Over the last season our engine has been steaming or smoking and it has slowly gotten worse. It is now at the point where if we run it over 1900 rpm it looks like a Bond car in escape mode. This video details what we did to fix it. You should know we had already cleaned the heat exchanger with cold concrete cleaner (containing hydrochloric acid) to remove limescale and replaced out exhaust elbow. Watch to find out what we did.

On my D2-40 I had steam above 1850 revs. I added a salt water intake by using a T on the sink and a Y to the salt water pump. It solved the problem. I also added a filter to prevent barnacle to get into the impeller. This also provides an advantage whenever a plastic bag might block water intake on the sail drive.

This is something we are considering doing. We think having a separate intake for cooling the engine would be better than relying on water coming through the sail drive, which has a very small opening and is easily blocked. Thanks for the idea.

@@sailingseagullsouth I think the comment refers to something you say at 7:14- the heat exchanger has salt water in the tubes and fresh outside the tubes. Thanks for such an in-depth video. We have steam coming from our old TMD40. Sigh.

We hope it helps. It's so frustrating when you don't know what to try to fix the problems. Let us know if it works. 😀

Any questions just ask? If we can help we will. The community spirit between sailors is an important one for us. Many people have helped us in the past. 🤞

You changed a number of parts on your engine and the problem has been solved but if you had to pick one item that solved the problem which would it be?
@sailingseagullsouth
@sailingseagullsouth Год назад
This is tricky, but the fuel injectors is probably the one.

I’ve just changed the exhaust elbow on my Thornycroft 230 d engine when I fitted the new one the engine started and stopped within seconds and will not stay running each time I try Question 🙋 Do you have to bleed the water system or something when you change exhaust elbow thanks 🙏
@sailingseagullsouth
@sailingseagullsouth Год назад
@@sailingmsmalachite1503 We do not know about your engine specifically, but we primed our raw water filter by filling it up with tap water to create suction. Once water is coming out the back consistently it shows its working. Not sure why changing the elbow has caused the engine to not work. Sorry.

How do you explain the combustion gas in the coolant? Seems like the head gasket must have had some seepage. Did you repeat this test after re-assembly?
@sailingseagullsouth
@sailingseagullsouth 10 месяцев назад
@@1768ify We did change all the gaskets when we had the block off the engine. So it may have been a gasket issue.
