I love campaign games. My wife and I probably play 4-5 new campaigns a year, including the Arkham LCG, but we have certainly abandoned ones we don't like (ISS Vanguard, Etherfields, and 7th Citadel, for example). Few campaign games actually have robust enough mechanics to be interesting for the entire length of the campaign, and so many campaigns are artificially lengthened by bloat. Awaken Realms in particular are the main culprits when it comes to packing their games with a bunch of material that doesn't actually add to the experience; I'd much rather they cut the content in half and spend their time and energy refining the core game so that there is no grind and so that the mechanics are actually interesting enough to sustain my attention for 12-20 games. While I'm far from being done with campaign games, I'm definitely done with Awaken Realms.

It is vital for people to understand if their gaming group(s) are conducive to campaign gaming. If so, having a new one lined up as you near the conclusion of another makes sense (even if they're doing 2-3 in parallel). If not, then it can be quite a challenge to gather like minds to embark on a campaign game, especially when all are used to a mish-mash of different games from week to week. Safest option is to simply not consider them. There is of course solo, and I suspect there are a very high % of gamers who play these campaign games solo. Not something I enjoy myself, as the interaction with others is a major part of gaming for me.
@TheBrokenMeeple

Doing them at game clubs irks me, because it sucks those players away for months on end meaning you can't play any games with them until they finish.

Am with you on the campaign games. Got to dungeon 7 of JOTL and felt it too samey and felt it was like work. Sold it shortly afterwards. And people might say “but a normal game can also become samey”. True but then I just leave it in the kallax for a few months. With a campaign you feel obliged to finish it otherwise you forget the overarching story. And that really is also not for me. I love scenarios though, they are great.

I backed the company's 3 kickstarters before this one and they were a fun little series of light games, I think a lot of the backers of silver wood grove were in a similar boat and yes I did back it as well unfortunately this game dented some of the trust in this company

I find this really fascinating because I am having the opposite problem at the moment in that non-campaign non-narrative games feel like I am just going through the motions and in a sense not really doing anything… I really want to like games like Scholars of the South Tigris but I just wonder why I’m going through the motions. what is really confusing me is that I love Hadrian’s Wall and Legacy of Yu. So I am obviously okay with worker placement and repetition. but overall campaign games with their sense of progression and a purpose seem to appeal to me more. (currently playing ISS Vanguard)

I experienced something similar. I've played through two planets of ISS Vanguard. Sleeping Gods sits on my shelf in shrink wrap. Pandemic Legacy Season 1 also sits there, although I did play two non-campaign games of it. And, I pledged STALKER last summer. Additionally, non-campaign games, including some meaty ones like Frostpunk and High Frontier, need more time. A few months back, I felt overwhelmed with previews of Earthborne Rangers, Kinfire Chronicles and some others. Now I'm careful which youtube videos I watch, they just seem to exert pressure on me. At least STALKER has been delayed to October. (BTW the campaign is supposed to be 'only' 30 hours and it will have a skirmish mode, which I guess is random scenarios.)

I backed Silverwood Grove as I usually make a point of supporting local designers and publishers and the games are usually good, great or awesome. There has to be an exception and this is it - partway through the Kickstarter the focus was purely on fast fulfilment (it landed early) and they’d clearly given up realising they’d bitten off more than they could chew. The game was unplayable on arrival as the rules made no sense at all - they were completely unintelligible until the designer published some faqs. It was clearly the worst game I’d ever tried to play within a day and I offloaded it as fast as I could - this a fair and objective 1/10. The publisher here is really an artist first (their self designed games are very simple). The designer here is a first time designer and whilst I don’t know the background it’s obvious what happened here. Many great games from first timers were this bad once - the initial design is there and now it needs development and testing and shaping into a game that works well and is fun. It’s clear that they went straight to KS assuming this would take a couple of months rather than being the biggest chunk of the game creation process even if you don’t have asymmetric powers etc. COVID will have hit it (Victorian lockdowns etc) but this wasn’t self published and could have become fun, even good with proper gestation and development. The artist runs the publisher and the cutesy Aussie animals is his style (and has been pre Everdell to be fair). I feel for the designer as I think a game designer got the chance to have their game realised and published but without the support a new designer needs to ensure their game gets finished, and possibly it was rushed out faster than they wanted.

