Additional Info: Seems GM has stopped making and selling any new Bolts. The recall covers 100% of all Bolts ever made. GM has stated that until LG can guarantee defect free batteries, any repairs/replacements are on hold. GM is waiting for LG to confirm defect-free cells/battery packs.

I have been trying to get a used 2017 bolt ev but the dealers literally wont sell them to me. lol. When they do start selling them again I am going to try and use the recall to haggle it down a bit.

The recall happened on the same day my Bolt was delivered to my chevy dealership in Quebec City. As a result, they could not release it. Unfortunately, my previous car failed me a month ago. I contacted GM to see of they could find a solution to help me until the battery issue is solved. I’m not even sure if GM really tried to help or not, but after three weeks I only received one phone call and no proposals. End of story, I cancelled my Bolt order and will take delivery of an Ioniq plug-in hybrid tomorrow. Needless to say, I have not been impressed with GM’s customer service.

Went to a chevy dealership today (9/14/21). Told us they couldn't sell or even allow us to test-drive bolts until the battery pack recall is finished. God only knows when that will be.

Hi and thanks for watching. Yes I am aware and that is too bad as they will loose potential sales during this process. For sure, they have no idea how long the fix will take, however new inventory will be done faster than the existing owner vehicles. I think this may take 2 years to sort out. Too bad, the Bolt is a great BEV.

Great review. We are ordering our Bolt EUV this week - may not see it until 2023 but all good. I originally sat in one at the Detroit auto show in 2017 ( standard Bolt) and was pretty impressed at the time. I hope GM/LG Chem is over the battery issues but I suspect they are... In any case thanks you for the video and have a great day! Mike 🇨🇦 🍁 👍

Hi Mike, much thanks for watching and I really appreciate the feedback. Hey, congrats on getting the Bolt EUV, a really good BEV at a great value! It will bring you years of easy ownership and lower operating costs for sure! Yes, the battery issue has been solved by LG Energy and the stop sales is now lifted with production starting back a couple of weeks ago. I am hearing in Canada that delivery ETAs are 1-3 months, so you may not have to wait till 2023 depending on where you are. I am guessing in the U.S. I would bet you will receive it sooner. Send me an email once you get it and have a couple of weeks under your belt, as I would love to see your feedback! Oh, and thanks for joining the "EV Revolution"!

@@EVRevolution Thank you! My wife and I are excited for sure...been investigating this for a while. We went to Earth Day at Malden Park in Windsor on Sunday and they had an EV Car Show. I was already fully convinced but my wife had to hear it for herself. She spoke with a number of Bolt owners and she came away with - "let's order this week" so I do as I am told! Have a great day and again thanks for doing your video...one of the best, down to earth reviews I have seen. Mike

This is from my personal experience in the EUV: Super Cruise works very well, completely hands-free on approved interstate highways. It does keep a close eye on the driver. It definitely knows if you are not looking at the road (eyes closed or looking at something to the side of the car, kids in the backseat, infotainment screen, or phone). After 5-6 seconds, the green light bar on the steering wheel will start flashing. But it does not make any kind of sound. This bothers me since by definition you are not looking toward the steering wheel. After 10-11 seconds, the steering wheel light bar flashes red, there is an alert sound, and you are told to take manual control. I'm not sure super cruise actually disengages, but it seems like it does. (Edit: Manual says, "Take over steering, then Super Cruise will disengage.") After testing it to that point 2 or 3 times, super cruise would not engage again until car was restarted. I wish that I knew what would happen if you didn't take control, if you were unconscious, for example, if it would stop in a controlled manner. (Edit: Manual says, "Continued failure to take over steering will cause the vehicle to brake to a stop and onstar will be called. The brake lamps and hazard warning flashers will come on.") Super Cruise was included for 3 years on our 2022 EUV Premier Launch Edition.

It's hard not to talk about the EUV without comparing to the EV, as they are only a few thousand dollars apart in Canadian pricing and the EUV is a better deal to me.

