I come from a Pentecostal background and I to had this “gift of tongues” but one thing that would always bother me was that everything that I was taught about it and experienced I couldn’t find biblical support for it. I often questioned other people about it but they would scare me and say don’t speak against the Holy Spirit! As a Pentecostal I was very confused about my faith and nothing made sense to me. I was told that I am trying to figure God out and I should stop because I will get lost. But one day I realized that God is sovereign and that lead me to reformed theology. And that’s when I finally found answers to all my questions and confusion I was having. My faith now is much more sober and my mind is not confused like it used to be. And yes I stopped praying in tongues and I pray in Russian and English and I get a lot more filled in the Holy Spirit then I did when I prayed in gibberish. Sadly many of my Pentecostal friends are ignorant and don’t want to even look at the history of Pentecostals and they ignorantly bash cessationist accusing them that they deny the Holy Spirit. It’s ridiculous. But praise God for leading me out of all this confusion and I experience the Holy Spirit in a much more intimate way then I did before.

According to the scriptural Law Of Repetition, the Word will repeat an event or something said three times to: 1) To direct our attention to an important spiritual truth. 2) To set a precedent to where the same circumstances need not be repeated in as much detail each time it occurs elsewhere in scripture. In Acts ch.2 When the believers recieved the Holy Spirit and began speaking in " tongues" three times the men in the crowd enquired of each other how they were hearing the believers speaking in their native languages. The reason for the threefold repetition was to alert us to the fact that the miracle occurring was that those in the crowd were hearing what the believers were saying in their native languages not that the believers were speaking them. This was an example of a sign for unbelievers, the men in the crowd. Paul describes the language the believers were speaking as the " unknown" tongue "that no man knoweth..( 1Cor.14:2). If this is a language no man knows then it's not a language native to this world. I believe that the Word " tongues" is pluralized in scripture is because more that one believer was speaking in one spiritual language.

The scriptural support for the necessity of speaking in tongues as confirmation that a believer has recieved the Holy Spirit is found in Acts ch 2,10,and ch.19. In each circumstance the first thing that happened when believers recieved the Holy Spirit is that they spoke in tongues. Three repetitions of an event or something said in scripture is important. The purpose of it is: 1) To direct our attention to an important spiritual truth. 2) To set a precedent to where the same occurence need not be repeated in as much detail elsewhere in scripture that it is mentioned.

See the comment posted just before yours. If you are not able to understand the reality of the truth from that post, you could be hopeless. Nonetheless, that man Costi is clearly a false teacher. The problem with what people refer to as the "church" today, is that it's counterfeit, just as Christ has declared: "Let the tares grow with the wheat" Maybe you do have a genuine gift of tongues, and maybe you don't. What I do know, is that a true gift of tongues is not something we choose to utilize as we see fit, like all gifts of the Holy Spirit, it is Him Who activates the gift. What is important to understand though, is that this specific gift is intended to be active on behalf of others, as well as our own self, as the text reveals. This gift also strengthens us Spiritually, assisting us to be kept from evil and remain in alignment with the will of God. The answers are all there in the Holy Bible, we first and always need to ask JESUS to assist us to understand properly, to silêncio the voices of anti-Christ spirits, and bless us with whatever knowledge and revelation we are meant to obtain through what is found in the Holy Bible. I pray a similar prayer everyday before I read the Holy Bible. A late merry Christmas to you and a happy 2024😇🙌 Cheers❣️

I grew up in the charismatic church and I get the frustration over false Doctrine even to the point that I've found myself angry at times however this is not true this is not what tongues is. I love your channel Mike winger but you are also wrong on the tongues issue which makes me think your potentially wrong on some other issues. I would love to have a conversation about it that won't last more than about 15 minutes if you're willing. Remember I grew up in this and the Lord saved me at 42 years old. I then went on a quest of un brainwashing. So I don't defend charismatics unless I have done my research and much prayer and let the Lord help me to understand his agape word. Again this criticism of tongues is understandable but still untrue.

I grew up in a non-denominational Pentecost church. We had Holy Ghost class on Tuesday, tarried for the endowment of the Holy Spirit, and basically forced to utter a heavenly language. Thank God for deliverance and studying His Word for myself. The occurrences of speaking in tongues in the Book of Acts: Acts 2 (the disciples - tongues), 10 (Cornelius and his household - tongues) & 19 - disciples of John the Baptist - tongues and prophesied). All 3 occurrences were a sign at the fulfillment of God's promise to "gospel to the end of the world". Those 3 occurrences of "speaking in tongues" were a sign to: Unbelieving Jews about the fulfillment of the Messiah (i.e. I Corinthians 1:22 "For the Jews require a sign..."; I Corinthians 14: 21-22 states that the Jews did not listen to God in their native language; they will have no choice to listen to God in a foreign language when their adversaries overtake them) :Jewish Christians that were resistant to "outsiders" aka Gentiles to build one church body (Acts 10:44-47, as A SIGN to the converted Jews to believe God can save anyone with the same Jesus and baptized with the same Holy Spirit, the Gentile believers (at Cornelius' house) spoke in diver tongues upon the acceptance of Jesus Christ!) :To all who heard the Messiah was coming by John the Baptist ministry (baptized under John's ministry, but not knowing the fullness of Christ (Acts 18:24-25) until elders explained Christ (Acts 18: 26-28)). However, the 3000 souls (Acts 2:42), 5000 souls (Acts 4:4) the multitude of men and women added daily (Acts 5:14), the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8:34-36), Lydia and her household (Acts 16: 14-15), the prison keeper and his household (Acts 16: 30-33), the Samaritans (Acts 8:12-17), Crispus and his household (Acts 18:8), a great example of people brought to the Lord (Acts 11:24), the Athenians on Mars Hill (Acts 17: 32-34), THEY ALL BELIEVED THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST and DID NOT SPEAK IN TONGUES AT SALVATION nor any recording of them speaking in tongues later. *Luke, the physician, recorded the history of Acts. Most physicians are meticulous. Why would a meticulous writer omit "tongues" from great display of salvation?*

