Take care 😊

The last three times I've been to Cornwall I've stayed at Trewan Hall, St Columb Major. Mawgan Porth is the beach where we took our dogs and it is so wonderful to see your video of it. A lovely reminder of this beautiful place and happy times spent with friends. Your experience with the hated sideways cable sweater reminds me of trying to get though a book I am not enjoying! Usually I just decide that life is too short and don't persevere. I am caught up with your videos from 2023 and this first one from 2024... I am already looking forward to the next one. I'd really like to see an online tutorial for a top down sweater as I would like to knit the Field Sweater that you showed a while ago. I haven't knitted in the round yet but hope to try that on a much smaller scale fairly soon. Many thanks for all the hard work you put in making your videos.

Love your podcast and kids porti. I wonder if you would consider teaching your beginners the cable cast on. It's so much easier than the long tail? And really is just a knit stitch. I use it for my beginners. I have just finished the Burra cowl and the Geogrdient shawl. Favourite knit of 2023 the Maudie cardigan by Truly Myrtle modified to be a v neck. In perendale fushia colour. what a lovely coastline.

Thank you for organising it. 😃 My favourite knit from 2023 was a pair of mittens I made as a gift for my daughter. I incorporated a secret message in each one using the knitting Morse Code that knitters used in wartime to secretly send information about enemy activities. She is a huge history aficionado and absolutely loved them! It was a massive challenge figuring it all out, and my first time knitting mittens. Oodles of fun! Happy knitting! 😃🧶

Hi Jane, I love Cornwall and need to come back for another holiday! It makes me so homesick watching your video but at the same time understand why it’s so many peoples happy place. This year I’m going to try and be more intentional with my knitting and slow down and not try and knit everything! Slow craft is my thing 😊 I want to use the yarn in my stash and not get taken in by so many knits on social media. Saying that there are so many beautiful patterns and yarn it’s very tempting. Nice listening to you chat while I knit the garden cardigan in preparation for our winter ❤

Thanks so much Jane for another super podcast! I would say yes to tassels always! My favourite knit of last year has to be the Tuku sweater, my first pattern from the Petite Knitter. The pattern was really easy to follow, and a joy to knit, I love it so much because the colourwork is beautiful, and the fit is great. I knitted it in yarn from John Arbon Yarnaddelic, and think it suits it very well. I would love to follow a tutorial on brioche. Something that scares me a little, but I am confident you could guide us through, with your knowledge and patience! i think the tassels would be pretty. I did the pressed flowers sweater and I know what you mean; i made it into a vest because I just could not do one more flower! LOL Thank you for showing us the scenery - so beautiful and your dog is so precious. I have two springers and they would not behaved as well as Bailey! LOL

I think the socks that I've knit and given away for Christmas were my favourites. At the moment a shawl that I think I have knit on too small needle size is not the one I want to work on but I'm carrying on as I'm past the point of no return so to speak!. Love seeing the beach, must be a great time to live in the area when all the tourists have gone home. It's the same here in San Diego and back home in West Sussex, to be able to park the car and go to a cafe easily within sight of the beach makes it a pleasure. Thanks for the episode. Jane.

Thank you for the podcast. I have made a lot of socks which are always fun. I made a Gan slipover which I have worn a lot, with trousers/jeans or over a dress. I have just cast another one on. A tutorial for German Short Rows would be useful as I really struggle to understand the process and I feel I have been lucky when they have worked for me!

