The Singer 646 represents several models of slant shank Singers. The bobbin on these sewing machines winds under the needle plate. I discuss the selection of the proper spool cap and why you must be careful to avoid getting those large loops of thread under your fabric. I demonstrate threading the machine, winding a bobbin, the HOME position, and how the stitch length regulator works.

Lauren Hart Hi Laure! It sounds like you enjoyed it! Please feel free to share them. " The Anatomy of a Stitch" and the first couple of "Through the Second Stitch" videos have lots of trick I've been shown over the last 20+ years. Allen

Hi Alan I opened it up wiped of the old oil I need a yellow little belt and a carbon brush that goes into where you plug into the back . You would know about that . But I prayed about it. Because the wheel still wouldn’t turn so I took all the the bobbin out and found a small knot of cotton stuck at the back and that. Was it the wheel goes around , but I found the bits that need to be fixed so thanks again Alan . It amazing that you live all that way in America and I live in England and you get my message it’s amazing isn’t it take care.

Your sewing machines are so clean looking! I guess some people look after them like me!

Moe Luck Thanks for the comment! I think it's much more fun to sew on a clean machine and a machine that's clean inside and out and lubed properly runs better then one that's not!

Even though I found the manual (PDF) for the 646 online, your tutorial has helped me so much more. Thank you. I was given this machine by an aunt and I love it more than the three newer (but on the cheaper-end) machines I have (two Singers and one Brother). I was shocked to find that even though this machine is 50 years old, it still has so many perks such as the needle threader, and easy bobbin winding -- even easier than the newer Singers I have! This is now the machine I use most! I gave up on the two Singers, and only use the Brother when I'm working with two different color threads on one project or sewing sleeves or cuffs because it has the sleeve arm, or when I'm sewing buttons because the 646 only came with the all-purpose foot, no other accessories. I need to find and purchase the accessories for it because I really love working on the 646. Any suggestions on specific accessories to purchase? Also, what do you use instead of the horizontal spool holder for large straight-run projects? Thanks again.. this was awesome. Going to watch your other tuts.

Arlene Baratta Photography Thanks for your nice comments! I hope my videos help! I use the vertical spool pin that came with the machine. I put a felt pad on it to act as a little spool break. I probably have an accessory box down stairs for it. 651-747-1176. Allen

I have a 830 bernina I bought used, I love the machine. I had a service, everything's working well except occasionally the clutch seems not to move the machine or motor is running just not engaging ( or sewing ) just wondering if the its a adjustment with the belt. thanks Doreen

doreen smith hi Doreen. It is hard to say anything for sure but belt tightening without troubleshooting could cause even more expensive problems. Old oil and grease, needle damage, and thread wrapped where it shouldn't be cause most belts to slip. Thanks for your question!

Mariliza B,A,C The Singer 646 uses plastic gears for driving the hook and feed dogs. These gears get old, dry, and brittle! They last 30-40 years typically. Guessing solutions without seeing the machine is tough but broken gears is very common on these machines and can cause what you are describing. Thanks for the question

How do I replace the top cover to a 646 singer

I have a Singer 648. I want to quilt. I have a walking foot as well as a darning/quilting foot. How do I set up my machine to 1. Sew my quilt together and, 2. Free quilt patterns? I am having problems with the walking foot shifying the fabric! Thank you!
@abberepair8288
@abberepair8288 5 лет назад
Carla Hildebrand hi Carla, I wish I could answer every question that everybody asks me but... a walking foot or “even feed foot” doesn’t pull the fabric from the top of your pile it two “feet” that push down and move forward and backward more freely. It is activated up and down with the needle bar.the fabric stack can still move as you sew. Pins or a long basting stitch can help hold it together. Turning your upper tension down from 5 to 2 or 3 when you baste makes it easier to remove the stitch. Running over pins can bend the needle causing it to hit, usually the hook, and breaking. This permanently damages your hook. Free motion sewing also causes the needle to bend as you move the fabric while the needle is on the way down. Again, needles don’t just break, they break because they hit something, usually the hook first then the needle plate. I repair a lot of needle damage from hooks and needle plates. I won’t free motion sew. It does too much damage! Find someone with a long arm quilting machine. Hope this helps. Allen

Hi I have a Singer Touch & Sew 758 similar to this my timing was out and I fixed it but now the needle seems to be to the left a tiny bit when its in the middle position?? Don't know where to adjust this? It goes over to left more when I put it in the left position a little more and it goes to the right position but not all the way when I slide lever to the right position? I'm in Canada I can't take it into your shop?
@abberepair8288
@abberepair8288 7 лет назад
Moe Luck good luck! Take the top off and look at the linkage where the right, center, left lever connects. Loosen the screw slightly and shit the linkage until the needle aligns. Some models also have an adjustment screw above the "paddle board". If yours has this type of eccentric, it also has a very small set screw that needs to be loosened before it can be adjusted. The third kind can only be adjusted by loosening the two screws located in the frame behind the needle bar. This can be a pain! If it's your only option it may be best to let it be off a little. NOTE: Make sure it's not your presser foot that's off. Remove your presser foot and check the needle position to the hole in the needle plate. Many machines come to me with a presser foot that has too small a hole in it. I hope this helps. Love Canada! Allen

Yes I've done those things you mentioned. I figured it out but still the same. Just that the lever for needle position doesn't seem to stay put I guess the plastic is worn a little so it slips out of place I guess I could put a little washer on there to hold better? Love your video's hope make some more? It makes sense what your saying. You should be a teacher and teach repairing operating sewing machines properly.
@abberepair8288
@abberepair8288 7 лет назад
Moe Luck yes the plastic could be worn. It's also a possibility that old old and grease won't let the parts go all the way up to the position they be in to hold the presser foot up! I fixed this problem on a machine just last week. It took no new parts just a very thorough cleaning and luring! Allen

That should say lubing. My smart program new I was wrong and it changed my word for me!!!
@k-michael8014
@k-michael8014 7 лет назад
It wasn't the presser foot? It was the slide button for needle position! The needle bar doesn't stay in the middle position is what I was trying to get across. Its a little to the side on the left not directly on the middle I can't put it in the middle directly?
