We’re joined by our friend, Joel Muddamalle, to tackle what the New Testament says about speaking in tongues. Joel serves as the Director of Theology and Research at Proverbs 31 Ministries. He’s also written a brand new book called “The Hidden Peace”. You can pick up his book here: www.amazon.com...

I think it would be beneficial if you invite someone on who speaks in tongues. Maybe a part 2

“If that makes you feel close to God, great.” What we feel should have nothing to do with any doctrinal position. What the scriptures say should be our guide.

I love JP! Dude is a revolutionary. I would say that Paul in 1 Corinthians is evidently clear that tongues is not merely a languages barrier. Here’s why: 1. Multiple times in Acts, they were having clear dialogue before they spoke in tongues. Which means no language barrier existed. 2. Paul puts a clear distinction between the gift of tongues and the gift of interpretation. If I interpret, then i inevitably speak in tongues. - so, tongues is distinguishably different than just a language barrier. 3. Paul makes it clear that tongues is a language spoken to God that no other man understands, and he even says to pray for interpretation so that your understanding is fruitful. Not all speak with tongues. But to subject it to a language barrier is tough for me. Although, I preach and evangelize at many churches who do not believe in tongues!

You guys should do an episode about music. The type of music that you guys listen to and recommend. Talk about what music can be used to glorify God, and what music glorifies a secular society. It would be cool to see your guy's insights!

Hey there ! A tongue talker here lol. Thought I'd give a different perspective. To be very honest - these feelings of uncertainty are valid and make sense and this is exactly what 1 Corinthians 2:14 says - 14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him. So yes, from a very logical way of seeing things it does not make sense. But thank God for the Holy Spirit and his word - because the word always interprets and explains itself. So here are some thoughts: Agree with Joel (huge fan btw) - where tongues is mentioned there are 2 things being talked about. Notice that throughout 1 Corinthians 12 - 14 when Paul is talking tongues he is talking about gifts that should edify and lift up the church - so this is the first type of tongues if you would (other tongues and languages). So let's establish that these gifts all share one common trait - they are for the edification of the church. However, what we see in 1 Corinthians 14:15 - Paul makes it clear that he can pray in two ways - in the Spirit and in understanding. 1 Corinthians 14:2-4 - 2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. 3 But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. 4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. So here we see that praying in tongues or in the Spirit in this case, is for edification or building up oneself. Now there are so many places we could take this as well as many scriptures we can use to build on this but I think the best place to leave it is in Romans 8:26. "26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession [a]for us with groanings which cannot be uttered." So Paul here explains how the Spirit builds us up. And also keep in mind he was speaking to the reader of this letter (the Romans and by extension - the church). So this means that this gift is in fact, for every single person. It is available for all. Why? Because as it says - we really fdon't know how to pray as we ought. As humans we may think we know what to pray for when in actual fact, what we are holding on to would cause us destruction. It's like asking God to fix your 'stomach' when your heart is the actual problem. Praying in the Spirit allows the Spirit to intercede on our behalf and actually touch on the real matters we may not know of. The world we live in is twisted. We cannot rely on human intellect to deal with spiritual problems. I just pray that we can all go through scripture ourself and that our eyes are opened to see the amazing things God has given to those of us who believe. It's a powerful tool for the believer and my prayer is that you reading this realize that for yourself.

Agree. Copy pasting here a comment I just posted. If you read 1 Cor 14 line by line, examine each sentence carefully - it becomes (to me) evident that there could be two different kinds of tongues. The one spoken to unbelievers (a real language) as a sign - and the one spoken to God (no man understands). Speaking to God (unknown): 1 Cor 14:2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. Sign to unbelievers (known tongue): 1 Cor 14:22 Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers (e.g. upper room, Acts 1:12-14) I came to faith by God revealing himself to me very spontaneously (I was seeking, but in all the wrong places and had nothing to do with Christianity though I knew the concepts) - and got the tongues about three weeks later before I knew much about it - before attending a congregation. It was a surprise to me. These tongues were and are very detailed, nothing I could make up myself. Many different languages or dialects. I did abandon tongues at several points. One, fear that I was doing something wrong. Two, finally I got aggravated by the pride that was associated to "I speak in tongues" - which I must admit I had started to have myself. I have studied 1 Cor 14 (and prayed and waited) and have come to a peace about it. God loves us, He gives everyone different things and only He knows why. We all err in so many ways and He still loves us. So, if speaking in tongues was one of my mistakes, He knows me through and through. But, I have peace - plus I am stronger when I do pray in tongues. Much more to say, but that's some thoughts in a nutshell. :-) To me, speaking in tongues can become prideful, easily - and there are definitely false tongues in the crowds, probably more than genuine ones - but if I speak to my Father in my own privacy, it is just beautiful. He is our good, good Father. We will understand one future day.

I have been in countless churches where they have had "Holy Spirit Nights" with the goal of getting the gift of speaking in tongues. I have never seen a genuine expression of it. Grew up in AG, missionaries kid over seas for 10 years. Had to travel the country because my dad had to raise money for missions. Again, countless churches and I have probably seen thousands speaking in "tongues" and it was always hysterical and felt dark. I doubt anyone has actually seen a genuine expression of it.

The last epsode you did with this guy, you introduced him as from Transformation church, which is a heretical church with Mike Todd as its head pastor. I stopped listening bc of this. When I saw he was on again, I had to look it up and found out its a different transformation church. I think making that distinction is very important to the listeners assuming youre aware of Mike Todds church.

Hey Eric! I would challenge you to ponder if even he was from Mike Todd’s church, if the Holy Spirit could still use him. I don’t know that it’s necessary to shut off your heart towards anyone because of a church they belong to, rather I think the healthiest thing to do is ask God for discernment to pick out what He has for you from any preacher no matter where they are from and what people say about them.

@@brandonmerlino3488 I understand where youre coming from and agree even false teachers can offer good advice sometimes or God can work whatever situation for good, but at the same time, I think its very important to speak out against such teachers and warn others. We're also called as Christians to not even break bread with someone who openly and unrepentantly sins. Mike Todd is absolutely a false teacher and cares more about how his hair looks and likes on RU-vid than spreading the Gospel in an accurate way. If this man were working for Mike Todd, I would want nothing to do with him. We shouldnt actively go out of our way to listen to someone who associates with a known liar who has zero biblical qualifications for being a pastor. Reguardless of what God could do with that information to change someones lives, we are to follow and listen to pastors and teachers that have the fruits of the spirit and who are full of dicernment and integrity. So I get your point, but I truely believe if anyone works for bethel, hillsong, transformation, or elevation (all known problematic churches) we should avoid them at all cost.

Great episode 👏 There are many gifts, but its the same Spirit. Gods currency in heaven is faith; so we recieve not, because we believe not. The Holy Ghost gives gives according to the measure of our faith and desire in seeking a gift. I dont think there is a devine pre set gifting that the Lord gives up when we are born; thatd be silly.

I’m a person that grew up Pentecostal. I’ve been speaking in tongues since the age of 9 (now 36)and it’s so normal/second nature to me. But now I attend non denom church that doesn’t really approve of it. So I’ve been trying to get answers or understand more about speaking in tongues. But honestly, please don’t take offense to this… this pod left me more confused. 🫠 I’m just seeking and praying that the Lord gives me a revelation about it.
