I loved this episode so much, I wasn't expecting them to deviate from the game's plot so much but I'm glad they did. Also, RIP Annie Wersching, she was the actress who portrayed Tess in the game. She passed away at 45 from cancer just a couple days ago :(

Yes, Joel knew about Frank's illness. He told Ellie in Ep 1 that it had been a year since they left Boston QZ. Joel and Tess are likely the source of Frank's meds. And Joel knew to check the bedroom at the end of the hallway on the main floor rather than the upstairs bedroom. So Frank had been ill with some kind of neurodegenerative disease for over a year at the least, and probably more. With him needing a wheelchair, they had moved to the bedroom down to the main floor. It's a bittersweet end from our viewpoint, but not for Bill and Frank. They had shared a relatively good life (infrequent raider attacks and all). Practical Bill was watering the mums and planting flowers in the square knowing this is important to Frank who could no longer do these things himself. Frank filled the emptiness in Bill's life that was there even before the apocalypse. It was probably the first time Bill felt accepted fully as a whole person. So many small details that service Bill and Frank's story, and visibly develops Joel and Ellie's relationship and propels their journey. With so much loss, it was good to see Joel allow himself a real smile in the truck after Ellie tells him, "Meh. It's better than nothing" while Bill and Frank's song was playing. Parting thought: Bill in the game is an angry, self-loathing man. His imparted advice to Joel in the game gets a resounding response through Bill's letter to Joel in the show. Masterful storytelling by Craig Mazin, beautiful direction by Peter Hoar, and incredible performances by Nick Offerman and Murray Buttler.

The details in this episode are exqusite. I've watched it three times, and you can see both Bill and Frank recognize a potential partner from the minute Frank steps out of the hole. It's subtle, but there. Then Frank observes the fussiness of the house (despite the dust)...so incongruous with Bill's prepper lunatic exterior. The perfect food, the perfectly-arranged plates. The way Bill holds the wine bottle like a sommelier. It's a beautifully subtle mutual seduction. What's surprising in an episode with this level of detail is that in the final shot it's a second story window we see, when Bill and Frank died on the first floor. What an amazingly perfect episode of television.
@girlcalledamelia
@girlcalledamelia Год назад
@@jillcnc Indeed. That first dinner, Bill makes a nervous entrance and barely seats himself, getting the holster of his sidearm caught on the arm rest. He strokes his hair to fix it as he watches Frank eat. And that was just main course. Bill did say there was more. I also noticed that the window had to be the one from the second floor because of the angle to the street beyond. The shot wouldn't have worked otherwise. But I'm happy to overlook it. It was indeed a beautifully wrought tale.

@girlcalledamelia late comment. I never considered that their death might be seen as bittersweet until I started reading comments and watching reactions. I thought it was a perfect bookend intentional way of ending a life well lived. A rare thing in our day and age(or their's). It's easy to forget that few people get imbued with the very old school, life embracing ethos of always being on the alert for a good death. Blessings on my grandparents.

I love the small details in this. One of my favorites is the way Ellie ignores Joel's instruction to "stay here" or "hang back" until he walks out of Bill and Frank's house with Bill's letter. That she understands enough to know this is a moment to just listen--or at least to let him be alone--says so much about her and their relationship. So glad to see your reaction. It's one I've been waiting for. If there wasn't a copyright claim for "Long, Long Time" there probably would be for "On the Nature of Daylight." That track over the final day montage was just as powerful here as it was in Arrival or The Handmaid's Tale or The Leftovers (I know it's been used elsewhere, but those are the places I've heard it).

I loved seeing Bill & Frank's back story. Thank god I've been watching each episode several times cuz I kinda distracted myself with this episode thinking, 'I can't wait for Ellie to meet Bill.' But by the time it came Frank's last day and I couldn't see it ending any other way....and this deviation was so worth it. Such a beautiful love story. And Bill & Ellie are always there in the game. Loving the nods to the game at the end. Ellie & Joel in their game t-shirt & shirt, even the truck was the same colours. And the way Ellie read Bill's hehehehehehe made me laugh so hard. Really glad they're gonna dedicate this episode to *Annie Wersching* 💔 RiP Badass. Great episode guys.

What a great episode! This hit me on so many levels since I lost my mother to Parkinson’s recently and man did she love Ronstadt. As for the changes from the game, someone made a good point that in the game Bill emphasizes hopelessness to Joel, to avoid attachments because they make you weak. Here in the show it’s the opposite with Bill finding his purpose in his attachment in Frank. Beautiful change and makes tons of sense with the impact this could have on Joel’s motivations going forward.

