I will redo the UV tests soon. I underestimated how much UV was blocked buy the windshield. The driver/passenger side windows do let in more UV which I tested as well, but to do things properly I need to leave a sample in direct sunlight. Due to my schedule when I get to do my videos and tests its tricky to do things in the daytime, hence the car test while I was working. I will prepare some samples this week and hoping to be able to do the test this weekend. My apologies for a flawed test 😬
@Chiberia
@Chiberia Год назад
Yes, most car windows block significant UV. There are also many different UV wavelengths, and LEDs don't cover the spectrum... raw sun is definitely where it's at. The good part about the car paper is it acts as a control... you can confidently say the fading is from UV and not heat if/when it fades.
@petertwang
@petertwang Год назад
If you really want to accelerate the UV degradation of the ink, try a shorter wave UV source. 405 nm is bordering on the visible spectrum and is not as energetic. 254 nm will probably fade it much faster, but it's more hazardous (generates ozone, dangerous to look at, avoid skin exposure, might cause some plastics and elastomers to become brittle or yellow). 365 nm could be a safer option. Sunlight has a broader UV spectrum than lamps like these that emit narrow spectra. High wattage is like throwing more photons at the ink, but the photons don't necessarily have the energy to break it down. But I think any light-based method of clearing the ink is also likely to damage the components in the pen. I wonder what they're putting in this ink to make it so persistent, yet somewhat sensitive to photodegradation. Maybe it's the high concentration of pigment/dye, so even a tiny residue will stain, but the colorant itself is not very lightfast.
@AdolphusOfBlood
@AdolphusOfBlood Год назад
You already have your UV light, run the tests with that. You'll get less variance then you'd get in a real world test, I'll be it your results will be on the conservative side.

@@Chiberia Not clear how you know it's not the heat. I'm thinking of the similarity to gel inks that disappear when cold and reappear when heated.

@@petertwang The sunlight doesn't contain much 254nm anyway, atmosphere blocks it. 300-350nm should be enough, but LEDs in this range are uncommon or expensive. Behind a window is enough in my experience.

My family didn’t realize that our new 1971 Plymouth Fury station wagon had tinted windows until we watched a drive-in movie one Summer night. All the colors on that Peanuts film were wrong. My dad found out that they installed tinted windows on all cars with air conditioning. Our 1968 Plymouth sedan didn’t have tint or A/C. IDK if the non-A/C cars in 1971 also had tinted windows.

My car's windshield (and all other glasses as well) filters UV and IR light, and it's not even tinted. You can easily test the IR filtration with your own skin, because you feel a significative change in temperature on your skin with the sun shining. Also the UV filtering prevents my photochromic glasses from turning dark. ( I didn't see the whole video yet)

I wouldn’t use bleach to clean any of my pens, vintage or modern, far too caustic. Your piston might have become stiff because the bleach reacted with the rubber seal. Might be interesting for your viewers to leave various samples in some bleach for a few days and see what happens. BTW, rubber gloves still make my eyes water, but the new PSA test is a doddle. 🙃

I was thinking afterwards the bleach could do a really good job of removing the silicon grease so that could have caused it to get sticky
@henryptung

Bleach seems much scarier than isopropyl alcohol, at any rate. The former is an oxidizer that can chemically eat away at materials, including plastics - the latter is at least only a solvent, which can damage plastic by infiltrating and distorting the structure but isn't nearly as reactive.
@waynebosma6456
@waynebosma6456 Год назад
Nice video! couple of notes here: 1) While bleach is basic, it is a weaker base than ammonia, which is the active ingredient in most pen flushes. The action of the bleach here (like with your clothes) is due to its strength as an oxidizing agent. I worry a little about that damaging plastic and rubber. 2) To get BSB off of your hands, hand sanitizer works well. Of course, that is alcohol based, and there are concerns about using alcohol with some plastics. I might be more inclined to use alcohol than bleach, though. 3) I once taped a piece of paper with BSB writing on it to the inside of a house window for a couple of weeks. It faded to almost nothing.
@johnpekkala6941
@johnpekkala6941 Год назад
As I understand for bleach to stay stable at any concentration and not break down over time it needs to be kept at above PH11 by adding sodium hydroxide meaning it will probably be quite agressive even using household bleach strength cause u have extra NaOH added to the mix to slow the decomposition. Here is a good video about how bleach works in detail including the thing about PH level. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YV6lZbvZBSI.html. I have however never measured the actual PH of household concentration bleach myself as I have neither no such equipment or the chemical itself at home but this video is where I got this info from.
@waynebosma6456
@waynebosma6456 Год назад
@@johnpekkala6941 Thanks for pointing that out. I wasn't aware that there is likely excess sodium hydroxide present in bleach. I don't have a pH meter at home, either. I could try some pH paper, but that would no doubt turn white, rather than an indicator color. 🙂

