Another great podcast, ladies. I agree with the commenter you talked about, listening to y’all talk is like spending time with our quilting friends. Especially since the Covid virus we haven’t been able to do that. I wanted to let you know that I made Sherri’s Sea Glass quilt with the same fabric line. I gave it to my mother-in-law who is 96 years old and the best MIL anyone could ask for! She absolutely adores it!!! So a special thanks for such a great pattern and beautiful fabric line that made a wonderful woman very happy!!❤️❤️❤️

Love your comment about young quilters. I am 71 years old but loved quilts since very young. Didn't have time or money to quilt then. It makes me so happy to see younger people like you and your Mom teaching quilting and its joy. I dont have friends or family who do not appreciate the art like you do.

Happy Birthday, Sherri!! You are such a precious, gentle spirit!!! We DEFINITELY need more of that in our society today!!! I have kept up with you since I first met you at the Quilters’ Gathering in Berlin , Ohio, last August. I love both you and Corey!!!!!! So I faithfully read your blog, and especially love your Saturday blog, when you have tips and “goodies” in so many different categories!!! NOW I am getting to meet your daughter, Chelsi, through your new podcast. I was listening to it, and now I am watching both of you on UTube!!!! I hope you will continue for a very long time!!!! You both are doing a WONDERFUL job!!!🤗🤗🤗. I have only been quilting for 2 1/2 Years now, and I just love your fabrics and patterns!!! God bless you, dear!!! You seem to have such a wonderful family!!! Charlotte Platt from St Louis.💕❤️

Happy Belated Birthday, Sherri🎂 and thank you for all you and your daughter shared about quilting. I’m an older quilter, 64yrs old and I’ve recently retired so I’m now able to get more into it. I loved that you talked about being able to start or get into quilting at any age. Maybe I’m not too old after all, thank you for your inspiration! 👵🏼💖

I completely agree about learning to quilt at any stage of life. As a life long needlepointer, I learned to quilt at 30. I have been a avid quilter ever since. Both pastimes are shared with my mother and have fostered so many cherished memories.

Really enjoy your podcasts, I watch on RU-vid. I started quilting just on 2 years ago after stumbling on a Jenny Doan tutorial. I thought " when I get my clearance to go back to work, I'm going to have a go at that". (Breast cancer caught early). One of my sisters shouted me my first few FQ 's & a 6 1/2 " square ruler. Was immediately hooked. I have been garment sewing since childhood & am thoroughly enjoying gaining new skills.

Happy Birthday Sherri. I have just found your pod cast and love it I think you both are an inspiration. The day I listened to this (which was the next day) I had a new quilter in my class. She is 20 years old and is starting from scratch, so I am hoping to pass on some of the passion and inspiration I have as well as some that you both have as well. Thank you for all you do for the industry of quilting. I love the fact that you are mother and daughter and that you are passing on a time honored tradition to others. Quilt on!! I have a question about quilting your own quilts - do either of you ever quilt your own quilts on your home machine? Can’t wait to see the new fabric and projects - and... Love your podcast!! I too love the binding process - have done a couple by machine, but wished I had done by hand. That’s my favorite part. I too have always pressed the top after sewing the binding. I didn’t learn it from anyone, but love the way it looks. I am in my 50s, but have been a crafter, stitcher, knitter, crocheted and sewist for many years. I have NEVER had friends that sewed- I am lucky to be retired now and able to visit my local quilt shop and join different groups to share my love!! Thanks for this wonderful podcast!! Happy birthday Sherrie!!

I love how quilting is for all ages! I am in my early 30s and my friends give me the "do your old lady thing" whenever I'm quilting. They mean it jokingly, but I respond with, "Those ladies with all that experience will kick my butt at quilting! Happy Birthday, Sherri! I'm really enjoying your podcasts. I'm glad that you stressed that quilting is not a passion for just "retired old ladies", because I believe many people are missing out on a wonderful hobby or even career! I've been on a mission for years to teach kids to sew and quilt at an early age, and now that I'm nearing the "retired old lady" years 😉, I anticipate having more time to do so.

Our local quilt shop owners told me that they've been noticing a trend - more young quilt/fabric designers and more young customers in their shop. My 20-something daughter worked at that quilt shop for five years to get through college. She's the one who's inspired me to quilt. Incidentally, she's a knitter too!! Not just for old ladies anymore! 😁

I think you’re great on here Chelsi! I’d love to see a tour of your sewing space. So cool that you have a mom to enjoy quilting and fabric with. I begged my mom for a sewing machine as a kid after making pajama pants in Girl Scouts around age 8. She always said no. She wasn’t raised sewing and her mom and grandmother didnt sew (for pleasure anyways). When I moved out for college my boyfriend (now husband) bought me my first sewing machine for Valentine’s Day. I’ve been sewing for 14 years now. I have 4 kids very close in age so I have taken breaks over the years but now my kids are a bit more independent I have been sewing daily (at least a few mins) and I find it helps my overall well being. It reminds me I’m more then just a mom which I’ve kind of forgotten over the past 5 years. I’m in my early 30’s and I do not know anyone who sews or quilts that is my age. My step mother in law sews so I can talk with her some about it but I truly wish there were more people (in person) my age that I could find to discuss sewing/quilting.