I'm assuming Frank had MS. I do, so the traveling MRI salesman line made sense. And the weakness in his hands also. And I'm old enough to remember the last episode of "M*A*S*H", which at the time was supposed to be the greatest episode of TV ever. This single handedly surpassed it.

Stones stacked on top of each other are an archaic form of signposts, but are still erected worldwide today. The marking is intended to facilitate orientation, especially in impassable and unclear terrain - such as mountains, high mountains, steppes and deserts. Cairns are common in all populated areas of the world. The funny thing is in Texas, stacking stones on top of each other is prohibited by law. The parallel to the infected is Frank here in this episode. The head is clear, but his Multiple Sclerosis or ALS (probably) has control over his body. The infected are aware of their actions, at least in the first stage. In the game, they even cry. They also cry while they are eating someone. And through this episode we also know that Tess and Joel have known each other for more than 13 years and that they were still "decent" people 7 years after the outbreak. Tess told Ellie that they weren't good people and just before her death she told Joel to do all the shit they did right. The distance to Wyoming has to be bridged. So there will be more of these stories like Bill and Frank's.

I couldn’t work out why they used it at the time, but thinking back to the moment in the game when they find the giraffes, it’s the same time Ellie talks to Joel about her reason for continuing on the journey and hints that she knows what her purpose is in all this. In this episode, Frank became Bill’s reason for living, his purpose, and who better than Bill (through his letter to Joel) to convince Joel to find his new purpose in life, even though it’s protecting Ellie, not Tess, at this point

The episode is about the main theme of The Last of Us. Surviving vs Living. Bill taught Frank how to survive, and Frank taught Bill how to live.s That argument in the street is where the game Bill and the show Bill's timeline diverge. In the game Bill says absolutely not, Frank starts resenting him because he’s an extrovert. Eventually Frank leaves, gets bitten, hangs himself to not turn. And leaves an angry letter to Bill, to which Bill swallows his tears and feelings and goes, “Well then fuck you too”. Bill will die bitter and angry having never lived at all. In the show Bill compromised a bit, and let Frank love him how he wanted to love him. Let him make a friend, Tess and Joel. Spruce up the neighborhood. Frank in turn compromised and settled for just that. It’s still an apocalypse, he can’t invite too many people or do too much. So they both died satisfied, in each other’s arms, after a full life. In either case their plot purpose is to teach Joel that surviving isn’t enough. In the game Bill shows Joel how bad and purposeless his life can be if he doesn’t open up. In the show Bill shows Joel how good it can be if he opens up. Bill lets the "danger" song play so that Joel and Tess would come, and get all the weapons and things they needed to have a happy ending like he did. If you read the rest of the letter Bill tells Joel which wine to use in order for Joel to woo Tess and start doing more than just surviving. But it's too late for Tess. Joel reads the letter and realizes that Frank died happy. And Tess died never having that chance. He looks at the key in his hand, and he could part ways with Ellie, but now Tess told him to save who he could save. Bill told him to protect others are what they're for. And he decides to open up a bit, the first time since the time stuck on his broken watch. Both Bill and Franks from the game and show are sides of the same coin. The bad ending. And the good ending.

SPOILERS FOR THIS EPISODE AND GAME BELOW: As a huge TLOU fan who loves both the games. As a gay guy myself this episode was so beautiful and amazing I loved it so much Oh Bill and Frank❤😭🌈 Also yeah I'm sure some might be disappointed that Bill and Ellie didn't have there famous banter back and forth. But this is another version of Bill's story for TV, and it was so masterfully done I'm fine with it. Plus I will always have the games version for that as well. Also the end result was still the same in the game you get a battery truck and supplies that set's Joel and Ellie on there way, and in the show you get a battery truck and supplies that set's Joel and Ellie on there way so the end result is still the same. But I do wonder something since Bill died in the show is that Naughty Dog saying we will never see Bill again in a future TLOU game? because of course he didn't die in the game he lived. But amazing episode bravo!! it destroyed me I cried LOL🥰 Also yes in the game Frank was bitten in the process of trying to get the battery and wanting to leave. And then he hangs himself, and we come across his body later in the house. Also another amazing moment that was also in the show and in the game as well was Ellie finding the arcade game machine and her playfully pretending to play it. In the show in the convenience store she finds what looks like a Mortal Kombat arcade game. Now in the game it was a totally different arcade game it was called The Turning and the character was called Angel Knifes which we find out more about in the Left Behind DLC. And I look forward to the episode coming later about Riley and the stuff that happened in Left Behind. Anyways, sorry I'm rambling LOL. But love the video and reaction you both are awesome as always🤗

I also missed the verbal sparring that Bill and Ellie might have had, but the differences I noticed most were that Joel did not pick up a bow (that and a knife are on the list of things I'd think he'd want, especially on a long trip) and there was no bloater encounter. In addition, Joel did not gain trust in Ellie as he did in the game while in Bill's town when she opened doors for him and helped him get out of a trap. Ellie picking up a gun earlier and in secret could be very interesting. I am enjoying the show immensely, though it isn't hitting me emotionally as much as it seemingly is for so many others. Not a complaint, just an observation.