Hello again Jane, another great episode and inspiring as always. I followed your pattern advice from earlier last year and tried knitting in the round for the first time. I made the Sea Haven Sweater by JST Designs. I used 4ply from stash held double and it came out beautifully and fits well. I had no problems following the instructions and have just started another one. I highly recommend this pattern. Secondly I made the Sille Slipover by Petite Knit. This was a bit more complicated form of construction, but again made in the round and the finished garment is brilliant. I Iove that there are no seams to sew up and the finish is so much more pleasing . So thank you for recommending these patterns. Previously I have mainly crocheted blankets, but now am making socks and garments all on circular needles. Life changing. So this year's learning challenge is colourwork and the new cowl pattern and the child's cardigan look to be the place to start. Watch this space and keep up your excellent podcasts. ❤

Hi Jane, great video, lovely to see your makes. My most worn and enjoyable knit was the kristylopi cardigan from Helene magnusson. It was my first steek and she had a lovely video to explain it. It’s so warm and really light I love it. You’re retreats look wonderful and if I didn’t have bookings already I would have come in April. Hopefully in the future. I’m also hoping to do a kal with you. Lessons wise it would be nice to have some tips on mastering continental for 70 year olds 😂. Much love Maggie for the Wirral xx

I have made a general list thus year. Nothing set in stone (I had a lovely knitting journal fir Christmas). So far from my list (I don't have a kitten or children to wrangle), 3 pairs of scrappy socks with leftovers from my 2023 blanket project, I am about 1/2 way through my second (I made the other one ages ago) Ilha jumper and when I feel like it, reknitting my grandson's fingerless gloves as they came out too big for him. I have a couple of other things on the list including the Harmonia Cowl, I love the way it sits. Plus a couple of slip overs/tank tops, one for my husband that I designed, but seems to be missing, knitted in Alpaca UK yarn (really well priced!) Loved your Renunculus most of all I think...that colour!❤

Happy New Year Jane love the child’s cardigan but sadly no grandkids to knit for. I am on my fourth mitred square blanket changed the design on this one. I am going to start on socks soon as it’s something I always wanted to knit. Thanks for the visit to the beach it was lovely.

Yes to tassels, you can always take them off again if you don’t like. My most worn item this winter has been the Hilly Hood I’ve even had offers to buy!! Not even tempted 🤣. I’m about to knit another. I’ve really enjoyed the KALs and wear everything I’ve knitted. Love my Ilha and Weekender and would do both again. I'm knitting a daft days cardigan by Rebecca Clow and recently test knit the Squish cardigan by Andrea Rangel. It's all over cables which I loved and have gotten lots of compliments on. I had started a shawl while on holiday last summer in Italy, but decided that I would never finish it and so frogged it recently. I hope to come to you shop in Cornwall someday!

I loved your approach to the 2023 recap. I’ve watched them all 🤣 and they can be a bit intimidating- I can’t knit that fast! I didn’t knit anything I can grab and wear - all too complicated- so that’s my intention for 2024 as well as sweaters that fit under coats! Turns out my most rewarding knits were 3 Unicorns, a rabbit and a piglet for 3 granddaughters. BTW: yes, TASSELS!

Hello and Happy new Year dear Jane - thank you for such a great episode; I noticed the Porthallow Hat on Instagram the other day and snapped it up to make for our coming Winter. To answer some of your questions - my favourite knits from last year would have to be 2 I did for my beautiful little granddaughters - one is the “Pippa” cardigan by Sarah Hatton which I made for our precious girl who was born on your birthday Jane and the second is a locally produced pattern I call the “Sheepy cardy “ by Ronnie Avery which has a colourwork farmyard scene for our 2 and a 1/2 year old granddaughter. My most worn hand knit would still have to be the “Beryl” moss stitch cardigan from the Wensleydale Longwool Sheepshop which is getting close to 10 years old as I bought the yarn on our trip to the UK in 2014!! At the moment I’m just doing the collar on an epic (as in Longtime) cardigan featuring cables etc and making Miss 1year old in July a Farmyard Playset - very exciting!! And thanks for the lovely trip to the beach 🏖️