Here is another fun science experiment with BSB. The chemistry is so different from other inks, Tardif warns users to never mix it with other inks (not even with the two other "Baystate" colours). I saw Brian Goulet do it so I: tried it myself: take a sample vial and mix in about 1:1 BSB and any other random ink. In some cases it will start to outgas some bubbles, in others you get a viscous goo that will jam feeds. I once actually did this to a pen semi-accidentally but a good rewash solved it. (water ran clear through it, but after pulling out the nib and feed it was clear the collector had plenty of residue to chemically react with). After a good wash, the regular ink was again flowing through the de-BSBed pen.

I just stumbled upon some really inexpensive paper that works fantastically well with fountain pens! Maybe not as well with juicy flex nibs, but a regular nib? No problem, you can write on both sides of the paper, there is no show-through, no bleed through at all. It's a regular spiral bound notebook made by Staples in its Earth-something brand, where the paper is 80% from sugarcane pulp! I have this really old notebook, from nearly 20 years ago, and I picked it up and started scribbling notes in it, and couldn't believe it. So I went looking to see if I could find such a notebook again, and I did! It has a slightly different name, but it is made by Staples and is an eco-type brand. I just ordered three of them. When I get them I will write you a note, if you are interested. It isn't fancy paper, but it isn't like regular paper either. The ruling is college rule, and the lines are a light brown. The paper has a different texture, it's shinier and kind of thin feeling, but no show-through at all with a regular fountain pen and ink. I was using Diamine oxblood, and also some Diamine firefly. If I dumped ink on it, that might show through, but writing did not. Had no trouble at all filling both sides of the pages with text.

1. Victory! Persistence, and following the directions, pays off! 2. Baystate Blue failed my lightfastness tests pretty badly, along with most other inks I tested. And I've had two colored pencil drawings (with two brands of pencils) ruined by just the blue fading. Maybe blue is a problem. 2. Last week I had my first Baystate Disaster. Granted it was with Baystate Cranberry, but presumably the chemistry is the same. The bottle lid got screwed up somehow. I even got some on my foot, where it remains. But I got it out of the carpet with diluted bleach. It did require quite a bit of pressure and scrubbing. It was harrowing. I have chosen to discard my Cranberry and Grape, because they are not exceptional colors. But I'm hanging onto Baystate Blue because it is blue, blue, blue. I'll only use it in sketchbooks to minimize sun exposure. 3. For me the fadability is much worse than the staining. My intention moving forward is to switch entirely to De Atramentis Document inks, and live with whatever range of colors they provide. I'll try some more mixing. And the waterproofness is gravy.

@@CalcprofSomewhat related: I tried out a chinese ink brand by the name of BAOKE. Seems like a carbon pigment ink. It writes asolutely jet black and it is the toughest ink I have ever tried. It doesnt stain as bad as BSB but the pigment itself is almost impossible to erase. It is completely waterproof, undiluted bleach and IPA does absolutely nothing to it. I havent tried UV exposure yet but im willing to bet it doesnt fade since it is carbon

i was surprised that the uv light didn't fade it more. it's possible that Nathan has added uv protection since there were complaints about it. there are many inks that change colors, often growing darker, after a day or two in a journal, so light isn't the only thing that can change it. i was really worried your plunger was kaput, lol, but it pulled through! alcohol, tough, might swell it! also, another cleaner option is hydrogen peroxide. but i don't know if it will react to the irons in red inks. funny video as always, have a great weekend.

Thanks for your experiment. I have to report that with the Twsbi Eco, I have had my piston get stuck even cleaning it with dish soap / ammonia based cleaner that I make for my pens. What I've imagined is happening is the silicone grease is being removed, and when you get down to less lubrication the piston will seize and need to be reassembled/regreased to function again.

To test for comparative lightfastness, I write the same single line of text on the same sheet of paper repeatedly with a left margin of 1/3 of the width of the paper, each line in a different ink, then fold the margin over to cover half of the texts, and place it in a Southern-facing window, and check periodically. Some inks are far more fugitive than others.

