Sgt. John Mattingly is a retired 21-year veteran with the Louisville Metro Police Department in Kentucky. Sgt. Mattingly spent most of his career in narcotics and violent crime units trying to improve the quality of life for the citizens of the city he grew up in and loved. On March 13, 2021, Sgt. Mattingly was thrown into the national spotlight when he was shot while executing a search warrant at the residence of Breonna Taylor. The national and worldwide exposure and protests that stemmed from that tragic evening were amplified by the death of George Floyd. The lack of transparency by the police department and city, allowed speculation and outright lies to be compounded by the media, social media, celebrities, and athletes.
In an attempt to correct the record, he wrote a book, 12 Seconds in the Dark, that will be released March 15, 2022, and is currently available for pre-order on Amazon.
John has been married to his wife Nicki for 15 years, has 4 children, and has 2 grandchildren.

From a random guy who was on a SWAT Team for 6 years, thank you Andy for having these guys on to tell our side of the job. Most people never get to hear it and knowing your platform reaches so many people gives us hope that there are still people out here who want to hear our voices. Some of us are tired of being Martyrs!

Let me bust your door down in the middle of the night and come at you armed. They knew they already had the suspect locked up but since the boyfriend had lived there at one time or stayed the night there or used the address they called it a point of interest. They lied on report saying that the saw mail being delivered there that had drugs in it which was denied by the post office. They got rid of their camera one of the officers had the camera mount on his vest but no cam the cam vanished and nobody sought to inquire where the equipment was. This cop is dirty. He wants you to look by what he did when he knows he unjustly took someone's life. Look i have nothing against NO KNOCK warrants when they are followed by proper investigations i.e eyes on the residence, the no knock can be disengaged due to children or other person's on the scene, proper time to evacuate the surrounding area... what these cops are doing in that city is dangerous with no regard for public safety.

@BuddyHandsome Listen to this guy try and justify what he did. EVERY NON RACIST can see this man is dead wrong but him. They had him locked up in the jail and decided to raid every where he had been including her apartment. they lied and said they had proof that drugs were delivered there and it was flat out denied by the post office. REALITY IS they decided to raid her place because he once lived there...that is all. The idea he is making this shit up in his mind is f up. This person has not integrity. Not in the footage of the officers one of them had a body cam on that disappeared he had the mount for one but no cam and NOBODY questioned where the camera was. We have problem with policing in America of all places they will not stick to procedure or policy.

Thanks for this episode Andy. For me it’s always important to hear all sides. I don’t know if Mr. Mattingly will see this comment but I would like to thank him for his service as a police officer. Those guys get a lot of crap from the media and people who don’t understand what it takes to do the job on a daily basis. I’ve always tried to live an honorable life and set a good example for people that come from communities like mine. I left the Army after my second contract and I am now pursuing a federal LEO career. I know it won’t easy but I will give it my best.

His comments about process in which leaders are chosen…2-3 yrs on and put into admin spots, etc is spot on! I worked for a large state patrol for 26 yrs. I can count on one hand the amount of supervisors I truly respected. I love the men and women of that organization, but leadership was and will always be a joke…I’ll set this down here CHP.

@Labhrás O'Dochartaigh You don't suppose there's a law against letting a known drug dealer use your house? When you hang out with criminals, the likelihood that something bad will happen to you increases. That's a choice you make.

@olsparkywisenheimer8239 2 года назад
@Labhrás O'Dochartaigh I haven't done much research on this case honestly. My comment was about showing appreciation for the police, not about the specifics of this case. With the political climate at that time, I'd think if there was any evidence to the contrary, they certainly would've used it to prosecute this officer..

People are a fan of no-knock/no-announce warrants until the police make a mistake, go to the wrong house, ram your door open before shooting your dog. You wake up hearing gunshots, reflexively grab your nightstand gun and they dump their mags into you too. Hopefully none of the "accurate fire" goes through any walls and hits anyone else, like your children. God knows their yearly 25 yard quals don't make for very accurate fire.

I grew up in a poor working class drug infested dump. All of these dudes, that push heavy drugs like heroin or crack, use girls and their houses. They keep their drugs and or money there, and sometimes they sell out of the house, they will have the girls drive them around or deliver for them, buy them guns. This is extremely common. Usually they will have a couple girls, which means a couple spots.

I’ve never met this man and work for a different larger city doing a similar job and sadly this story sounds parallel to things I have experienced and witnessed. In terms of comparison, everything he talked about was true. It’s funny that what one witnesses as part of a situation and how it is reported in the media, are many times different stories I.e. lies

I’ve applied to become a police officer three times in my once quiet & peaceful, but now busy & suburban Texas hometown. They don’t want me. My DD214 isn’t good enough, and I don’t have enough college credits for them. Yet I’m 6’3, a very fit endurance athlete, and have a squeaky clean legal record. Not even a single speeding ticket. I had recently talked to a random mustached man at a local track who turned out to be a detective LEO in the nearby big city. He tried to convince me to apply there, but then went on to tell me that if anything even somewhat-questionable happened with me involved, then the city essentially wouldn’t have my back.
@angcol3465
@angcol3465 2 года назад
Amongst the many things I would like to say, I have to say something.. how is it that it is acceptable for this former officer’s loved ones to be attacked and targeted and harassed, as if they were in any way, part of his decision making that day (which as a former narc detective I know you did not deserve this situation to go as it did) but, we don’t pay attention to the fact that Brianna was part of an illegal narcotics enterprise… she knew she was involved in an illegal hurtful game, and it goes along with common sense that she was in some way benefiting from it… we should as a community hold those who enable the drug dealers or any other habitual criminal as it applies to this, to be held responsible and accountable. Furthermore, any one providing misinformation and lies to the public should be criminally charged.