Lovely to listen to your knitting chatter after Xmas. Nice to see what you've been knitting & reassuring to see that sometimes patterns are not quite for us. My favourite knit has been my Felix cardigan in Jamieson's heathered Aran. Haven't blocked it yet but really enjoyed knitting it. I'm onto my 2nd for my daughter. Will definitely have this pattern in a couple of colour ways. Didn't really have a least favourite but will say my Milet mittens by Ysolda Teague haven't come up the size I expected but that may be my yarn choice BUT love her Mussleburgh hat it's a genius pattern. Loads on my needles at the moment. Always a pair of socks or shawl or both. A cardigan, a hat & a pair of mitts. Lots & lots of lovely patterns I'm wanting to knit & lots of yarns I'm itching to try. My most worn cardigan is Hazel Tindall’s Hamnafield knit in Armscote Manor’s 4 natural undyed shade(black, white, and 2 greys). Plump DK for Canadian winters, I have this on day and night, and under my winter coat.

Thank you for another wonderful episode! Poor William's lot was not entirely surprising, considering what you said last time :) My favourite knit of 2023 was a Musselburgh hat. I've hardly taken it off since I finished it. Partly because the wool (a tweed dyed by Nervus Fibre out of Glasgow) is so gorgeous and partly because the fit is so great. As a contrast to that most basic of silhouettes I'm now knitting a Henry VIII beret by Alice Starmore, although I have another Musselburgh on the needles for when someone wants to talk to me :) My least favourite knit is a hat that really turned out a bit too big, although the recipient insists he's happy with it.

My most worn knit of 2023 is the Great Love Cardigan. The yarn I used was from deep stash, Juniper Moon Sabine that I bought on clearance and just waited to use it for the right project. It is 40 % cotton, 30% llama and 30% merino wool. It is the perfect weight for where I live in south Texas in the US.

The cowls are lovely and the child's cardi❤ All the best with what you have planned for the year. I made a knitted dress last year, from Isagar Tweed yarn it was fun to make in a blue fade. Right now i am making a second Ilha, from locally dyed sock tsrn held with Kidsilk Haze in a lilac colour. Loving that one!

Course or tutorial idea: I have on several occasions changed a jumper pattern into a cardigan, and the reverse. It is surprisingly easy to do and it widens the choice of patterns one can use. Perhaps others would like to learn too. ❤ Your instruction videos are always marvellous. 😘

My two favourite makes last year were the Peacock Tee by Lene Holme Samsoe and a Love Notes sweater, knitted in bright pink Wool/silk/mohair - a very bold colour for me but I love it! I really like your Nordstrand sweater - which yarn from your shop would you recommend to knit it?

So inspiring to see Your go’s and no go’s😇 my most used knit is Rømø by Hanne Rimmen. Similar to the Filcolana sweater you’re wearing. Knit in Plotulopi and Einband from istex. At the moment I am in a baby bubble, preparing for our 4th Grandson. Knitting Venø blanket from Kit Couture and Babybubble cardigan from Camijo knit. Check her out, she’s a brilliant Yarn dyer too🤗

My least favourite knit is my Twist Loop Sweater by Other Loops; it’s quite a heavy garment and I feel it doesn’t fit me very well, so I hardly ever wear it. Maybe an idea for an online class(es) could be stranded colourwork/ fair isle (not sure if they’re the same thing)? I got some Raw Wool DK from your shop in the autumn (which looks and feels gorgeous) that I’m going to pair with Fiberworkshop Norfolk Horn DK to make a Saltburn Sweater by The Knit Purl Girl

Hello Jane. I joined the cowl KAL but have had eye surgery and a nasty fall so am a bit behind. I’m just starting on the third colourwork band, so nearly there. I’m about to frog a Felix sweater knitted in a WYS Aran weight. 6mm needles, didn’t like the fabric, forgot what size I was knitting etc so am cutting my losses. Pattern and yarn both fine but in this case not together.

That was fun! It made me think of my 2023 knits in the same way. My most warn was definitely Effervescent from Pom Pom 41 (I think) in Dornie Donegal fingering in the most amazing green and the most loved probably Slipstravaganza in Holstgarn. I loved knitting with the colour playing together. I am not sure about the worst.. there was nothing I really didn’t like and if it was it was frogged ❤
