Thank you for inviting us into your living room and taking us on your creating (and nature) adventures. Well done on your first quilt! For the Quilt Love one, I would advise the paper piecing if that is the pattern (it will make sewing small pieces together accurately much easier) but why not have a play seeing what it’s like without and maybe you’ll like that outcome. Have a lovely time at the river!

Enjoyable podcast, Selma. For your Ranunculus podcast I wonder if you - or viewers - might be able to articulate why it is such a successful pattern? It’s a phenomenon that I have so far resisted - a little bit of me is rebelling against making something that so many others have! But what am I missing? What does it have that other patterns don’t?

I finally made my first Ranunculus, having resisted thus far. I like the finished project but did not actually enjoy making it. I am not sure of the appeal except it is quick, uses minimal yarn for a sweater, and is a flattering fit for most body types. Curious to hear other’s opinions
@stevensdefenseacademyllc7898
@stevensdefenseacademyllc7898 2 месяца назад
I've made 5 Ranunculus sweaters so far. The appeal for me is that I like the final project consistently, even though I have made them with very different types of yarn. I love the simple lace around the neckline and the fit is flattering, especially with a skirt or dress. The fact that it is knit at a large gauge so therefore knits up fast and uses less yarn is certainly part of the appeal too!
@EllenaKirk
@EllenaKirk 2 месяца назад
😂 same! I don’t like the lace design, I’ve made a lovenote which seems quite similar but I prefer that lace 😁 I look forward to seeing what I’m missing 👍🏻

For the quilt you’re planning on making, would it be possible to sew strips together creating a fabric per se, and then cut blocks equal to the finished block size plus a half each both vertically and horizontally to allow for the seam allowance, cutting them on a 60 degree angle? Cutting mats often have angle markings and the Omnigrid 24”x 6.5” ruler has a 60 degree angle line.

Another wonderful podcast. Congrats on your finished quilt. As a long time quilter, I too don't like paper piecing. I did learn a new technique involving foundation paper piecing with freezer paper. The freezer paper I use can go through my printer so the design gets printed on the freezer paper (no tracing). The paper can be used many times and there's no paper mess or waste. I use the Gypsy Quilter applique freezer paper if you want to research it. I'm sure there are other brands as well. Good luck with the next quilt.

When you say pattern round-ups do you mean when you mention different patterns to us that are interesting as you've done before? If so I really like that. And for sure it would be fun to do a KAL with Canadian designers as the prompt. That was a really nice podcast. Love the videos up at the cottage. Deer flies are the worst. I swell up like a 🎈. Take good care. I look forward to the Ranunculus talk next time. I'm thinking of starting my 2nd one but this time a short sleeve version.

I watch knitting podcasts because I don’t have a group of knitters that I can join in person, nothing like that in the area where I live, we don’t even have a yarn store here in this area, but that doesn’t deter me from knitting. I have been knitting for close to 60 years now and being retired, I now call my knitting my “employment”. So thank you to you and to all the knitters who take their time to give us a community “to join” via knitting podcasts. I too have a huge stash, beyond my life experience as well. I would like to live to be 100 and perhaps I could use up most of my stash 🤔. I can only hope for the long life that I will need to use up all this yarn.

Hi Selma! Regarding paper piecing your quilt, I highly recommend giving it a try. It would be extremely difficult to get the angles exact otherwise and having the fabric on the bias, the fabric would stretch out of shape very easily. I paper pieced a complicated quilt once and traced my pattern on to tracing paper which made it very easy to tear away

Hi Selma. I’m a quilter and knitter. You can make a string quilt by sewing your strips onto a light weight interfacing. A good tutorial to watch on RU-vid is by Lori Holt called Sew Your Stash series #3 - 8” Scrappy Strings Block Tutorial. I’m sure there are others as well but she is a prolific quilter with lots of great designs and tips. Hope this helps.

consider making a string quilt, you can cut 12 inch muslin squares and sew fabric strips on the diagonal ( starting in the middle and working outward (stitch, fold iron) until the muslin sq is covered. these are later squared up and are wonderfully scrappy , especially when using random widths.

The string quilt using paper is a pain because you need to pull the paper off. You can sew the strips onto a light weight muslin so you don’t have to tear it off. Quilt squares will be a little heavier but a nice weight.

