As a German I really like Claude’s accent 😅.. more easier to understand like other guests of your podcast 😂 and he is one of the smartest reef guys we have in Germany … so it’s always a pleasure to participate of his knowledge.

Great interview. I met Claude a number of years ago in Orlando. I think it might have been one of the first Reefapaloozas. Super nice guy and super passionate. I remember our conversation was about CO2 scrubbing and media that they were coming out with which back then was the first I had heard about it.

I'll get in while the comments are low count. This was really good. I'm glad to see the mindset you are taking Adam and asking the right questions. Comparing traditional methods to new styles/products/technologies and saying hmmmm. I think a big factor that is super rare to hear about and I would appreciate of you get some perspectives on it from your vast sources of knowledgeable people is "disolved organic carbons" or DOC'S. I'm very curious how these relate to carbon dosing in terms of there effects but also how they relate in terms of there makeup. So while we talk about no water changes No one is talking about DOC'S which are building up and even being produced by the organisms in the tank. From what I understand they can only be regulated by water changes, carbon or Ozone. Of course we can slow they're accumulation but eventually they pile up. I believe these also fuel alot of bacterial issues and even cyano etc. Yet people say when they run carbon they get stn rtn. So I don't know

I believe sponges are proven to injest/absorb DOC's

I can see I’m going to need to listen to this one a number of times there’s a lot of interesting discussions. The lighting and coloration of corals is another one in particular. I have been looking at the idea of UV and metal halide lighting having something to do with coloration. But if I understand what Claude is saying it may have more to do with the visible spectrums and not UV.🤔

would baking the epsom salt in the oven do anything to reduce the organics?

I doubt it would change any of the impurities if there were aluminium, etc...

Can we see some kind of data on sodium bicarb resulting in higher ph than sodium carbonate? That statement doesnt make a lot of sense to me.
@fraggarage5922
@fraggarage5922 7 месяцев назад
I think the idea is that the bicarb has a more stable effect over time, as it reacts, kind of like the tortoise and the hare. Whereas, the soda ash races ahead and then gets tired as it drops down again. That said, the FM KH component has some soda ash in it as well.

The current discussion is interesting, I’m not sure I would agree that at night time there’s no current. Current is based on the Ebben flow of the tides from the moon they reversed direction and there is an app. And sometimes it’s during the day and sometimes that’s at night.. What you might get a reduction of is solar generated changes in current. the heat of the sun can cause changes to the tidal currents.
@Justin-kk6yc
@Justin-kk6yc 8 месяцев назад
I believe Claude was being sarcastic when he said there was no current during the night, he was more implying that when a dive group goes out at night they look for places in the reef that has less flow so no one can get lost.
