We kick off the start of 1936 with our introduction to Dell Publishing, Popular Comics, Dick Tracy, and Little Orphan Annie! But are these like the characters you know...?
Interesting info about Harold Gray -- and thanks for highlighting the importance of local politics/politicians. Many years ago, I read some reprints of old Dick Tracy strips. Pruneface is the villain whose appearance made the biggest impact on me. Did the strange-looking costumed villains of, say, Batman, influence the type of villain Tracy battled (or vice versa)? -- Steve
Pruneface was a good villain too! Interesting that both of our favorite Dick Tracy villains were revived by later writers since the 1940s. I would say that Dick Tracy was more likely to inspire Batman than vice versa, but really it isn't a hard concept that, if bigger, more colorful heroes are selling better, then bigger, more colorful villains will sell better too.
