Representing the first six issues, that I can't show you and haven't even seen myself (King Features is very protective), I'm instead going to talk more broadly about the contents - Flash Gordon, Mandrake the Magician, Bringing Up Father, Snuffy Smith, and there might be a few mentions of a certain sailor...

janelane means here that Briggs should have stepped down graciously and let Raymond have his old job back. I don't think anyone knows why King Features didn't even ask him to; Raymond was offered the consolation prize of getting to start a new strip, which is how we got Rip Kirby.

Thanks for the video! Do you know of other examples (besides Flash/Buck) where the clone became at least as popular as the original? I think the Superman/Captain Marvel lawsuit started in the early 1940s. Did other comic book or comic strip publishers start to protect their IP more carefully in the late 30s or early 40s? Aside: An internet search reveals more parody versions of the Popeye theme song than I was aware of.

I had to think about that for a bit...the very first successful aviator comic strip was Tailspin Tommy, but The Adventures of Smilin' Jack and Scorchy Smith, two similar aviator features, eclipsed Tommy in popularity. I don't know of any occurrences of comic strip syndicates suing or even sending cease and desist letters to other syndicates over character clones; it just seemed like an accepted given of the industry that it was going to happen - which will make DC's overprotectiveness of Superman all the more unusual.

Melissa, thanks for answering my questions! I enjoy that your videos cover the content of the comics and the larger context in which they were created.
