Wow! Your dendrobium lawesii looks so neat and pretty like that! I never really wanted a dendrobium but this one and one other makes me want them. Can’t wait to see it in bloom!

Of all the dendrobiums lawesii is great value as the flowers come in a range of colours and last for such a long time.

Thanks Howard, as interesting as ever. BTW I have had thrips this year as well, first time in 30 years of growing. Have resorted to a Hotbox Sulphume device, fingers crossed ! 🤞

Beautiful plants and thank you for the lovely episode! My Schoenorchis scolopendria bloomed for the first time this year and I'm quite pleased :) Greetings from Nepal 🙏 Abu.

Thankyou Abu. How amazing to have a viewer from Nepal. Such a beautiful country - and great for orchids I would imagine.

Have you ever watched missorchidgirl? On RU-vid of course. I’m sure you know of her but she had horrible issues with thrips and her cattleya collection as well as other orchids. She has an amazing diy insecticide that is mineral oil based and very easy and not harmful at all. Some plants are sensitive but she will tell you about it. If you ever find you wanna try something else. Here’s the link. And she also battled with spider mites for many years. She doesn’t like chemicals and found out this works great. I love your methods of helpful creatures to do the bidding!

Thanks. Yes, I've watched quite a few videos on pest controls over the years. There's no shortage of suggestions. I have used neem oil in the past for red spider which seemed to work quite well but I'm quite attracted to the concept of using natural predators. In the case of orchids snails and any visiting slugs the predator is me with a torch!

I found thrips on my plants a few days ago ans have been using Acetamiprid. It's UK legal and should work fine. I got a sachet of powder to dilute and spray and you can also get a soil drench for it, so that may be something to look into for your thrips. I don't have personal evidence of it as I've only been using it for a few days, though.

So far the predatory mites seem to be doing a great job but thanks for your advice. They seem to be attracted to a few orchids whilst others are completely unaffected. There is always a lot more to learn with orchid growing!

Greetings Howard from Kentucky in the US. Thanks for another great video. I love miniature orchids especially mounted ones. I am considering ordering a Phalaenopsis parishii mount after seeing your plant. I actually have better success with mounted orchids than potted ones. I so enjoy watching your videos. Have a great weekend, James

That Podangis is absolutely stunning, the translucent spurs really let you see things in a way you don't normally get to! Is it (night time?) fragrant?
@HowardRice
@HowardRice 3 месяца назад
Thanks. No, it doesn't seem to be scented in the evening or at night.

Do you own Ceratochilus biglandulosus and Neocogniauxia monophylla ?
@HowardRice
@HowardRice 3 месяца назад
Hi David, I have both of those. I've had the Ceratochilus for over 7 years. It grows very slowly but surely and flowers at least once a year. I included it in a video - Episode 26 if you want to see it. My Neocogniauxia is several years old but hasn't flowered yet and also grows very slowly so I need to try and work out what I'm doing wrong.

What happens with the predatory mites when in the greenhouse long term??
@HowardRice
@HowardRice 3 месяца назад
Not sure but I think they'll keep breeding as long as they have something to eat and it's warm enough.

Thanks for the tip. Luckily the predatory mites seem to be doing a good job. I've recently fund just a few adults and I used a paint brush to squash them.