I had BS Blue in a platinum 3776 for years. When I went on to other inks, I cleaned it out. It's fine now. (to be sure, I did replace the converter, but I didn't want to take the old one apart -- I should have, because the platinum converters are easy to disassemble.). I had some bad staining from some other ink in my Schon DSGN peak full sized. So I just used alcohol (on the body and cap -- not the nib and feed, which I removed.) Ultem, I believe, is also perfectly OK with alcohol. Of course most acrylics are damaged by alcohol , so be careful.

to get a desired concentration, you use the CVCV formula. (conentration and volume). You know the starting concentration of store-bought bleach, you know the desired concentration, and you pour up a given volume of the starting solution. c1*v1 = c2 * v2 --> (c1/c2) * v1 = v2. So just add water to the concentrated stuff until it is at the volume v2 that you calculated

I have tried writing samples with different dilutions of BSB & water. It does seem to behave a bit better when in a diluted state. Something fun to play with. Many of the Noodlers colors will shade in a more remarkable manner when diluted with H20. My favourite so far is Whalemans Sepia, and in a super-flex it lays down the ink in a drab, matte, brownish gray...but shades in a pinkish tone. Very fun to play with.

My own testing w/ inks in sunlight over several months on the inside of a house window has shown that BSB fades faster than many other blues. That said, it isn't claimed to be lightfast so that doesn't really bother me. It is remarkable how variable the amount of stability of light differs from ink to ink. I've also used bleach to clean BSB, I try to avoid the bleach with scents etc because who knows what those compounds are and I want to flush as clean as possible afterward. I would not leave bleach in contact with the compressible rubber (gaskets, piston, etc) for any longer than necessary and make sure you do grease it back up while crossing your fingers. Great tests, keep it up.

But good test! even if in my experience 1 week of window exposure makes it fade to nothing, maybe it needs deeper UV which only the sun provides, your UV is very close to visible range and not that "deep". 385nm or less is likely more effective.

Do a 6 month to 12 month test. The BSB started corroding the rubber piston seal in my TWSBI Eco. I was still able to get it clean, but BSB was definitely eating away at the black rubber, caused it to bubble up on the surface and degrade around the edges.

We have had the Thrilla in Manila, The Rumble in the Jungle, and we now have The Battle North of Seattle. What was the final pH on the bleach? Is there a difference in pH when the bleach meets Baystate Blue?

Any idea how well the BSB would stain something like concrete or metal? Wonder if I could use it in my street markers for the super staining
@Doodlebud
@Doodlebud Год назад
Ohhhh.... its stains it. Concrete would probably really soak it up. I've seen pics of stainless steel sinks with serious stains from BSB. Those can be removed, but concrete might be pretty damn permanent due to its porosity.

I would have tried peroxide since it's UV activated. Or can those pens be cleaned with peroxide?

(Ink poured back into the bottle... 😬 ) I just a dedicate a cartridge/converter pen to BSB, then I don't have to do that level of pen cleaning - just a couple quick bulb-flushes of the grip section with a soapy bleach solution, followed by a few more with clean water, then set aside to dry. The next day, I re-ink with more BSB. I use full bleach to clean everything else - hands, sinks, etc. 😂

Hello. I'm kind of new to fountain pens, but I have three now. The first was a Noodler's Ahab, which wouldn't write more than a few lines. So, I cleaned it, tried moving that feed a teeny bit, and finally bought a new nib, the same nib, I think, the flex nib, extra fine? (Can't remember now.) But it is now practically spilling ink out of the feed. And I don't know what to do. I get ink all over my fingers. What did I do to it to cause that? I think I've fixed this, just needed some silicone. I hope that does the trick. Now one of my other pens won't write.

I would be more worried about what UV would do to the TWSBI barrel as plastics tend to deteriorate in UV I memory states that TWSBI say dont use alcohol as it has a detrimental effect to their plastics

I wonder if the standing is caused by similar chemical that's in tomatoes that stains plastic. I recently found out you can use butter to remove that from plastic. that might be an interesting test in this application.

Just like the visible light spectrum, the UV spectrum covers many wavelengths (400nm - 10nm). UVa (400nm - 325nm) is not much worse than blue light for causing fading. UVb (325nm - 275nm) causes considerably more fading (but glass absorbs these wavelengths). We don't see much UVc (275nm - 200nm) on earth, but if the sample would be exposed to UVc, it would fade dramatically within a few hours. Wavelengths shorter than 200nm (i.e. VUV) are extremely destructive (these wavelengths are near the boarder of the X-ray wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum), but we don't see these wavelengths on earth (outside of a laboratory where special precautions are used). I'm not sure what wavelengths of UV your lamp was emitting (I suspect UVa), but I believe you would see much more fading if the writing sample were exposed to direct sunlight (i.e. NOT on the dashboard of your car). If you took the writing sample to a laboratory with VUV lamps (and special shielding to protect the lab workers from direct exposure), the paper would be completely white within a couple of hours.

UV and plastic are no-go. This is a bad idea. I might be OK once, but in the long run the plastic may turn yellow and becomes cloudy.
