Having used an Arduino mega in some initial prototypes , interference causing the Arduino to hang was a persistent issue unless it was fully enclosed in a metal housing and any external connections used shielded cables. Being anywhere near a VFD for an induction motor meant issues were certain, for example. Great video thanks.

Error recovery might be possible using the 2560's watchdog timer.. if an operation takes too long, maybe halt interrupts and reset.. buuuut. I think the Arduino bootloader itself hogs the timer in some ways. I think a shiny metal box is called for, definitely.
@Sevalecan
@Sevalecan 3 года назад
My first question would be are we thinking conducted or radiated emissions? There's no VFD on this car and the electronics are primarily the arduino itself. The main culprit could be the ignition circuit in that case, I'm guessing. That's a high voltage switching situation which could generate large EMI spikes. Second, it didn't sound like the arduino rebooted. It sounded like the ignition jumped out of time(at least to me). But doesn't the crank wheel have a tooth that indicates 0 degrees? So maybe the processor did mess up. But I still wonder if a small radiated emission might've messed up timing somewhere. Faraday cages and shielded cables can do their job when used correctly, just seems excessive to say it's required. I would suggest making sure things like the ignition switching are separated and that the emission sources aren't right next to the arduino. But I could be wrong, maybe it is that sensitive. Not impressed if so. This of course all assumes the firmware on the Arduino has no issues with throughput and is not missing samples. Always a challenge doing real-time processing

For your speedometer, get a bicycle one! They sell them for like $12 at Walmart. You attach the magnet to the inside of the wheel, attach the sensor in the wheel well close enough for it to read it, enter the tire diameter in the computer and you get a speed that gets updated every revolution, instead of a choppy GPS signal!

The Arduino layout is notoriously prone to emi and transients. And a spark plug is noisy emi event. I'd put ferrites and shielding on everything, and maybe look into getting an industrial hardened version. Also maybe a resistor plug to limit noise.

Yeah, my homemade CNC is running off of the Arduino GRBL shield. It kept freaking out and destroying my projects randomly until I figured out it didn't like being around large brushless motors and the power supply. The problem finally stopped once I put the Arduino into a metal project box, attached it to an independent power supply and moved it from the SMPS. So I think it would be logical to make an aluminum enclosure, add ferrites and maybe even a voltage regulator for Arduino power. I'm not quite sure what's powering his Arduino right now, but they are rather sensitive to voltage.

I love the series, really look forward to new episodes. I dont mean to sound like a broken record, but the cvt is not efficiently giving you power on 3rd gear take-off. Its designed to handle something like the ratio of 2nd gear at most, with that much weight. That is why it undershifts (overrevs,) then overshifts (underrevs.) A bigger torque converter with a bigger diameter secondary could help greatly. Or just a standard or centrifugal clutch, with proper gearing. Sorry for the long winded reply, thanks for the great content!

Just an idea for the cvt. A stiffer spring can help kill that high end dip in power to come in a little bit later, and the guides on the rear pulley will help dictate how much of a drop in rpm can occur when the cvt is upshifting. A smoother angle can also help control the drop in rpms so you don't stay out the engines peak range.

@@X7rocks maybe on paper, but the secondary size is a huge factor. I've put alot of those torque converters on go-karts. Hands down the biggest performance improvement is choosing the right gearing. I've played with secondary springs and ramps. Also messed with primary engagement and weights. The only way to truly get them right is to not over-gear them. So if you wanna go 55 mph you will need a snowmobile sized torque converter. Then play with springs and helix ramps. EDIT: And primary weights/springs! It all needs to be tuned together! They make a comet 94c primary with a 1 inch shaft for 4-strokes. I would recommend an arctic cat secondary with a yellow or red spring. Get helix's 44 through 55 to play with.

Speeduino is going to be how I keep my car going when the ECU fails. But actually thinking about "upgrading" now since it already has issues.

I've got a built 460cc stroker with billet everything, it's originally was a 420cc engine. I would absolutely love to do an EFI setup.