Welcome back from your vacation Ken! Great review, this seems like a good choice for many as the price is not much higher than the regular Bolt, with more passenger room and some nice extra features available such as the sunroof with shade and Supercruise. Hopefully the issues with current Bolt vehicles are resolved soon, I think GM may need to arrange buybacks for many customers unable or unwilling to wait for repairs, as the limited safe operating range and charging restrictions will make these unsuitable for many.
@EVRevolution
@EVRevolution 3 года назад
Thanks JP, appreciate as always your support and feedback! Yes it is a very good BEV. The Achilles-heel would be DC Fast Charging pull. Below 60kW is slow by today's standards and waiting 50 minutes to potentially over an hour for a 10-80% charge, does cast doubt on the long-road-trip-ability of this vehicle. It can certainly be done, but that experience will fall short of many others that are being offered with a large selection of today's BEV offerings. If I look at some comparisons, the saving grace here somewhat is the price point, but a loaded Bolt EUV like what I tested, will net out about $1,500 CAD less than a Standard Range Plus Tesla Model 3. Range wise, they are about the same in reality can compare well. However, for that $1,500 more in the Model 3 you get Supercharger Network which supports much faster charging, regular OTA's and a bigger interior - although much lower to the ground. Acceleration and performance of course goes to the Model 3. And if this is important, you get a Frunk. So to compare, the Bolt EUV is easier to maneuver and park in city streets/parking lots and is higher, with good visibility. And the power sunroof IMO is a plus versus the all-glass roof. Another good comparison would be the Hyundai Kona Electric. Very efficient and about $400 CAD cheaper than the Bolt EUV, with the loaded Kona Ultimate. A negative to the Kona IMO is the small back seat, especially compared to the Bolt EUV. No contest there. Otherwise, very similar specs for both. The Kona does charge faster, pushing 77kW for DCFC, however the up to 80% times can be around 75 minutes, depending on the starting SoC. Which is again, slow by what has become the new norm of 20-30 minute up to 80% fast charging stops for many BEVs now that support Ultra-Fast Charging. However, for pretty well all of them, you have to pay much more. In summary, there is a compromise for the Bolt EUV and as a second BEV, it would be a great candidate for us (we are not looking to buy anything, but if we did it would for us come down to the VW ID.4 or Bolt EUV right now. Also, as a second car, the Nissan Leaf Plus is a great value with lowered pricing to make it very affordable. For urban commuting back and forth to work, or cases where home charging will the the vast norm, the Leaf Plus offers great value. The 40kWh version is also the cheapest BEV in Canada now, but the range is limited and would need to be looked at for a second car option. It too can work very well.