I taught myself how to do all machine binding. I am a charity quilter and it is stronger. I machine stitch on the back first. I then pull it around to the front and use a serpentine stitch on it. It is a pretty stitch and makes it really strong. On a show quilt or extra special one I do it like you guys. Love this show.

Some one taught me to use school glue when doing the backside of my binding, to avoid the pins and getting stuck by them. I also press my binding once sewn on the front side. I also press over to the back side as I use the school glue. Note, I put the glue as far inside edge as possible, as it’s easier to hand sew. If I machine bind, I do not glue.

Great podcast! I really enjoy watching. As a beginner quilter, I especially enjoy your covering so many topics like prewashing and starching! During podcast 4 you mention the importance of a 1/4” seam allowance. I’ve heard others talk about a scant 1/4” allowance - that it helps to get the correct block size. Do you ever sew with a scant 1/4” seam allowance? This is one area I find confusing. Thank you.

Happy birthday, Sherri! I enjoy listening on the podcast and watching on RU-vid! I appreciate the time you put in to creating this for us. I have just started cutting up my leftovers for future projects. My favorite is making HSTs whenever the pattern says to discard that fabric. I will definitely be making a 2020 quilt with those! I do have a question for a future cast: What can we expect to pay to have someone quilt my quilts for me? I have 10 projects to do the finishing on and am not sure if I want to keep doing stitch in the ditch. 😊

Sherri, you have been a favourite of mine for a couple years now, but I am really loving you & Chelsi together! The podcast is wonderful. I love the format and the obvious enjoyment you have working together. #motherdaughtergoals I always learn something new from every post and video: thank you so much for all the tips, tricks, and helpful advice/wisdom you both share. Side question - I found a layer cake of your Valley collection (which I adore!) at my favourite local quilt shop, but I was wondering if you could give me any coordinating bella solids I could use to make a quilt from besides Ivory (lol)? I'd really appreciate it since it has been difficult to find yardage. Every day that you have a new video is a good day. I have really enjoyed listening to your podcasts. I just started quilting (46 years old). It's my therapy. My mother used to quilt however she did EVERYTHING by hand. Thank the Lord for modern conveniences. I do have a question... I am hung up on whether to take my quilts to have them quilted vs. quilting them myself. I want to do it from start to finish. I feel like I would be short changing (for lack of a better word) the recipient of the quilt. I know piecing is time consuming and requires skills but I'm just curious on your thoughts on custom long arm quilting vs. doing your own. I know size is also a factor on what can be done on a domestic machine.
@sherrimcconnell4094
@sherrimcconnell4094 4 года назад
Many people do all of their quilting on a regular machine. I used to also want to do everything from start to finish, but then I realized I wouldn't get nearly the amount done. Still, I do love hand work and have fun when I can quilt a pillow and make the entire project from start to finish.

I'm an old retired lady. I get so tired of people dismissing an art or craft because it's only done by old ladies. Where does that stigma come from? We are keeping art and skills alive, how can that be negative? I started sewing, embroidery, quilting when I was young, now I just happen to be old; we all age and become old at some point in our lives.

My question for next week is about cutting. I am a newer quilter and have noticed that in most tutorials it is assumed you know where to start. I am currently cutting the Bloomtopia backing 2020 part which I love. I cut as the instructions are listed starting at the top then down to the last squares. BUT upon really looking there were a couple of longer strips ... 3 1/2 X 36 1/2 “ rectangles then the 3 1/2 X 12 1/2 then the 6 1/2 pieces etc.. so I started with the longest pieces and worked down to the final 2 1/2” squares. Is that the most efficient way to cut, or is that what I should always have done? I have done the FQS beginner quilt and blindly cut what Kimberley did and if I remember there pieces were pretty well the same measurements give or take a couple. You knocked it out of the ballpark with this quilt AND the backing, the donations to Make A Wish were phenomenal. I will definitely order the book All-In-One guide, but really rely on all of your tutorials. Love this new RU-vid format with Q and A’s along with the new products and old favourites.

Where do you purchase the spiral notebook and tear off notepad? I can’t find any resourse for these. Thank you.

Question: once you start a project on a particular machine, is it true, you should not change machines? I have a Janome memory craft 15000, but so big to travel with, so I use my euro Pro (made by Mercury), but will start a new project with it...

I've heard this before too. As long as your 1/4" seam is accurate, and you've tested it on both, you can switch machines.

They are available at lots of quilt shops. Ask your favorite store about them. We design for Moda Fabrics.