Firstly Andy ... well done for getting this guy on and giving him a platform to be able to get some details/facts on the table. Secondly ... I see *CYA* all the way through this case. From the chief of police and the mayor (setting up sketchy property deals to help his retirement fund) all the way down the food chain. Andy said, "I do not see the system falling apart in the US" - I would love to have the confidence that you do on that issue, Andy. I am not seeing signs that are encouraging - not in the least. As I have said before ... I moved to India close to 12 years back as I could not live in England anymore after seeing what it had become (it is a LOT worse now). And I see the volume of people leaving certain states and even the US entirely ... you can join the dots from there. This whole "cops are bad" agenda has been brewing for a while but the last 2 x years have allowed it to burst it's banks and flood out of control. The media are complicit in maintaining these false narratives that whip up the angry mod with their pitchforks. Ran Paul only had one concern "how does this look for my political career?" Same shit different day from where I am looking at this. India has problems but the disintegration of our society from within helped by people of Indian nationality is sure as fuck not one of them! Good men getting thrown under the bus so that the cunts higher up the food chain can play the political game and keep their hand in the cookie jar at the same time ... this will not end well. As we say in London "this will get messy!" Defunding the police in NY/Chicago and other places I am watching is *NOT* going well so far and why the fuck would you expect it to? I have a list of countries I would not live in that I drew up 10 years back and the US is now on that list (as is Canada and Australia). Europe is completely going to down the toilet also ... I am an N.W. European Caucasian (Anglo Saxon male). While I have lived here in India not one person has accused me of gaining benefits in my life from white privilege and even though I am a big guy (the product of decades in the weight room) not one person has thrown the "toxic masculinity" mantle at me. You are more than welcome to be gay here but you *WILL NOT* be promoting it on prime time TV *EVER!* I see zero children in India being put on puberty blockers after being convinced by some fruit loop agenda that they are female even though they were born with a penis ... I could go on with the list but you know by now what I am going to put on it. So I reiterate ... Andy said, "I do not see the system falling apart in the US" - I would love to have the confidence that you do on that issue, Andy. I am not seeing signs that are encouraging - not in the least.

I lived in Jacksonville, Fl from 2007-2017. The City Limits is the Duval County Line. There is NO Jacksonville PD. There is only the Jacksonville Sheriffs Dpt. Some of the communities like Jacksonville Beach that was within Duval County had a small PD. But by and large Jacksonville Sheriffs Dpt was it. It was the same for the surrounding counties Clay, Nassau, Baker, but not sure about Flagler County.... It gave Deputies the flexibility to deal with a wide range of issues. From parking tickets to serving warrants and SWAT stuff. Within Duval County there was rural farm and forest lands, hard core inner city stuff, and fancy beach communities.

@Labhrás O'Dochartaigh that's a terrible generalization. I live in small town USA and the cops are the same dudes we go hunting and shooting with, do jiu jitsu with, and they are the same ones helping the community because they are part of the community. They aren't giving out frivolous tickets and harassing people for no reason. Their first question is generally "what can I do to help". I lived close to a young couple who were hopelessly strung out on meth. Instead of throwing them in jail, they did all they could to try and talk sense into them and help them. I had seen them drop off food and supplies and toys for their kids during Christmas. Unfortunately, using turned into dealing, as it often does, and the state got involved

Another example of why the "war on drug's" is pointless. Making something that's profitable illegal just makes a lucrative black market.

Great interview. However, I disagree. I was 21/22 when I started, and did 28 yrs. Age has nothing to do with ability to do the job. Character and training are key. I had 3 OISs and if any of those had happened today it would be a different outcome.

Notice how much cooler and less arrogant this cop is compared to the one who was on last week. Difference between a southern street cop and a big city California cop. You can tell this guy is 100x more likeable and has the right mindset for the job.

How was he arrogant if you don’t mind me asking? I thought he was quite humble, they tried to make an example out of him and he fought to clear his name.

@@denissgoc Has nothing to do with his case. His attitude was just lame. He was extremely dry to listen to and tried to act too cool for school not laughing at Andys hilarious jokes. He just had a BIG D0UCHÊ ENERGY.

There is a distinct difference between civil police and the military we have to stop conflating the two things. There not the same period

Hey Andy, a step in the right direction would be to reach out to the MOM and family who was affected. why would she accept .. no clue but at least talk about it because there is always two sides to a story and with your magic of words maybe the onion can be peeled back layer by layer. a guy once said hey there new guy there are no stupid questions...ok bud

None of the officers were wearing body cameras. Was this ever discussed in the interview? It may have been but I do not remember it coming up.