Hi Paul, thanks for watching and for the feedback! Good idea, I've been keeping my eyes on them and did request an interview, which I never heard back from them on. Personally, I am not so keen on this niche product which will excel in the range department, but for real-world every day practicality and driving in the dead of winter climates, I would pass. My take again is that this is a niche auto manufacturer which will sell some units. How many, I have not heard any forecasts from them. However, they sold out of their planned first "batch" of 330 vehicles, and have amassed over 7,500 reservations. Based on this, I don't see them really building more than 10,000 to 20,000 vehicles per year, if even that. Remember that they pretty well collapsed as a company back in 2011, and only came back in 2019 with the help of crowdfunding. Not a very strong business approach if you ask me. Additionally on the practicality front, their target market is limited as the Aptera, which seats two, wouldn’t work for a large family, a commuter in cloudy Seattle, a plumber who has to lug around equipment, etc, etc. Listen, I am not trying to bash these guys, as I applaud all companies getting into the EV game, especially adding other unique technologies like they have, as well as the other Solar-player Sono Motors in Germany. But the reality is they will make an extremely small impact on the auto marketplace and what we really need is practical and cost-effective mainstream all-electrified vehicles for the mass market, to be sold in the hundreds of thousands or more per year. Not a bunch of small niche companies that will slowly delivery trickles of vehicles this decade. Climate Change and health issues are not waiting for EV production to ramp up, it's a now problem and we need to act much faster. Just my perspective so sorry if I am not drinking the Aptera cool-aid.
@psweber
@psweber 3 года назад
@@EVRevolution Wow, I know influencers got a lot of negative feedback but did not expect you to dish it out when all I was doing was making a content suggestion. I thought as a climate concerned person, you would be glad for any/all efforts. Yes they did go under but only because they hired Detroit engineers who were used to the 'big three'. They went on to do other environmental projects before regrouping to start again. Most others would have given up and moved on but they seem to be comitted.
@EVRevolution
@EVRevolution 3 года назад
Hey Paul, sorry was not trying to be negative to your suggestion. I have reached out to them again to ask for an interview and to be able to provide this content on a future show. I was just trying to level set the playing field, sort to speak. Many get so enamoured by these startups and while they mean well, we need to stay focused and look at the big picture. I am certainly glad Aptera stayed committed and are moving forward again, with what looks like a good niche solution. I appreciate you making content suggestions and ask you to continue to do so. I try to provide what people want. Again, was just trying to put them into perspective, when looking at the entire EV market space and the actions going on there. Sorry if I came across as negative towards your suggestion, was not my intention.

I don’t understand the EUV if it’s pretty much the exact same size as bolt. Even less cargo room. The little bit of leg room helps but the side view shows it’s still hard to get legs in and head somewhat. I don’t think my dad could get in bc if limited mobility.
@Cakebattered

It doesn't have less cargo room. cargo space test, the EUV has more cargo room than the EV.
@EVRevolution
@EVRevolution 3 года назад
@Quick ICE Car Reviews Thanks for watching. Cargo size is very close between the two. Styling is what GM is going for, since the EUV looks more like a compact SUV, which are the hot sellers these days.
@EVRevolution
@EVRevolution 3 года назад
@Cake Batter Bolt EUV Specifications. Measuring 169.5 inches in length, 69.7 inches in width, and 63.6 inches in height, the Chevrolet Bolt EUV is much longer and a little bit wider and taller than the Bolt. The wheelbase, at 105.3 inches, is also longer. The Bolt EUV has 16.3 cubic feet of cargo space with its rear seats upright and 56.9 cubic feet with these seats folded. Bolt EV has a bit more cargo room, as I stated. Bolt EV has 16.6 and 57 cubic feet respectively, so slightly more. I know this seems counter-intuitive but that is the way it is.
@Agent77X
@Agent77X 3 года назад
It Chevrolet idea of creating another new name in the EV1 marketplace by using the Bolt and slightly improving upon it! All the rest is marketing driven!
@friedputty
@friedputty 2 года назад
Mostly boils down to styling differences: longer hood, longer wheelbase, and taller springs for more SUV-like styling. The extra rear legroom is useful to chuck more cargo back there but not really helpful for taller passengers since headroom is unchanged. I personally find the EUV less attractive than the regular Bolt EV (the low-profile tires look wrong for the style and get lost in those giant wheel wells), but GM offers fewer interior colors and options in the EV and the upcharge to the EUV is small, so it seems like the EUV is the new volume model and the EV is the value leader for fleets.