There is a difference between speaking in tongues as the first sign that a believer has recieved the Holy Spirit and their private prayer language and the gift of speaking in tongues accompanies by the gift of interpretation. Speaking in tongues is the same spiritual language, but a different operation. The gifts believers recieves because God gives this one and other gifts to the whom He chooses to. Not everyone has the gift, but everyone speaks in tongues as the first sign that they have recieved the Holy Spirit.( Acts ch.2,10,and ch.19). The Holy Spirit baptism is how the Holy Spirit is recieved. There is no other sign given in scripture that a person has recieved the Holy Spirit when they recieve ,but the speaking in tongues.

Having been raised conservative Presbyterian; I really tried to attend a Pentecostal church; went for a few months and had to stop. I love those people but I don’t know if what they are doing is from the Spirit; they rarely study scripture; and while having corporate prayer, it is very very disruptive to have a room full of people’babbling’. The Bible does have specific teachings on not just ‘babbling’ to be seen. I pray for myself for God’s forgiveness in my feelings about this and for them, because I am sure they think they are being obedient.

However, I am somewhat discouraged by Brother Washer's mockery of people who participate in this deception, since it is a deception, and is perhaps more often perpetrated against those who practice such behavior, more so that people who desire to foist such falsehoods onto others. Send me a link to video of Paul Washer “mocking” people. I haven’t heard him ever mock anybody. He even said one time that he would rather be in prison in the time of persecution with a Pentecostal who’s theology is off but has a passion and a love for God then with a person who is reformed who is filled up intellectually but has no passion or zeal for God. I have to disagree with Paul Washer as a mean spirited person. I actually met him once and he had the most gentlest humble vibe that he gave off.. and I also sensed a lot of pain in his eyes because of what Christianity has become and all the young people are going into all these movements. I am part of a Pentecostal church, even though I don’t speak in tongues or seek after all these gifts like I used to. But after studying scripture and listening to men like Paul Washer who actually preach what the word says, not no extra biblical nonsense like many in my church say they would hear voices, see visions, receive prophecy and they talk about it like it’s should be accepted as a word of God just because they “felt” it was from the Spirit, no thank you.. so in defense of Paul Washer he is actually a very nice man, it’s just he preaches a lot of harsh messages because it’s needed and honestly if it wasn’t for his “mean” messages l would still be blindly following all this these things and getting into more confusion then sober faith that is firmly based on the word of God.

Thank you for bringing more clarity to this topic. I’ve been in churches where the teaching flows from a heavy emphasis on the baptism of the Holy Spirit. I’ve been told it’s questionable whether someone is baptized in the Spirit if they don’t speak in tongues, that we need tongues to have power, etc, the whole gamut. I have often felt like the oddball out because I always felt something was off about all this, and also because I would genuinely pray that I would “receive” this gift, and nothing would happen. I have some genuine, loving, wise people in my life, who pray in tongues, which would usually sound like utterances of the same syllables repeated. That confused me- not just because it never sounded like a language to me, but also because they were so theologically strong in other areas, and so much more seasoned in the Lord. I’ve been told I just need to study it more myself, but that frustrated me too, because I realized people study this and come to all different interpretations- and there’s only one truth about it. I like that you said people can be theologically strong in some areas, but not so much in others. I certainly don’t have all the answers, but I’m learning how to disagree in love. I think it scared me too because I’ve been really hurt by people in the past, and I want to be able to trust the people I’m close with. But I understand people can be misled in an area even if they’ve been in the Word for many years and it doesn’t mean they don’t love the Lord.

@redeemed, you are not alone. I'm in the exact situation you just described. I don't know if it's only me, but when they are praying in tongues, it can be really destructive. @@chanb2958 sorry to hear that! I hope you can find something a little more grounded. Thankfully now I’m not in a church where this is heavily taught- the pastor has said he believes in it, but he doesn’t push it by any means. I encounter it more now in personal Bible studies (I’m friends with, and do studies with women from a few different churches), and at friends’ churches when I go visit. But yeah it’s super distracting! I find myself not able to focus on what’s actually being prayed because I’m skeptical about what’s going on, and I wish we could all just pray in English and not pray in “tongues” over the person praying. I also don’t like the idea that people who I really trust might be deceived.. because it makes me wonder, is there something else they could be deceived about that they’re influencing me in? I know I need to trust the Lord over man, I’ve just been hurt a lot by folks in the church so it kinda freaks me out, even if they’re not intentionally trying to do anything. I just want to know what the truth is about tongues and all the “gifts” in general. 😞

