In Episode 20, we tackle the big question of whether or not musicians in church should be paid... this is a big one. And you might be surprised by some of our dialogue!
We discuss some of the positive and negative affects that paying (or not paying) musicians can have on a worship team. At the end of the day, how are we best supporting and inspiring growth, community, and unity within the local church to the best of our ability and our leadership?
For this episode, we thought we'd bring in our panel of worship leaders and musicians with Worship Online - Libby Lewis, Brenton Miles, and Shalon Palmer - Laughter is inevitable when you get these three together... it's also key to a healthy conversation about something that could be considered controversial. So enjoy the craziness.
Don't forget, thru the month of April ('18) we're giving away $100 gift cards to Guitar Center! Listen for more details on how to win!
If you have any questions you would like to ask us to consider for discussion on the podcast, please e-mail us at podcast@worshiponline.com!

@@stevesmith1493so you're suggesting a church grows through paying it's servants? Isn't it God who grows the church by bringing people to repent to him? Or do you think that if there are highly trained professionals being payed to play there, more people will show up? If so, do you think quality music is the reason a person should come to church?

@@julianmanjarres1998 God is a God of absolute excellence. Sure, great worship is as good of a reason as many to attend a church. Nothing more distracting than bad worship, unruly children, and poorly kept facilities to run off good people. Most churches pay the janitor, lawn guy, maintenance, secretary , etc. They also fire them when they aren’t good. Musicians fall into that category for me. Hire great ones and try to keep them. I even remember the pianist and organist getting paid back in the day. NOBODY had a problem with that! Why? Because you can’t play hymns without a pianist and only skilled musicians who have committed years to training can play. Pretty simple actually. Plus, worship is highly visible and maybe the very first thing a person sees. It’s critical to church growth.

It depends on the size of the church and the demands it puts on musicians. 2. If the musician has hit a point where they are consistant, and play at a high level. You might get a new musician learning the ropes and do not play at a high level. But if a musician is putting in more than 8 hrs. Serving in combined fashion of at home learning the material, going to rehearsal for the band, and doing a service or more than 1 service, pay them 80 to a hundred bucks minimum. Remember there is wear and tear on vehicles for travel, Gas, time, and food. If a musician is at church at a given sunday for 6 hours, feeed them! As well wear and tear on instruments and equipment. If a piece of equipment needs to be fixed pay the bill. If they need new strings pay the bill or get them some strings. If they are bringing their own set of drums pay for a new symbol or new skins. Even smaller churches can show their appreciation through small contributions to the musician over time helping that musician meet the obligations or demands of the church they are serving at.

This is a complicated subject. I think it is different at every church. Smaller churches don’t have the budget to pay musicians. They also have less of a chance to have professional quality. Larger churches, especially mega churches, do however have a budget for and certainly demand professional quality. Music is a thing people can do as a hobby or a profession which can make this issue unclear. I say if professional quality is expected that pay the musicians, but also make sure they are following God’s call to minister and not just doing another gig. If the church can’t afford to pay the musicians, fine, but than don’t demand of them as if they are professionals.

It's actually unbiblical to NOT pay musicians (assuming the church is in a position to of course, a starter church where even the pastor is unpaid obviously isn't ready to). The Levites AND the musicians were 100% supported in the Bible. In fact, in Nehemiah, Israel was rebuked for not bringing proper tithe to the temple because the Levites AND singers (musicians) had to abandon the temple and work the fields to support themselves. Why? Because God desires excellence. If we're going to worship the King of Kings, we should be doing so with our "First fruits" not leftovers. Coming into the service tired from a 40 hour work week at a full time job unrelated to worship after having run through the songs a handful of times because there was no more time/energy to do so is NOT first fruits.

Let's go further we can also be deacons, pastors, and ushers. However the rest of the congregation including the position I just name can not provide the anointed music. Playing for church is a full set. And to be at the level to be paid or accepted by a church is more dedication and time than the avg worshipper. Drenched in sweat after playing 1 song for 7 minutes.

Being a janitor, a secretary, a lawn person is a business. Church should not be, worshipping God is not a business. If you get paid to worship, then it doesn’t come from the heart. If you don’t get paid anywhere, will you want to give the same energy to worshipping God?? I am the worship leader at my church. I have a full time job and I take the time to worship God for free. So the question is there, if you don’t get paid to worship, would you quit worship?

@shortylos worship leader what is harder leading the worship. Or knowing how to play the instrument that is backing the worship.... not a deceitful question. But I play drums organ, piano, bass, and sing... and they cost money to even get started and the logged hours to even be paid. Is just crazy so let's get back to the actual truth here. Its great you have another job, so essentially, what you're saying is your job has u financially set. Where other musicians only want to be musicians, nothing else... and only a number of ways to do that... play for a mainstream artist that is not Godly. I've seen plenty of Katie Perry stories. Or stay where your soul can be saved in church where they tell u don't be worldly. But expect u to go find a real job... where your mind and heart are not completely on God and giving your talent 1000% to him... and their are musicians who make over 100k a year just playing music... and 9/10 they are the musicians who play on every contemporary gospel song since like 2000- till now. Do you believe visiting pastors and prophets should be paid?.

