This episode covers a breadth of topics with multi-talented full-time artist Louisa Boyd interviewed by Elizabeth (Lizzy Biggs Photography) for Chester Art Beat.
Louisa has spent her career exploring belonging with ongoing themes of connection and freedom in her work which starts with abstract mark-making irrespective of the medium with which she is working which then is further refined.
Nature is integral to Louisa's artistic practice. Her process incorporates walks, especially around Bickerton Hill in Cheshire where she chooses to be fully present in experiencing the fleeting and shifting very quick changes in time light and weather. On return to the studio, this leads her to create abstract marks and shapes to capture the feeling of place.
She explains to Elizabeth how a piece might be developed before the discussion moved on to ca (map) and platonic shapes with an understanding of the elements. Where truly do we belong and what can we call mine? Find out how Louisa believes this can be done as you listen today.
Recent curiosities have led her to take risks, some of which have worked. Louisa gives us a sneak peek into those and her recent work aided by Lou Condon the Ceramic Botanist who will also be exhibiting at Chester Art Beat (Storyhouse venue 10).
Inspired very much by Escher we get to hear something of what exhibiting next to his work at an international show celebrating Escher was like and how the invitation to exhibit came out of the blue.
Discussions continue onto that much-discussed question of showcasing work, being seen online, who is watching and how do we show up? This is the age of opportunity Louisa asserts, her experiences suggest this is certainly true!