Though speaking in tongues is biblical we need to remember it's just a gift given to edify the church or the person itself. I had prayed and fasted for many years but God never gave me the gift of speaking in tongues. Initially I felt unloved and isolated from those who did speak in tongues and the more I studied the Word I realised Jesus is coming for th fruit nd not the gifts! I began working on the qualities of the fruit of the Holy Spirit and grown closer with Jesus ever since. I have seen the people speaking in tongues backbite, being jealous and carnal while I am growing in this area to be self controlled with the help of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God. Yeah, but when you read the book of Acts, apostles were sent when the Holy Spirit wasn't manifest at the new birth. It was never intended to be a second outpouring. If you are spiritually and intellectually honest look up the meanings for the word "receive" in contact of the Holy Spirit. Also note grammatically that tongues is called a manifestation of the Spirit, not a gift. Follow the Greek grammar. When I speak in tongues it's always a language. I don't repeat it. Just because there are counterfeits doesn't mean the genuine isn't real. Tongues of angels are languages known to God and the angels. Interpretation is a manifestation of the Spirit, not something one can do with his mind. Look up the specific meaning of Greek word for speak in 1 Corinthians 12 through 14. Tho Holy Spirit is meant to be manifested. Sure, you don't have to speak in tongues to be saved, but not using the gift of the Holy Spirit [ones own new inner spiritual man - the Holy of Holies wherein the Godhead resides and fellowships with us] is the failure to use the "talents” God gave you. What was the context of not all speaking in tongues in 1 Corinthians? In the Church. Paul, by the Spirit, said he wished every one would speak in tongues - just limited at church to keep things decent and in order. The primary purpose of speaking in tongues is to pray in the Spirit in one's private prayer life. Many of today's churches either twist the scriptures by failure to rightly divide the word of truth, or ignore them entirely. Twisting the scriptures can be done intentionally, but it also happens through ignorance of how to study the Bible, through lack of proper reference for God's words, through lack of humility [this includes presumption], and through the failure to test all things as God commanded in 1 Thessalonians 5:21. People fail to test all things either out of ignorance on how to test them or through misplaced trust in one's teachers/denominational teachings. The repetitive nonsense isn't biblical. But what Costi is teaching here is twisted, not rightly divided. I pray that he reads this or runs into someone who can teach this topic well to him. I don't doubt his sincerity, as there are those who sincerely preach distortions of the truth. Folks, we can ill afford to be spiritually slothful. While this isn't a salvation issue, eternal rewards are at stake. And Costi is teaching error here. Teachers are held to a higher standard. This comment is not intended for doctrinal argument. It is an admonition to study the Bible diligently, laying aside your presuppositions and letting GOD speak. You'll need to be experienced at grammar, to use an interlinear and concordances and lexicons. These are all available online. Pray and ask God's assistance, and be willing to learn something that may be contrary to what you have been taught. Humility is required. Presumptuous attitudes will not lead to truth. Counterfeits do not negate the truths in the Word of God.
@James-li8cm
@James-li8cm 4 месяца назад
attitude does have a lot to do with it... doesn't quite negate the "gifts of the spirit", but rather the purpose of them. pride is a nasty thing and it creeps in real easily its easy to get to a "I have something you don't" mentality... which is NOT the spirit of Christ
@juliethompson2903
@juliethompson2903 4 месяца назад
@@James-li8cm We are supposed to clothe ourselves with humility. Pride is a nasty thing. Everything we do must be done with agape. That's why 1 Corinthians 13 is placed between 12 and 14. Wouldn't you know that it says love doesn't vaunt itself? The Corinthians were misusing spiritual gifts and were practicing error in other categories, heading in the direction of hypergrace. They needed reproof. God's way is always what I would call the alt middle. It's usually a bit foreign to our natural inclinations. We either get prideful and presumptuous and go overboard on the side of grace, like the Corinthians did, or we get fearful and overly cautious to the point of religiosity and doctrinal error that exceeds God's will for us like the Galatians did. We must walk in grace in accordance with the truth as we humbly are led by the Spirit of the living God who is Love. This is true freedom. It has standards - it isn't self-willed anarchy, but it also isn't slavish devotion to a set of rules in pursuit of our own righteousness. The Corinthians boasted of their lack of standards and their "spirituality." The Galatians were being led to boast and rely upon adherence to parts of the Law that applied to a covenant they were not party to. I think it's interesting how licence and legalism each have their appeal to pride. The flesh is prone to be prideful. The alt middle is above these, not on the plane of pride. I see it as the apex of a triangle, not a middle point on a line. God's ways are higher than ours. Have a blessed day!

It is seldom repetitive and just seems to flow without conscious thought. The result is peace and assurance that my heart’s prayer has been accepted and blessed. I believe this to have been Paul’s experience as well - private edification of Jesus in the Spirit leading to Spiritual power. For me, clear answers often follow this ‘praying in the Spirit’ and my heart says “Amen, thank you Jesus!” Let’s remember that scripture is clear not to forbid speaking in tongues.

Like all gifts but that he can so easily assume that because he led a life of deception and pretense then the experience of all others is mindboggling. Find it really upsetting so despite his sincerity he is STILL misleading others in whole other way.

