Speaking of darning.... We have a quilt on our bed and our dog accidentally put a hole in it. I got so excited because I have been really diving deep into visible mending. Never in my life did I think I would get this excited about my pet causing damage to an item I love. Lol. One of these days I will be getting out my mending tools and having so much fun embellishing our lovely quilt.

Mark’s shawl is glorious. Those socks will be so cool. Work overload, ugh…Don’t stress about it too much, but I hope works slows down and lets you get back to crafting.

Congratulations on finishing Mark's shawl. It's BEAUTIFUL!! I must admit that when I heard "I've finished Mark's" my brain put in 'jumper' and was so surprised to see the shawl! LOL. Good on you for repairing the holey socks. And hey, Darwin will get done, right. If he gets a finger a week, then let it be what it is. He's going to be wonderful - in his own time. It's a hobby, not a punishment. And you'll get things done. Well done on the West socks - they are gorgeous. Well, IT is but I'm certain it's mate will be as well.

I split my skein into 2 cakes and use 9" circulars to work them both at the same time in tandem (Cuff 1, Cuff 2, Leg 2, Leg 1, etc) so that I am finishing them both up at the same time. I like to always have at least a pair (usually 2 pair) of socks going as well as a hat and a garment.

Congratulations 🎉 on finishing Mark’s shawl!! I am cutting and clumping my fringes as I watch you. I am hoping to get them attached tomorrow after work so that I can block the shawl in time to pack it for my conference this weekend! 🤞🏼 that I will have a shawl dance next weekend too.

Hi Martin!! Regarding the spinning I wanted to mention that maybe it’s a long wool making it harder to draft. It’s harder to spin long wool on a drop spindle. I usually pre-draft my fiber by gently fluffing lengthwise and horizontally and that makes drafting while spinning much smoother. When I first learned on a drop spindle I used the park and draft method and that really helped me get a more consistent yarn. There’s also different preparations to fiber (pin drafted or worsted VS carded which is a woolen prep). For needle felting I’ve seen both preparations. You can technically spin with felting fiber unless it’s very compacted. I hope that helps. Love your channel ❤

Also, @fiberspider has a great drop spindle tutorial here on RU-vid that I found really really helpful at the start. That’s a good one to check out 😊

Marks shawl is so beautiful, congrats on completing it. Loving the new weekly style. I’ve been working on the Selma sleep suit by petite knit for my new Nibling (niece or nephew) arriving soon. I would like to cast on a new pair of socks too but working on some I’ve called the slip socks as not used a pattern and I’m trying not to cast on before completing some of my longer standing projects! Have a great week and see you next week 😊

I used to knit socks on dpns, and I couldnt imagine ever managing magic loop. Now magic loop is all I use and I cant imagine that i used to knit socks on dpns.🙃 And by the way, the Charles Darwin doll looks very much like the Dutch 70s kids character "Paulus de boskabouter"🤣

Hi Martyn, my pro tip for spinning yarn would be: Pre draft your roving! It will help you to get a smooth and even supply of fibre while spinning. It doesn’t matter if you buy felting roving or superwashed roving. For a beginner I would recommend a higher micron, because the fibers will hold together easyer than in a finer micron. Beware tough! Spinning yarn can become an addiction ❤

Your first spinning is bound to have chunky, lumpy bits in it. No matter what I spin now it always ends up 4ply - wish I could spin thicker. Thanks for the company whilst knitting my hand spun (from over 10 years ago)

With your fiber you are spinning it might help if you pre draft it before you spin it. just go through the hank of fiber and pull it enough to get the fiber to start sliding a bit. once you get it a little looser it should be much easier to get the fiber consistent when you spin. have fun

Ugh I am determined to do a bit cable knit sweater this year. I've already swatched for it and have my needles ready. Every time I go to cast on, I get nervous about all the charts and put it down. I've worked cables before, but just on small projects (hats, socks, etc). This will be my first time doing multiple cables and doing them on a large garment.

I love your spinning! IT TAKES TIME! Please don't beat yourself up! I've spun all kinds of wool. I would say that the wool you're using is fine for spinning. You can also pre-draft to make it easier to draft while you're spinning.

Wool with a long stapel is easier to spin than wool with a short stapel. Merino wool has a short stapel and is therefore more difficult to process. Therefore, you may have trouble spinning a regular yarn. Congratulations on Mark's shawl.

Don't be so hard on yourself with your spinning I bought a couple of skiens of hand dyed hand spun wool if was perfect looking but both skiens when I wound them had big "clumps" 100 of un spun fibre in the middle it cost a fortune too luckily I'm a felter but that's not the point xxx

You can spin that fibre but remember drop spindles are different weights and maybe your spindle is the wrong weight for the thickness of the yarn you want. Have you tried parking and pre drafting?

I really do like your podcast, although sometimes I wonder why, because we couldn't be more opposites in our crafting. I only work on one project, very seldom two. I can not stand a stash. in my personal live I really don't like it when people make promises they don't keep. but all this I take with a laugh from you. so, I am looking forward to your list of WIP's and I also would like once a list of all your kits from Toft, there must be quiet a lot by now. are you still subscribed to the 'endangered species'-club? greetings from a old fashioned flemish housewife.

If it’s felting fibre it might be a bit more grabby, try pre drafting to loosen the fibres and thin the diameter down, also check the length of the individual fibres by pulling some from the end, when you are drafting to spin ensure that you have the distance of the drafting zone is slightly longer that the fibre length, this is something you need to assess for each new fibre as a fibre lengths are not the same. Hope this helps, I have just wound my sock yarn for a pair of socks in the spiral