I kinda made it a rule to have less than 3 campaigns in my collection. I currently only have ISS, and some of the LotR LCG. I don't feel like I need more than that, and I am happy with what I have. I don't like to force games into life, if anything feels like it needs to be forced in then it probably doesn't have a spot with me in the long run. Do you think you'll focus less on new content in the aim of focusing ok what you love in your collection? I think that is an admirable thing, and something most people probably need to do themselves.

Some campaigns I've really enjoyed. Scythe:Rise of Fenris, Clank Legacy, even some of the Zombicde ones as well. It works if you have a tight group, and the games are known, and you enjoy it even if it wasn't a campaign. Pandemic was good, but it was online for me on TSS during lockdown. But I do have a few ones which is...hmmm no. I kickstarted Darkest Dungeon for example, and well, the production issues on that are well documented, but I do have the first half of it, but the idea of getting it to the table with people is somewhat daunting.

I understand your thoughts on campaign games. I think my view is becoming similar but maybe slightly more moderate. Some of my favorite experiences with board games were with campaigns - Gloomhaven and Oathsworn and Arkham LCG - but then a vast majority are mediocre and take up too much of your life as you said. So I’m trying to learn to be super picky with campaigns and definitely only get them after their first edition to hear from reviewers and see plays to know it’s worth the time.

I know you're not the biggest fan of BGG but I wonder if people can vote on different time lengths for their plays, or import the data from BG Stats to avoid publishers lying so often? So have the publishers claim of 60-90 minutes, but also an average time based on actual plays at various player counts visible for users to see?

@kombainasable

I think even if publishers have bias for writing how much game takes under perfect conditions, I so much more prefer that to trying to guess if a self-reported user even read the rules correctly, let alone if they corrected or not for non-game related interruptions. e.g. TI4 lists 4-8 h per game, but I have played as long as 14 h (5 player), but that was overnight with alcohol, etc. that 4-8 h estimate is a lot more closer to a *helpful* number than my factual data.

I watched some playthroughs of Unsettled and left quite underwhelmed with it. Especially for the price of the game it seemed so basic. My problem with campaign games is that they are too much of commitment most of the time and also the gameplay is usually quite subpar which to me is the most important thing. If the narrative is good it helps but I'd rather read a book, I play board game for the gameplay. Totally understandable conclusion. I just think there should be a disclaimer from every game reviewer when it comes to campaigns. Part of the struggle you all have as content creators is having to get through the campaign quickly to get the review out. So, in that sense, the urgency to "just get through it" will always be an issue.
@StevenH4684
@StevenH4684 3 месяца назад
I also think the issue is most people can't afford to have hundreds of games like how reviewers can have. I think sometimes reviewers forget the value of if I play through a $100 campaign game that takes me 100+ hrs to play that puts me at $1 an hour and very worth the money. The campaign fad never sat well with me. I love one-shot games that have a beginning, development and culmination over few hours. Campaigns do the same but over dozens of hours, which seems like a colossal waste of time honestly. I respect Gloomhaven, but Jaws of the Lion was a repetitive slog in the second half. Appropriate number of Mage Knight plays would at least give a different game each time. I know you hate both, but that's not the point. The only campaign structure I like is Arkham Horror LCG. 8 scenarios is the sweet spot and the whole experience is highly customizable. So campaign is the most common feature that puts games on my ignore list. The only good thing I heard is the incentive to play that box more than 1-2 times, which is something I guess. Still, often people can't finish those 100 hours for years, especially with full party of busy adults. I might give a chance to Pandemic Legacy or Tainted Grail, but judging on feedback, I would hate them after a couple of hours. P.S.: Also, turning a human into a filing cabinet operator is not a fun activity. I'm talking about 7th Continent and other games that try to cram vast videogame content into piles of cardboard.

It was literally just an account of what I'd recently played and this game was one of them and as it was terrible, I am allowed to state so and give my reasons for it. Are people allowed to talk about a game if 30 seconds of research reveals a game is obviously going to be good? Both sides of course being very subjective.