@williamanthony: who said you could violate scripture and then claim it's from God? You have broken all the rules that Paul laid down, and then you say it's from God? You have fallen into the human trap of self righteousness. God NEVER accepts the human idea of tongue talking. Paul said that tongues would CEASE and they did; 2000 years ago. Definitely agree that tongues is a non-essential in the Christian walk. The Lord has loosened me up on that front. I grew up in a very healthy and orderly Pentecostal church where tongues and interpretation edified the congregation and was explained after the fact. I also pray in tongues in my personal prayer time. I wouldn’t say my mind is dormant, in fact, it’s often very active with images and people I’m praying for. Thank you for your word, Costi. Well said Steven. NT Wright, who also speaks in Tongues, has a wonderful explanation of some of this. I appreciate that Costi is willing to not paint us all as demon possessed or something like so many in that camp do. Costi is bringing up conversation that is useful even for those who are not convinced by his interpretation. I noticed a few notable missing passages and concepts that I'd love to see Costi address, but I'm confident after the abuse he's seen from family he's probably unable to see the function or a favorable interpretation of certain passages. Great work Costi, please keep putting out great content.

@@agabriela1 you’d believe you make power available and speak thing into existence in the realm of the spirit. You’d believe you make thing happen and speak to or command angels, you’d believe you edify yourself. It’s all about you, and what you can achieve in the spiritual realm. But God’s will isn’t to make power available on demand or speak things into existence, that’s a twisted interpretation of scripture. Be careful with that as New Agers also do that and have supernatural activities going on. Pagans can also speak in tongues. Tongues of the Bible were real languages given at Pentecost to give glory to God as a proof that God was now reaching out to the nations. And it can’t be a way to edify yourself as you edify yourself by studying scriptures and in communion with other believers. And as for commanding angels, that’s not our business, we are not to speak to them, and even so, in the Bible, any angels who came to visit spoke the normal language of the person, not a mysterious heavenly language. As for talking to God, he doesn’t need a secret language, he understand you wherever you are and in any language you speak, and he hears you in your secret place, in your closet and will reward you.

So I would agree that you can receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit without speaking in tongues, because that is what happened to me. I didn't even know what baptism in the HS meant, because I received what I called, more of God while worshipping and crying out for more of God in my mind. No one was speaking in tongues anywhere, but later in a sermon from a messianic jew, he shared that a Christian prayed for him when he was a jew. They spoke in tongues while praying. He asked the praying person where they learned hebrew and the person praying said, I don't speak hebrew. Yet the jew said that they spoke perfectly in hebrew and was praying a prayer he knew as a child. This was one of the reasons, he came to know Christ. Someday we will have a universal translator, where you speak and it will translate and tell you the language. There are so many languages.

Why would we seek after what Paul describes as the least of the gifts? He said to focus on love instead. He said "I show you a better way" This is why we rightly divide the word of truth. If we didn't then we should all be buolding arcs because God told Noah too, so why shouldn't we? Thanks so much brother Costi for that excellent exposition on tongues. As for Act 2 and 1 Corinthians 14, there is no scriptural support to show that they are different. Unknown tongues in 1Corinthians 14:2,4,14,27 has to be a language unknown to the one who speaks but definitely recognised by the one who hears. Thanks for dealing with this matter biblically and gently with the love of Christ. Blessed by your content. God bless. I'm on a journey.

You must have missed this part: 1 Corinthians 14:2 KJV For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. What Paul is saying is that if you will yield yourself to the Holy Spirit, he will give you the prayer as you pray to God in tongues for personal edification and then you will be asking God for what is 100% according to the will of God for you, that you didn't even know you needed, so that God can answer it for your benefit because we don't know how to pray as we ought, but ask amiss. This is not speaking to men, but to God and is indeed different than what the disciples were doing in witnessing to men. The Holy Spirit knows God's plan for your life and will intercede for you according to that plan, and God can then give you what you didn't even know to ask for on your own. Or you can deny that you need this and keep praying without his help.

I expect that many like me will be reluctant to stop praying in tongues, as it seems beneficial during private prayer-time. However, I am willing to relinquish whatever the Lord wants me to give up, especially if I have made it an idol or source of pride. May we all be led clearly in this. It is more important that I give people the clear Gospel of Jesus Christ, and that I help the many hurting, the lost, and the poor, and that we edify our brothers and sisters in the faith; to “pray always,” and then allow our Lord to decide how He will use us, not to mention we are going to need to be strengthened in these days. @kathyjames9240 Hi kathy. There is a lot more for you to learn and unlearn. I've been teaching for 37 years and I use the original languages. Tongues CEASED just like Paul said they would. That was 2000 years ago. You, and no one else has ever spoken in tongues. There ways never anything such as praying in tongues. That is NOT what tongues were for. You were breaking all the rules of tongue speaking, so how could it be from God? God will not violate his own word. I can teach you everything there is to know about tongues and the gifts. I'm afraid that Costi Hinn doesn't know that much about it. He speaks as if it still exists and it does not. Tongues were meant for ONE reason only. Paul explains it all but most people have no idea about where it is and what Paul was saying. It comes from the OLD testament; NOT the new. Paul said, "wherefore IN THE LAW'. That is the OLD testament. Tongues were Never a gift for the church. It says they were a SIGN TO the unbeliever. Now you have to find out, WHO THE unbeliever is. It's a very specific group of unbelievers and not unbelievers in general. Anyhow, I'd be glad to help you. You must however get rid of "religious speech" such as 'We then allow our Lord to decide." We don't "ALLOW" God to do anything. That is Charismatic chaos. So I hope the first thing you did was get OUT of charismatic churches. You will never learn what you need to know if you are still in their hands and God will not use you when there is so much wrong with the subject. Costi is not a teacher. He is passing along his experiences, but that doesn't make it sound doctrine. I hope to hear from you and that you will want to learn the truth.

