I grew up on the ct/ma boarder ten minutes from Springfield off i91. I knew possibly some associates of the western ma mafia cell. My best friends’ family. Very kind people and fun people. Family oriented. Everyone knew of the mafia’s presence. It was rumored Franks’s firehouse pizza whose owner burned his restaurant down twice. Everyone thought he did it. In fact his second restaurant, the town put like 30 water hydrants around it lol. Springfield Family was mostly none violent, and had a ton of legitimate businesses doing legitimate things. It was more of a fraternity. I feel like they’re goal was to make legitimate businesses that did real business, teach their kids the business, have them get mbas and pass it on. Basically the goal was to go legitimate. I knew possibly one guy that stole stolen goods from warehouses but this stuff was mostly extra shit that would be thrown out. I remember playing on the poker machines and pool tables at a restaurant someone owned. The poker machine made like 600 dollars a week. That being said, the Springfield guys owned the company that leased the machines. Any tribute or tax of the machines was simply because they charged a lower rate and wanted cash to avoid taxes. Friend cousins dad did get busted for cocaine trafficking, he wasn’t made. There were Jewish gangsters too but again they ran legitimate businesses. It’s mostly a fraternity aimed at legitimate creating and doing legitimate business, basically you can buy or sell things off the books. It’s really a peaceful area. You can buy a nice home with a great school system for your kids like 10-20 minutes from Springfield and Hartford in the suburbs with woods and farms. So I think because having a great life is very affordable there, there’s less people then nyc and things are speed out, people don’t have greed or need to be as violent or do risky shit like shake downs or murders. Also western MA and CT to Albany have a lot of manufacturing jobs and middle class paying jobs and a lot of Italians that could get those jobs so the need to do violent crimes is less than nyc.
