Quite possibly the most beautifully sad story ever told in the span of one episode of television. Bill and Frank are one of the most interesting characters in the entire show and I wish we got to see more of them. One of the greatest episodes of television ever? I think so. Let me know what you thought about this episode in the comments!

It really was an astoundingly great episode of television. So happy I got to watch it in real time :D

I have watched this episode so many times and every time I cry. It works on so many levels.Bill has built a physical fortress to keep everyone out but there is also a wall around his heart to protect himself from harm. He thinks he is doing ok until Frank arrives. He takes the risk, drops his defences and lets someone in. By the end he realises his love for Frank was the only thing that really mattered. I guess we all want a love story like Bill and Franks but can we make ourselves vulnerable enough to achieve it, and to take the chance if it comes our way? This is so beautifully written and acted. Perfection.

I have to admit it, I was devastated for over a month after watching this episode. It would come back to me and I'd suddenly find myself on the verge of tears. (Lord only knows I ugly cried, big time, while watching it "live".)

Oh thank you! I caught it as soon as I heard it, it was such a smart line and also really elevated my opinion of Joel and how smart he is just with that dialogue alone

The episode was written by the tv show's co-creator and producer Craig Mazin, who wrote the Elton John biopic RocketMan, and the upcoming Borderlands, also based on a video game.

It makes me so much more emotional to think about how they both lived through the AIDS crisis in the 80's, which made Frank's "older means we're still here" hit me harder, as well as them getting married because gay marriage was not legalized in 2003 when the outbreak happened :(

Yes yes yes to both of these.

Oh good point! Even though they never mentioned it you know they lived through it and were never able to have a proper marriage, even though the one they did have was so beautiful

I actually am doing Train To Busan as my very first movie reaction! I will only be putting movie reactions on my Patreon once a month now, but I do have intentions of cutting them down for RU-vid edits as well :)

I’ve never played the game but I’ve looked up videos and googled the storyline, the bill and Frank story in the game is not only different it’s very bitter. If you’re looking to play the game for this Bill and Frank, you’ll probably be disappointed. Though I’ve heard a lot of gamers say the Bill’s town level is one of their favourites.

I am planning on playing the game and seeing how it differs from the show after the season's over, apparently there's a lot of changes but it follows the general plotline and greatly expands on it as well

I cried my eyes out watching this one. I haven’t watched the show, my spouse told me I had to watch this episode and omg. So good! 😭😭😭 I saw it described as “a perfect piece of television” which feels very accurate to me.

You: " I'd be like strip down..." ; Yeah, I'd be like strip down, let me frisk you and check for bites and this would be after I checked him with the red light/green light gizmo.😜 Also, I'd have asked Frank if he'd like his back scrubbed in the shower. Oh, and I am not a whore! If that were me and my husband arguing and I said, "...so help me I'll run thru one of your trip wires," my husband Ron would say, "Wait, let me set up a few more!" Love means knowing how to push each others buttons...and live to talk about it. We're a senior gay couple; together 34 yrs and married 8 yrs. 🥰

The way Bill and Frank were treated in the game was absolutely crap. It irritated me so much how coy and then how horribly the characters were treated in the game that I could be bothered playing any more of it. This episode feels like an apology for how crap they were treated in the game. This episode is a masterpiece of acting, writing and directing ... if only they'd got the same treatment in the game!

I watched so many reactors that I know almost all the lines for the episode and It never seizes to make me sad.. But never will top, THE CRYING MESS I was at first watch of the episode.. Made me think of mum and dad, and how they loved each other so much and now they are together in heaven...

Yeah, the game version went the opposite way. Bill isn't dead when Joel and Ellie find him. The game play is all about getting across town to get a car battery. Along the way you find out Frank got tired of Bill's survivalist BS and wanted more in his life, so he had left. Then it turns out he'd gotten infected and hung himself. He left a bitter 'fuck you' note for Bill to find. So gamer version Bill stayed closed off and was a total asshole, an example of what Joel was turning into. The series version went in the other direction so that Bill was saved by love, an example of what Joel could be if he let himself care about someone again.

These actors are brilliant. How you can so convincingly portrait such deep emotions for a person you only met for one episode is beyond me. And I know it shouldn't make a difference, but as two straight actors, they once again shown so intensely, that your own sexuality doesn't keep you from bringing a wonderful and beautiful story to life, that might not fit your own life.
@RCanadian

Murray Bartlett is gay. They had another actor in mind for Bill, but the actor was already busy with an HBO show, so they got Nick Offerman. Listen to HBO office aftershow blog.