Romans 8:26 is true, however it does not negate 1 Cor 14:2 (rather, it is complimentary) there are hidden "mysteries" in scripture and 1 Cor 14:2 is one of those which gives credibility to the "gift of tongues" being a "thing", otherwise its not just someone speaking Spanish without knowing it to someone who understands Spanish... rather scripture lays it out to be something that "edifies self and not the church" is a "sign to the unbeliever" and "is a way to pray to God without understanding"

Did I know about this? No I didn't. Of course, I recived a biblical teaching about the Holy Spirit.... It's almost 40 years now and I'm still speaking in tounges, Praise God🙏 Yes I know, in these days not all that says, this is from the Lord is that. ‘Tongues’ (read, *‘languages’* ) - the divine gift, is the God given ability to effortlessly learn to speak and be understood through real-language barriers. It is not xenoglossy (the ability to speak a language you've never had any prior contact with), nor is it the self-created non-cognitive non-language utterance of modern tongues-speech. Yes, agreed. 1Cor. 14:2 is perhaps *the* quintessential verse used by many to “evidence” modern tongues-speech in the Bible. The whole passage is talking about real, rational language. Using an analogy - If I attend a worship service in “East Haystack”, some remote town in the US out in the middle of nowhere, two things are going to be evident: one; there’s only going to be so many people at that service (i.e. there will be a finite given amount of people there) and two; the chances that anyone speaks anything *but* English is pretty slim to nil. If I start praying aloud in say Lithuanian, there’s no one at that service that’s going to understand a single word I’m saying. Even though I’m speaking a real language, no one _there_ will understand my “tongue”. That does not mean or imply that no one else understands Lithuanian; just no one at _that particular service._ In this sense, therefore, I am speaking _only to God,_ since he understands all languages. To everyone at the service, even though I’m praying in the Spirit (defined below), to the people listening to me, I’m still speaking “mysteries” - i.e. even though I’m praying as I ought, no one understands me. It's just an idiomatic expression to say that no one has a clue what I’m saying as no one speaks my language. When one looks at the original Greek, the verb which is usually translated as “understandeth/understands” is actually the verb “to hear” in the sense of understanding what you’re hearing someone say. The verb is *not* “to understand”. That part of the verse is more properly “no one hears [him] with understanding”, i.e. no one listening to him understands what he’s saying. There is _nothing_ in this passage that suggests modern tongues-speech nor is there anything that even _remotely_ suggests that the speaker does not understand what he himself is saying. The Greek bears this out; it is the _listeners_ who do not understand, *not* the speaker - no matter how hard modern tongues-speakers want the speaker to also not understand…….unless the author of the text is a bad grammarian, it just isn’t there.

In first Corinthians 14 :2-4 it says, “for if you have the ability to speak in tongues, you’ll be talking only to God since people won’t be able to understand you you will be speaking by the power of the spirit, but it will be mysterious. But one who prophesies strengthens, others encourages them and comforts them ,a person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally.” Paul goes on to say “ I wish you could all speak in tongues “ Yes, there are different types of tongues , but Paul is addressing the church… we are currently in the church age, we are the body of Christ! Every single tool that God provides to strengthen our spiritual walk is necessary! Obviously, we can choose to take this view , Costi , but by teaching this, it’s almost like cutting off peoples arms… teaching them that they don’t need some thing that can edify them ,and help them to walk in a way that would bring strength to their spiritual self. God gives us these gifts to build our faith , as we partner with Him to bring others into the kingdom. Just because we have experiences in life that do not line up with the word of God… does not change what the word of God says. Our past experiences do not determine or shape what the word of God clearly says. No matter what doctrine of interpretation fits our “ comfort”. Paul gives us guidelines and parameters on how to use this gift in the church. He also encourages us to use this gift in our private prayer time to build our faith! Please examine more closely before making a determination on this. God is a good gift giver, and knows exactly what his children need!

The problem is that you cut off half the verse, and you forget the intent of Paul writing the letter to the Corinthians. The Corinthian church wasn't good, they were doing a lot of bad stuff, and Paul was rebuking a lot of their behavior, including the reckless, power seeking "tongue speakers". But again, I find it odd that you cut off half the verse. Paul wasn't saying "I wish you could all speak in tongues. The end." So if you read the actual verse, you KNOW that's not the point he's making here. The idea that tongues is a nonsense gibberish follows kundalini eastern mysticism practices. If somebody who worships satan can do it, and you do it too, then why are you saying that gift is from the Holy Spirit?