@@bilbojohnson9191 Paul the Apostle probably spent a lot of money for his training under renowned tutors like Gamaliel, yet when he (Paul) got converted he willingly spent time and money in voluntary service to God Acts 22:3; 2Cor. 12:11-18. By the way, who says singers (back up and lead) don't spend time and money in training? Same for teachers and other church workers. Excellence in ministry is not limited to instrumentalists.
@bilbojohnson9191
@bilbojohnson9191 3 года назад
@@blessingecoma9233 Paul was paid in a sense though, (because of the support he received from various churches) so that argument doesn't hold water. Check out 1 Corinthians 9 on Paul's use of resources (i.e., money) for ministry. My point was not to argue anything about singers, singers are musicians as well. I intentionally did not mention singers in my comment above because much of the same applies to singers. My point is this: some people are compensated for their contribution, others are not. There must, therefore, be a basis for determining who is and who is not compensated. If you want to argue that no one should be compensated, that's fine. But it is no where near comparable to suggest that ushers and musicians serve to the same degree therefore neither should be paid (that they're in the same category of should or should not be paid). Or that if musicians are paid, the so should ushers etc. At my church, when I serve on the weekends, it's rehearsal saturday afternoon followed by saturday evening service, then 3 services on sunday. it's almost 12 hours of serving per weekend. This does not include the hours you spend at home learning parts/charts. It also does not include the years required to master the craft. you're also expected to have professional equipment (expensive guitars, pedals etc), which you have to bring back and forth. Whereas ushers serve a single service typically, requires no training outside of church, requires no financial investment, and does not require extra time practicing at home. If you want to argue that singers should be included in who ought to be paid, fine. But it remains true that ushers, sunday school teachers etc that you mentioned do not serve to the same capacity.

@@bilbojohnson9191 a cleaner, in a school for example, does not spend as much time, effort and funds as a teacher in learning their trade. Yet, they are both paid, even if the cleaner earns less than the teacher. I truly hope this discussion we're having is seen as what I believe it is; a healthy examination of if church musicians should be paid or not, I do not wish to cause offence. I've served in church choirs for over 20 years in various capacities. There are rehearsals, at least twice a week. Services three times a week. Special programs at least once a month. Not to add rehearsals and programs which hold at different times a year in different branches under the 'parent' church. I've also seen committed, talented Christian singers/Instrumentalists experience under-appreciation, over-use, frustration, burn out etc. And I've even experienced same and sought healing. To be balanced, I've also seen the greed, competition, pride etc that goes on within these circles and even amongst pastors and church leaders. Apostle Paul was appreciated and honoured by churches in his time. His commitment to God's work was not based on this. Check out vs. 12-19 of 1st Cor. 9 and you'll see that 'that argument' is full of water, raining in fact. Lol. The reality is, its a choice to be a church worker or not. If a person gets born again and chooses to use their passion and talents to serve and minister for God, in whatever capacity; to win souls, build faith, encourage, uplift etc, remuneration should not be the primary consideration or become the bone of contention it has become in some Christian circles today. So many in ministry have lost the joy and fulfilment of serving in ministry. Even more are up for grabs to the highest paying churches/ministries and sometimes end up in places where the gospel is a tool for materialism or worse. God bless you.

In Luke 10 verse 7 Jesus says: '... those who work deserve their pay' (NLT). As a musician, as well as being a Christian, I think that in a large church with a large congregation and which has a substantial income (from tithes and offerings) - musicians should always be paid, and paid generously. HOWEVER, if the church is small, and the income is small, then this is not a realistic possibility. Here in the UK the overwhelming majority of churches have relatively small congregations, and therefore have small incomes. Thus not many worship musicians in the UK ever get paid - it's almost unheard of, in fact. Only those who perform at larger venues - such as Lucy Grimble, Graham Kendrick, etc. can expect payment here in the UK. Sadly, some of the large churches iin the US are run AS BUSINESSES. The famous televangelists - usually multi-millionaires - have become rich due to the generosity of their congregations. Indeed, the obscene levels of wealth of some preachers/pastors is completely OTT. An example of this would be multi-millionaire and downright dodgy preacher Kenneth Copeland has no less than 7 private jets. From what I can ascertain from this side of the Atlantic, worship musicians in US churches are all too often exploited - I suspect by the very multi-millionaire pastors mentioned earlier.