Ken; Is gm actually replacing the battery packs as opposed to just the battery modules? Everything I have read indicates that gm is only going to replace the modules. Trying to only replace the modules is a really, really, STUPID idea because, it is going to take technicians a lot more time to open the battery pack and replace the modules, than if gm supplied a new fresh, factory built, battery pack that can be bolted into the vehicles in just a few hours versus a few days for module replacement.
@MarkLLawrence
@MarkLLawrence 3 года назад
That, and how many technicians are actually properly trained to do module replacement?
@EVRevolution
@EVRevolution 3 года назад
@BB Cooter Thanks for watching. I do not know the exact details of cells only vs. entire packs. I agree with you that the entire packs should be dropped and the new ones bolted and connected up. That would be faster and more efficient. I have not heard for sure how GM will proceed but I believe it may be a combination of these two approaches.
@EVRevolution
@EVRevolution 3 года назад
@Mark Lawrence Agreed.
@patreekotime4578
@patreekotime4578 3 года назад
@@MarkLLawrence Yup. My only thought with this is that there is some reasoning related to how GM handles recalls and parts inventory that requires the new modules to be in the original pack casing. Which would mean its a parts beurocracy problem on top of the recall problem. Which could explain why GM was hesitant to do the full recall to begin with.

@@EVRevolution I went to a Chevy dealership today (Dec. 2nd) and was told that they are replacing the whole battery pack - they showed me three battery packs that were sitting in their crates on the service room floor in huge wooden boxes that have to be lifted with a forklift truck. Apparently battery production has started in an LG plant in Germany with better quality control (apparently they found out what the problem was). He was not sure how long the replacement program would take - it started here in Quebec a few weeks ago. He had heard that new vehicle production had started up again in Detroit, but may have been halted for some reason!

@EVRevolution
@EVRevolution 3 года назад
Hello and thanks for watching! That's a great question and I really don't have a clear answer for you. I can tell you with my Tesla Model 3, when Sentry Mode is running, I can lose about 25km of range a day, for the car just sitting there. For the Bolts, they don't have that system so the stand-by power drain is much less. I would comfortably say if you had your car fully charged and let it sit, it should be ok for a couple of weeks. Your best bet is to search the User Forums for more info.

How much to charge that 75percent compared to gas cost at the time. Thats my big selling point. If it drives my electric bill way up whats the use going electric. I know enviroment. Im looking at bottom dollar
@EVRevolution
@EVRevolution 2 года назад
Thanks for watching and your question. Costs are going to vary by region, however I can tell you what it would cost me. As an example, my Tesla Model 5 has a 75kWh pack. To charge from 10-80% at home costs me about $5-$6 Canadian. My home electricity bill has risen about $30-$35 per month more, with EV charging. I do about 2,000 kms of driving PER month. My September 2020 Model 3 has over 42,000 kms on it and it has cost me about $800 in charging to drive that distance. Comparing to gas, right now its over $2 Canadian PER litre of fuel. If I stick with $2 per litre, average car tank size is 50L, that is about $100 bucks to fill it up to go about 600kms on average. To go 40,000kms on gas, my cost would be about $6,600 in fuel (40,000 / 600 = 66 fill-ups @$100 each). So a savings of about $5,800 per year. You can do the math on your own gas vehicle costs, as of course if varies. However, the savings is SUBSTANTIAL. That is not including lower maintenance costs and possible car insurance costs being lower as well. Anything else "bottom dollar"?

Even more impressive was the fact that I didn't really try very hard to get that many miles out of it. I spent plenty of time in traffic, which helped, but there were a few sections that I was moving along at 65-70 mph as well. Thanks for watching Harry. For OEM rankings, GM does sit at the #1 spot for U.S. sales in CY 2020, however globally last year they finished in 4th spot, behind the Renault Nissan Mitsubishi alliance at number 3, VW Group at number 2, and Toyota at number 1. For the end of Q1 2021, it is a different story for GM as they sit at #6, behind #5 Hyundai-Kia, #4 Stellantis, #3 Renault Nissan Mitsubishi, #2 VW Group and #1 Toyota. For EV/Plug-in rankings, Telsa is in top spot for sales and manufacturing for YTD 2021, followed by VW Group, the SAIC-GM-Wuling venture (China), BMW Group, Stellantis and BYD. GM is not even in the Top 10 Globally for EV sales in 2021. Other than their joint Chinese partnership with the Wuling Mini EV. Just to set the record straight. Appreciate your enthusiasm and I know GM will start cranking it up within the next few years.