I also felt led to ENCOURAGE every believer to go back to the Lord and ask him. Personally, when I did this-- and I mean TRULY asked day after day with an open heart -- HE lifted the veil from my eyes and clarified some of my OWN misconceptions. But based on my journey with the Lord, SOME of the things presented in this video were confirmed for me. And other things were NOT. It is not my place to judge anyone's beliefs. I just encourage everyone, ESPECIALLY those who are "100%" sure THEY are right, to just double check with Jesus. He is our Shepherd. And a wonderful, patient teacher. He will show you the way IF you soften your heart, humble yourself, and truly want to learn. @isaacwarren: Isaac (laughter), If you would like to learn from a real teacher, I'd be glad to help. I've taught for 37 years and I use the original languages to explain things to people who have a hard time following everything. It is a HUGE subject and takes time to learn it all. The things that you were taught, were not even close to the truth. I pray you come out of it and learn what the bible really says. Costi Hinn does not know much about the gifts and especially tongues. He is a brother, but Tongues do not exist and I can prove it in one verse. There are many passages that teach this fact. Indeed: Sola Scriptura. So what does the word of God say? Get back to me and we can go over it. Paul said that Tongues would CEASE and they did: 2000 years ago.

@@pjfunnybunny2597 Hi. Well it's good to research it but how about being taught the verse? By the way, it is not a belief. It's simply bible fact. No one can dispute the facts. It's Mark 16:20 I bet you have read it before, but it just didn't dawn on you as to what it is saying. Just remember the fact that there are TWO sets of gifts. The SIGN gifts are listed in Mark 16:17-20. Paul said that tongues were for a SIGN. Therefore all of the gifts listed in Mark are SIGN gifts. Now find out what those gifts were for in verse 20. It clearly says that the Lord sent THEM OUT, CONFIRMING THE WORD, WITH SIGNS FOLLOWING. Jesus sent THEM out and no one else. It's called Apostolic Authority. The signs that followed proved that they were from God, and not false teachers. The word in Greek for "Followed" means ALONG SIDE OF. It's not saying, behind them. When the apostles spoke, one of the sign gifts would happen, to confirm what they said. In Acts 11 it says that While Peter was yet speaking..... The Gentiles were the ones who spoke but that was because the authority of Peter was already given. In each of the four examples given in Acts, an apostle had to be there. It was 3 times for Peter. One of those was with John and the fourth one was with Paul. Therefore God's word could not be confirmed unless an apostle was there. The point is that God's word HAS BEEN CONFIRMED. It's called the Bible. It is finished. Therefore by the time the apostles died, ALL scripture had to be delivered from God. That means that ALL of the sign gifts are gone. Read ACTS 1:2 It says when Jesus gave THEM ORDERS..... those orders are Mark 16: 17-20. Under no circumstances were ORDERS given to people who are NOT THERE. Understand? Therefore it is not for just anyone to be doing those signs. There were only 11 disciples in Mark. Judas was dead. Therefore Peter had to ask God to show him who the 12th person would be. Even Peter knew that there had to be a limit as to how many people were able to do these signs. The job went to Matthias. Here's more proof: In Acts 8 with Philip in Samaria. WHY did Philip call for Peter and John, if Philip could do the real signs? It's because of Apostolic Authority. Not one word of what Philip said was recorded in scripture to confirm God's word. It only says what Philip DID. Let's get back to the word being confirmed: Read Revelations 19:10. The spirit of, or the purpose of, prophecy IS the TESTIMONY of Jesus. The testimony of Jesus is THE BIBLE. It is finished. What did Jesus say to the disciples about when the Spirit came? He said, When He comes, He will TESTIFY OF ME. That "Testimony" is the Bible. It is finished. No more signs and no more apostles. ALL of this comes from Mark 16:20. And there is much more. Hebrews 2:3-4 says the same thing, even in more detail in the Greek than Mark 16. If you wish, I will teach you what it says and means. Until then, Happy Reading.