Scripture says "Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain." To me, and this had been stated in the Elevation portion. Yeah, if your service demands a level of quality or additional time and input, you should probably at least be WILLING to pay your musicians. And on the other hand I get that the only real way to determine if someone would give it all they can even if they're not being paid is...well...not paying them. It IS however often interesting to how the thought that money corrupts motivation pretty much stops at musicians. No one (that I observe) asks that question about Kids Ministry service leads, or admin staff, and certainly not pastors. It certainly is an interesting topic for sure. And it IS potential a great CONTINUOUS cost to pay the band. So I understand the economic side of it as well. It is interesting to me why people feel they need drums, or guitar, or or or or or or. I love both of those things, but the "need" for them, as I observe, often seems to be rooted in an undue elevation of aesthetic. That was kind of all over the place. Love your stuff. KEEP DOING THE THINGS!!!

What I found most refreshing about your viewpoint is that is based on grace. "It depends" is the most complete response to this and many other issues surrounding church worship. People who do get paid are working to become professionals and have a strong understanding of there instrument. It doesn't matter what your age is either. But you should honestly asses how much your knowledge of your instrument is worth. I get paid $200 a service playing guitar. But I have my own gear been studying guitar since 17 and still get lesson from one of the top guitarist in my area who plays with Evan Craft, Lakewood, and Davie Davies who's with Tauren Wells. Did you know that musical education started in the church?- . The foundation of music was taught in the church, and after a short while, after country music got a hold of it and dumped it down, now Christian music can be played by individuals who have only been playing guitar for three weeks. And we can’t have horns because then that would take a horn arrangement which is usually written by someone w/theoretical music knowledge. Musicians should be paid directly from the Pastor’s salary. Maybe someday somebody will create an organization that will legally support these vital musicians that usher us into the presence of the Lord. It’s too bad that it may come to that, but as long as we have stingy preachers And pastors who live in $800,000 homes I guess somethings won’t change

Soooo if a person wants to make a career out of being a musician, if you’re condemning paying musicians in church then will you also judge that Christian musician if they’re playing on tour with artists who promote ungodly ideals with their music??? The church needs to support their own for one, secondly the church paid the architect who designed the church and they also pay the water company and the garbage company. Why do we treat musicians like they don’t deserve to be paid for their service? Contrary to popular opinion, being a musician takes hard work and dedication just like being anything else and if you think Christian musicians shouldn’t get paid at church, where should they be making their money? If you see that musician at a bar around half naked women playing, will you treat them differently and say they’re not saved?

@Z J so sad that, from your perspective, a career Christian musician can earn a living only by either being paid at church or through paid gigs from secular concerts etc...whatever happened to tutoring, gospel concerts etc. Is it possible to get income-generating ideas inspired by an active relationship with the Holy Spirit?

A musician should not be condemned for making a career out of music. They need to be discerning about if they are having a Godly influence however. I believe entertainment can have a Godly influence and that influence is much needed. People that think musicians should only be playing for church only if ever but than also say church musicians should not get paid are cutting off a whole industry that if done God’s way has the potential to influence our culture toward Jesus. I have noticed that many of these people that think like this are not musicians.

@@pililani_blessings you sound ignorant. So I bet you think the construction workers that built the church should do it for free and the plumbers should do it for free. Stop disrespecting musicians, being a musician IS a job and most are entrepreneurs. If you don’t like it, don’t hire them but you don’t hold the key to anyone’s success but your own.

This is a complicated subject. I believe praising our Creator through music is a critical requirement but I also believe having enough knowledge to witness the Gospel is at least as important. There must be a balance. Frankly if I gave most folks a test on K-Love song lyrics and a test on The Gospel, I believe most would get an "A" in K-Love lyrics and a "D" in Gospel knowledge. I dare ANY pastor to see if I am mistaken. How can we defend the gospel if we don,'t thoroughly know it?

What happened to the heart of worship, if it is even in the right place. If it is, why can't you trust your Father to provide.(e.g. thru money/etc wtv He deem fitting to our needs). 2) also the term Musician bugs me alot, because we r worship leaders FIRST.

So you quote Malachi and preach tithing but don't follow the scriptures, only compensating the pastors. How can you cherry pick one small portion of old covenant tithing and ignore everything else? In my opinion if you preach tithing, you should be paying the musicians.

If a church has to have a huge K-Love cover band, fancy coffee and cushy pews and a P. A. so big it scares Baal then they might want to recognize that they are more of a Christian Amusement Park than a " church" and that's ok. But if they want to be a church, part of their duty goes beyond entertaining folks and providing free coffee and day care. We are commanded to spread the Gospel and that requires more than just knowing the lyrics to every K-love tune. Be honest, how many members of most churches are equipped to go forth and spread the Gospel? And to defend it (1 Peter 3:15) I dare any sing a long get together assembly to give a short pop quiz to determine whether their congregation has the knowledge to do what Jesus commanded of us all. Then ask yourself how many wells in Africa could we build for the price of that in-ear monitor system? How many outreaches could we help if we used a 299$ Yamaha guitar instead of a 2300$ Taylor ( ouch) the list goes on..."giving your best to the Lord " doesn't, really mean buying the priciest gear. End of sermon 🙏🤔
