This week we welcome scholar and author Matthew Thiessen to talk about his new book, A Jewish Paul: The Messiah's Herald to the Gentiles. Thiessen goes into the hotly contested realm of Pauline interpretation and discusses how deeply problematic (read: antisemitic) some of those interpretations can be.

I KNEW IT! As soon as you said his last name I KNEW he was Canadian! The Theisans are all related to the Klausens and Reimers of Manitoba!

I’m in the “Hate Paul” camp. I can say that now that I’ve deconverted; thought it a lot before then.

This podcast made me think of how problematic paul was. And his ghost writer(s), were equally (probably more problematic) as paul.

Christians love to quote from the non-authentic epistles AND 1 cor 15.

With Jacov it is about the law And followers of "the way" were supposed to test newcomers to see if they were steadfast. Because, to Yacov, if a person was chattering about their faith, but they weren't demonstrating their jewishness they would not be long in their belief. And so the Jewish law was important, even for gentile, AND they needed to demonstrate their additional faith in their way by helping the orphans and widows.

I loathe Paul and sincerely doubt anything will ever change that.

Hmmm, listening to this podcast, it made me think: perhaps Paul indulges in the parade of Gentile horribles in Romans because his real rhetorical aim is to see how insulting the "people who say they are Jews," i.e., pagans, are willing to get. Paul is seeing how willing they are to insult their own mamas and them. And this is because they are setting themselves up as better than other former pagans following Jesus and causing them to stumble. The problem isn't really how sinful Gentiles are. The problem Paul wants to check is the idea that the faith in Jesus that led these former pagans to repentance and to turn to Israel's God is not enough. So he's doing everything he can to shake their tree.

Why the letter for Hebrews were called that way ? Why not "Jews" ? What's the real difference between this two terms ?

Paul did not write the book of Hebrews.

It was probably named Hebrews hundreds of years after it was written. The name seems a bit ironic. The epistle (letter) was written mostly to Jewish Christians exhorting them to remain Christian and not return to their “Hebrew“ roots. Generally “Hebrew” is an older term. Most of the time in the Christian Bible, the ancestors of those we now call Jews were referred to as Judaeans - identified geographically. I know that doesn’t fully answer your question.

@@scienceexplains302 I'm aware it arises so many more questions but thanks to your response anyway ! I've heard it was the priests in exile which returned from Babylon who's first called themselves Jew. The population still on the land continued to call themselves Hebrews. This is why I wonder about the use made of these two terms. I wanted to know if someone else had some clues about this.

@@project.anubis 2 Kings 16:6, written during Exile or maybe even before, seems to be the earliest use of “Yehudi”, meaning Judaeans. Theistic beliefs were even more closely tied to geography then than they are today.

I your opinion, was Paul a good writer for his time?