@@pjfunnybunny2597 I will re-print a message that I generally made to everyone on topic. It's meant for people like you, to learn from and defend yourself against false teachers. Everybody pay attention: Mark 16:20. ALL of the sign gifts were for the apostles for confirming the word of God. THAT "word" has been confirmed. It's called THE BIBLE. The word for, WORD, in the Greek, is LOGOS. It means specifically THE GODLY MESSAGE. It is not putting words to form sentences as I am doing now. Therefore by the time the apostles died, scripture was finished and all the signs ceased; especially tongues which ceased 25 years before John died. Anyone who believes the sign gifts are still here, is saying that God is adding new revelation. THAT IS HERESY. Anyone's personal experiences are no way to validate scripture. God warns you not to use them or emotions. They are not founded on truth. Tongues do not exist because they CEASED just like Paul said they would. They came from the OLD testament and the purpose for tongues never changed. There is only ONE verse that tells us what tongues were for, and to whom they were for, and why. Paul quotes it and says, "IN THE LAW". That is the Old testament. He quotes Isaiah 28:11. The purpose of tongues, earthly languages, were a condemnation sign against Israel for following after Pagan cultures and worshiping their gods and marrying into their cultures. God put them into captivity by the Assyrians. He did it again later through the Babylonians. Now Paul is warning the church that a third time was coming. IT WAS ROME. It's the WAR of 70 A.D. The Jews were scattered as James 1:1 says, and the purpose of tongues was fulfilled. They CEASED. Paul said that tongues were for a sign. Therefore every gift listed in Mark 16:17-18 are SIGN gifts. They not only confirmed God's spoken message through the apostles, but it proved that the apostles were from God, and not false teachers. Verse 14 says that Jesus rebuked the disciples for THEIR hardness of heart AND UNBELIEF. THEY were the unbelievers, that Jesus was talking about. Simple English. "Those that believe" are NOT common believers. Did YOU ever write scripture? Did YOU ever confirm the spoken word of God out of your own mouth? Did YOU ever drink something deadly or get bitten by a deadly snake with no harm whatsoever? So read Acts 1:2. Jesus gave ORDERS to the disciples. Under no circumstances is he giving Orders to people who are not there. Therefore it is NOT to common believers throughout time. Jesus told his disciples that if THEY asked for anything, he would do it for them. In English, it is called, Second person plural. Simple English. It is not to everyone to do what Jesus did. The apostles carried on with delivering God's message about his son. Hebrews 1:1-2. It does not say, the last days. The Greek is, The last of THESE days. It's the days in which God was speaking his word through his son, Jesus. The book of Revelation is the last book and it is the revelation of WHO Jesus is. Therefore anyone who thinks the sign gifts are still around, is saying that God is adding to his word. Where then are the books after God's confirmed message? They don't exist. Revelation 19:10. The Spirit, or purpose, of prophecy is the TESTIMONY OF JESUS. That's the Bible. Jesus said, " When the Spirit comes, he will testify of Me." That's the bible. Prophets don't exist. They are lying, self centered, self righteous frauds. The word of God is finished. We are to live by EVERY WORD that proceeds out of the mouth of God. We can not live by "every word" unless we HAVE every word. That's the Bible. STUDY to show yourself approved unto God.... Rightly dividing the word of truth. The Greek words for, "rightly dividing', are, CUT IT STRAIGHT. Grow in the grace AND knowledge of our Lord. So pjfunnybunny: there's a little more reading for you to do and research to do. I've barely touched the surface. If you want more, just let me know.

@@toolegittoquit_001 I don't think you understand the term "cessationism." Cessationism is not a qualified objection to current practices. I think charismatics would agree with you: It's fine if you get it right. Also, I wouldn't say it is a reasonable response, either. Cessationists do a little extra-Scriptural extrapolation to claim these gifts were only for the first century Christians. I didn't see a reference to a clock ticking for these gifts in Scripture. Cessationists want to impose one. They are adding to Scripture. That is dangerous.

The question of “needing an interpreter” is in the Corinthian church where people spoke in mass, and it appeared “irrational” to those around, including the other believers - you can read it yourself in 1 corinthians 14. What does it tell us? - speaking in tongues was done in the early church - it seemed irrational to others So, Paul taught them to speak in tongues in church only if there is an interpretation. The question was purely about order in worship. What does costi do here? - he says tongues always need interpreter, which is not biblical in any way - he says tongues are human languages only , again - not biblical. There are quite a few references where tongues of angels and heavenly tongues are mentioned, including a close reading of 1 Corinthian’s 13,14 - he is pushing to making everyone doubt about tongues itself.. which is the most dangerous part. I normally do not try to argue, but this sort of teaching is robbing the church of its power. Be careful brother - the gifts of the spirit are real, and they are very much available to those who seek earnestly for it.

railwayjade: If you are still looking for answers; I've got them. I've been teaching for 37 years with the original languages. Tongues do not exist. Paul said they would CEASE and they did; 2000 years ago. That verse your mother was trying to use, is a contradiction of scripture; therefore it is WRONG. She is NOT reading the context and she is not reading the rest of the verses. Paul says "let ALL things be done for the edification of the church." Therefore... self edification IS WRONG. Paul and God, DEMAND that the message that came from tongues, MUST BE UNDERSTOOD BY MEN. Ask yourself this..... How can it be in private when Paul says, "Let it be by two and no more than three"? Paul says, "TONGUES ARE FOR A SIGN". Again, how can it be in private? WHAT is the sign? A sign by itself is nothing. ASK: What does the sign POINT TO? LOOK close to that verse again. It says, "He who speaks in A TONGUE". THE TITLE OF THE GIFT IS "SPEAKING IN TONGUES" PLURAL. NOT SINGULAR. Speaking to God in this manner IS FALSE. The bible says, that it is by the Spirit who gives the utterance. NOT US. Therefore the Spirit can not violate his own word. Look at the verse again. It says, "For no one understands him". This is why Paul is saying it is WRONG to speak like that. God demands that the message be understood by men. Read the rest of the verses about the example Paul gives, about the instrument. The trumpet. It has NO LIFE in it and yet it is smarter than those people who are babbling. The bible says that the trumpet MUST MAKE A DISTINCT SOUND. That means it MUST BE UNDERSTOOD. If it is NOT understood, then how is the ARMY going to know what to do when it hears the trumpet? So your mother is in grave contradiction of verses. WOMEN were never allowed to speak. WHY does she claim to do it? Her "teachers" are false and they have lied to her. Show me one woman that ever spoke in tongues. Show me one woman that ever confirmed God's WORD by showing signs. READ Mark 16:20. Show me one woman that EVER wrote scripture. All of the Sign gifts listed in Mark 16:17-18 ARE SIGN GIFTS. Paul said that tongues were for a Sign. Therefore ALL of those gifts listed ARE SIGN GIFTS. They were for CONFIRMING THE WORD OF GOD. The WORD of God HAS BEEN CONFIRMED. IT'S THE BIBLE. I hope this reaches you, and you respond.