(Volume per Rev of SC)* flywheel rpm: Volume per engine rev * FW rpm 1:1=1Bar You need a SC effeciency graph to dial it in.

Damn. This is such a good build. I am literally down to see any way you take this. It seems like supercharging is coming next, but if you wanna tweak that fuel map and change sprockets I am all for it. Weight reduction would be cool too. I have yet to see anyone measure the exact weight they took off of a car vs performance gain. Whatever man just keep them coming!!!

The car is pretty much stripped down. the only items that remain are essential for safety and some cosmetic items that keep the car normal looking.

Oh and here is a CRAZY idea: put a CVT between the engine and the supercharger for a self balancing ratio
@someguy2741

I have an idea. Often on performance videos there are idiots who get all worked up about ram air setups and how it will make 80 HP or whatever. On an engine that consumes all the air it is not much change but if you had a great big scoop... say across the whole front of the grill (i am thinking a big rubbermaid container with a hole cut into it to funnel it to the air intake). If you want to check it before committing much a pressure/vacuum gauge with the hose in the rubbermaid (with no holes) just to see how much pressure is possible at max speed without consuming any air. I think the magic of your experiment is the small displacement might make the dumbest internet or pre-internet power ideas plausible. I like the idea of those fake electric superchargers or the leafblower idea (maybe modify it so it doesnt "stall" under pressure but instead lets the leafblower motor stall). Perhaps even running it on RC car 15% or 30% nitromethane? Or pure methanol. Or Avgas. Or liquid propane. Or hydrogen. Or gasified wood... or gasified keurig cups (which are hilariously called recyclable). Or run on acetylene. Or misting waste oil into it. Maybe even of those atmosphere replacement air superchargers. Perhaps the next transplant idea could be a tiny diesel. If you do some googling of chinese "trikes". They use a diesel hit and miss engine on these ubiquitous farm wagons. With a diesel you could burn almost anything. The speeduino should be able to handle the control just with some creative circuitry to control an injector... maybe just run it by feeding into the intake? In non turbo configuration that should work.

Glad to see more progress on this project. I am looking at that Predator 420cc and seeing it used in this application I think I might be a bit scared. The flywheels and connection rods of the Predator engines have a bit of a history of not working so well outside of their stock engine performance (A polite way of saying they have a history of breaking when used under more performance. That more performance is a re-jet, heavier valve springs, and governor removal). I am not 100% sure if you have done this but I do hope you have upgraded the flywheel and connection rod of the engine. I have a copy of a dyno chart where someone changed the valve springs, re jetted the carb, changed the flywheel, changed the connection rod, and removed the governor. Peak Torque: 35.81 @ 2500 RPM. Peak horsepower: 20.50 @ 2350 RPM. Max RPM around 5500. The Flywheel and connection rod were changed because it was an improvement for engine survive-ability. At this point you might want to look into a new cam for the engine. If you are satisfied with the current performance curve of the engine (heavily leaning towards Torque) I say keep with what you got but if you want an engine with more mid or high RPM performance a new Cam might be necessary.

The engine we are currently using is 100% box stock except for the EFI. The governor no longer functions, however the EFI limits the RPM to 4400. For now we take a risk of destroying the engine while we sort out the EFI. Once we get the EFI sorted out we will build a second engine for the supercharger. The supercharged engine will be built with a billet rod, stainless steel valves with stiffer springs. Unfortunately a billet flywheel cannot be used on our application because in previous experiments we found the cooling fins machined on the flywheel do not provide enough air flow to cool the engine with a prolonged full load. In this episode we mention that we will be switching to a different sprocket to get the engine back into its power band. In other words we want to keep the engine at 4000-4200 RPM with the supercharger. I really want to do something with the camshaft, but I'm not certain there is a good grind available for the hemi head version of the 420 engine... of course the cam would be for the supercharged engine.

The Arudino crashing is likely EMI from the ignition, etc. Shielding (= metal housing), ferrite cores on I/O cables and some filtering on the incoming power should fix that.

I would make the supacharger spin at 70% of its rated speed at max engine rpm. But a small turbo would definitely rob less power.