@GamingAfterBed Год назад
I was saying to Sherbs I think they are saving the bloater for a bit later, as we do also get the bloater encounter in the university, which has a lot more interesting backstory that could be dealt with than the school did in the game. Yes! The gun in secret thing made me think maybe they will do that later scene in the hotel!

The scene where Bill is shot and he thinks he's gonna die, his first thoughts are about taking care of Frank, hence him telling Frank to call Joel. It's poignant because he sees Joel as he sees himself: a Protector. It becomes even more so in the letter he writes to Joel, which makes Joel realize that his purpose is to protect Ellie.

Not sure I'd get *too* far ahead of ourselves there.. Not sure 'bout things there in the UK, but when the pandemic started (covid), all the first people to get exasperated and nuts here in the US were all the right-wingers, who everyone'd long thought were supposed to be all the big preppers. Whining and bitching about NEEDING to go to school, go to work, get a haircut, buy groceries, go to the bar, every stupid thing that would put them into contact with other humans, otherwise they were going to "go crazy". Like hey, we thought you were the ones with all the gas masks and years' worth of supplies of food in pantries an' everything. An' nobody'd gotten tested because there weren't tests, for months. Our conservative voters were freakishly anti-vaccine, but there was a surprising amount of equally anti-vaxx sentiment from our political left, though many of them were already anti-vaccines in general long before the covid pandemic. But yeah.. turned out all our supposed preppers (conservatives and libertarians) were the least willing to lockdown at all. A shocking proportion of them are still convinced covid was the biggest hoax perpetrated (on them) by the "liberal elite".
@GamingAfterBed
@GamingAfterBed Год назад
While we don’t have the big preppers really in the UK, we had a similar thing here with people complaining about the lockdowns, although I’m not sure it was so clear cut in that right wing = unwilling to lockdown, left wing = supportive. It really seemed to depend on a number of factors for each person.

Ours were *very* noticeably along partisan lines, and there've been multiple reports that covid-related deaths were noticeably higher in Trump-supporting counties/voting districts. Even one of my brothers was quite convinced covid-related deaths reported by counties and thus states were largely fabricated due to a massive conspiracy by the Democratic Party... 🙄 He largely refused to listen to anything the rest of our family had to say, including our other brother who works in biotech.

the rock pile was most likely marker for Tess why was Ellie sadistic to the infected in the basement? she saw no reaction, but seemed crazy happy to put her metal into it why was Ellie being mean saying it wasn't her fault Tess ended? it wasn't her fault of course, but she was being a jerk about it, imo does this mean Joel doesn't know how to make the 'can with nails and other stuff that you throw under clickers and they cease being'? (don't know if can use the words)
@GamingAfterBed

The infected in the basement - I feel Ellie was trying to work out how human it was, then when she cut into it and saw there was nothing, I think there was grief (for a reason I guess I shouldn’t say in case non-game playing viewers are reading) which came out as anger at that point. Joel and Ellie are very similar really in that sense. I don’t think Ellie was being a jerk particularly - Joel was having a hard time and being an arse to her, but him and Tess did choose to take Ellie for the battery, she’s not wrong there.
@zissoulander
@zissoulander Год назад
'why was Ellie sadistic to the infected in the basement? she saw no reaction, but seemed crazy happy to put her metal into it' - Recall in episode 2 one of the questions Ellie asked Joel was if it was hard to kill an infected knowing that someone is 'alive' in there. I interpreted the basement scene with the trapped clicker in two ways 1.) that she's sorting it out for herself to see if she feels anything killing infected, and 2.) she's angry and frustrated at her immunity and is striking back at infected. If you've played the game you'll know that Ellie has survivor's guilt, especially regarding someone close to her. 'why was Ellie being mean saying it wasn't her fault Tess ended? it wasn't her fault of course, but she was being a jerk about it, imo' - She's feeling defensive about being blamed for someone's death. She feels a lot of guilt of over someone dying which will likely be revealed later in the season. She blames herself and is angry that she didn't die as well.