@carrielynng328: HI I doubt if Mr. Hinn will ever get back to you but I can help you. I've taught for 37 years and I use the original languages to help people like you to understand what is being said. So here's your answer. Look at what you said. You wrote: "that was ALL on ASKING for tongues". Number 1. You can NOT ask for a gift. The holy spirit gives the gifts "AS HE WILLS". It has nothing to do with asking. You can't ask. Number 2. Your brain was already set on what you have heard in church and you were told to do it. That was totally against scripture. If you had not been told what to do, or how to do it, you would have done NOTHING. God will not violate his own word. God will NOT CAUSE YOU to violate his word. You did it on your own because you were told to do it. And before you start to worry, Satan, had NOTHING to do with it. Most people are forced to do things and they are told that if they don't, then they are not a believer and don't have the holy spirit. ABSOLUTE HERESY. I really liked the way that you were asking about what to do. That tells me that you have a heart for God and his word. Yes you need to renounce it but how about if I teach you all about gifts first and then you can "renounce it' with a full heart and understanding? Paul said, tongues would CEASE and they did: 2000 years ago. I can prove to you that the sign gifts have ceased, in ONE verse. I have spoken more on this subject, than anything else. Just a question and would love your input since I’m not extremely well learnt when it comes to theology. When Paul spoke about tongues needing to be interpreted, didn’t he mean that it needs to be interpreted if it is meant for the edification of the church, but the gift of tongues is mainly for the edification of oneself anf therefore needs no interpretaion. If it is for the edification of oneself, doesn’t that perhaps point to the fact that the “appstolic tongues”, if you will, were different to the gift of tongues, since it did not need to be interpreted (because it is a know language spoken specifically to people who understands the language), and was meant for the edification of the church and not the apostles themself. I am a charismatic christian so I might be slightly biased, however your video was very insightful while still being respectful which I definitely appreciated.

How often do you read the word of God? I would recommend reading it daily. And pray for understanding. Language is very fascinating. It changes over time. We stop using words or they start having different meanings. Like the word “gay” for example. Just like with that example, tongues was more commonly used as opposed to language. Sometimes still used as e.g “English is my native TONGUE”. So keep those things in mind when tackling scripture. Always seek out the context. Also search the term “glossolalie”. You will find that this happens not only with charismatic movements but also in…you wont believe it… other religions. Ask yourself the following questions: 1.does God share His glory with other religions? And what does the Bible teach about God’s character? 2. If this is from the Holy Spirit, wouldn’t every Christian denomination(those that don’t have pentecostal roots) speak this? Why would He discriminate? This was quite a lot but if you have any more questions feel free to ask. “Like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation-if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good” 1 peter 2: 2-3

Thank you, Costi. I am listening and learning. My husband and I grew up in tongue-speaking churches that taught that tongues are both a prayer language and a language for interpretation. It's hard to see Scripture through a different lens than that, in all honesty, but I want to know the truth. So, we continue to search and learn from Scripture. At times, it feels like everything we were ever taught (well, maybe not everything) is becoming unraveled, and therefore, we don't know what to believe. If the Bible doesn't mean what we've always been taught it means, how can we trust someone else to tell us what it means? What if their interpretation is wrong, as well? I feel quite discouraged. I didn't know there were so many different ways to look at Scripture until I became an adult in my 40's. Uhggg...

@SimpleQuietLife: You need to learn from real teachers. Costi is a brother but he does not know how to explain what "tongues" were and what they were for. I've been teaching for 37 years and I use the original languages to help explain things to people like you. I understand your frustration. Real teachers EXPLAIN things. They don't just make comments. Don't feel discouraged. Help is here. God only meant for the bible to be understood in ONE WAY; HIS WAY. It takes Translation and NOT interpretation. Yes you need to get out of your church because of all the lies being told. Yes it is EVERYTHING that you have been told. You need to take the time to study before ever trying to locate a real bible teaching church. You will never find one in the charismatic circles. GOD is NOT a denomination and Neither am I. Denominations divide people, and they are not in the bible. Not only can I prove that what you have heard is false, but I can prove that what I say is truth. Many people have trouble with the English, let alone the Greek. This is how they come up with all of the various readings of scripture. Scripture MUST match with other scripture and make sense. It can not contradict itself. Tongues do not exist. I can prove it by one simple verse. Paul said they would CEASE and they did; 2000 years ago. Paul explains it, but no one seems to want to read about it, because they don't understand it. Anyone violating the rules of tongue speaking is NOT following God's word, OR God himself. Since tongues don't exist, the rules do not exist anymore. It was NEVER for a prayer language. People use this as an excuse to get out of their own problem that they created. Nothing makes sense to you, because you have been lied to, and no lie is of the truth. Get back to me ASAP and I'd be glad to help you. I really hope to hear from you. I protect people so that they are not trapped by false teachers. They are easy to spot. It's the BAD teachers that you have to watch out for. No one can claim to be a teacher and show you the things that they have said, which is against scripture. You will finally be protected and understand what God was doing during the new testament. I will NEVER lead you to me or personal opinions. Everything will lead you to Christ and his word. God bless.

@SimploeQuietLife: WELL, I've been waiting for a response from you. I offered to teach you the truth. You claim that you want to know the truth and then don't answer me? What's the problem?