When you do your podcast about your Ranunculus sweaters, could you say how much ease there is between your bust size and each sweaters actual measurements, since you made a variety of sizes? I'm trying to figure out which size I want to make for myself. I'm in the process of making one right now in size 1, but I want the next two, which I have yarn for, to be a bit bigger. But I'm not sure how much ease I need for the look I want.
@littlebigknits
@littlebigknits 2 месяца назад
Since all sizes start the same way, it is easy to just add more raglan increases and make the decision as you go along. My gauge is not always on (or even measured I must admit) so I just make what feels right!! I think that is what I love about this pattern!! I just go with the flow and end up liking what comes out even if it wasn’t exactly how I envisioned it.

Hyvää syntymäpäivää! Whatever you do, do not give away your ryijy! And it’s a family heirloom! We have a few of those in my family as well. If you’re really stuck, let me know and we can figure something out. I’m sure there are museums in Finland that would love to have it. I’m also thinking about starting the “Look at My Holes” - I have yarn on the way and I’m certainly going to cast it on if I have time. I also would love a Chanel jacket and I actually suggested to Stephanie at Espace Tricot. I would love it if she would design one. With regard to mosquitoes in the Ottawa area: interesting fact - during the building of the Rideau Canal, the number one killer of workmen was malaria. So mosquitoes have always been a problem in that area. I also have an enormous stash. But I always tell people there are three parts to this craft: knitting, test knitting and yarn collecting. there is just somethings so wonderful about a new skein of yarn. It just makes me so happy.😊🇨🇦🇫🇮

This is my first time to watch your podcast. So enjoyable to see all your knits. I don't knit (never learned) but crochet a great deal. I like using fingering weight wool to create a more knit-like effect in crochet garments. It works although people think I am crazy because of the cost involved. It brings me joy so I will pay more. I am also a quilter. I used to teach. Remember that your stitches are unique and your signature on your fabric. You did a great job with you first quilt. I hope the second is a joy to create. String quilts are fun. Not really sure why you would need to foundation piece a string quilt. Once you start about 3 strips in the correct angle, it will take off from there. Enjoy the process! Have a great stay at the cottage. Sounds wonderful! 🧶

A pretty basic question, but how to do handle your ends, especially when adding a new ball/skein, with a looser gauge? I’m trying to make a different pattern (Tolsta tank) but it also is at a loose gauge and I’m stumbling when joining a new ball and not have it be really obvious in the finished fabric! Thank you, love the podcast.

I have answer to that question about mohair in summer and it is, guess what, the Ranunculus, lol. Knitted on 6 mm needles and in a single strand of standard silk mohair, I've mostly worn it in the evenings at the sea side over my top/t-shirt and it's been perfect. I don't think there is much of a difference between different mohair brands in this regard though, there are some which seem less fluffy with higher silk content (40% is as high as I've seen) but they are still very much as warm as the more fluffy ones, so nothing I'd wear in the heath and even in the evenings if the gauge was tighter it would have been too much for me. Loved the episode, thank you! And I'm very much looking forward to the Ranunculus special.

Your newest Ranunculus is very lovely! I look forward to an episode all about the Ranunculus as I've wanted to knit one forever, but haven't been a fan of the super over-sized design of it. Yours always seem to fit so nicely, though! Also, I believe you can use interfacing as a foundation for paper-pieced quilt designs as well. It helps to have a foundation to sew the strips on, otherwise the blocks will get skewed and not sew together nicely when you put your rows together. The quilt you showed was so beautiful and should be pretty easy to make.

Hola Selma! Me encanta tu podcast!

I love your quilt ! Unfortunately it entails 2 things that I despise more than anything sewing and ironing ! I feel the same way about my watercolor painting. Sometimes when I paint , I feel as if I am cheating on my knitting. Luckily for me , I have a dear friend who quilts. I have 2 beautiful quilts that she has made for me. she also made a quilt for each of my 6 Grandchildren.

Welcome to the wonderful world of quilting! String piecing is easy to do on fabric too, like linen. it just makes the quilt top heavier. I highly recommend the book The Art of Classic Quiltmaking by Harriet Hargraves. She is an excellent resource.

Hi Selma: lovely podcast as usual. I LOVE sewing on binding on a quilt, but I'm a long time hand stitcher. If more quilts with hand stitched bindings are in our future you might think about using a thimble. You could push the needle through at an angle a little easier I think. Using a thimble is a lot like personal preference in knitting needles. I've used many over the years and have found the leather ones more to my liking for binding. Just a thought. Also -- I think you were trying to think of the term "seam allowance." I am in awe of thinking about having knit 120+ sweaters. I have knit 5 but I'm learning! Take care.

I’ll see about a thimble. I’ve actually started to enjoy hand stitching far more than I expected!!

I admired your Ranunculus (while knitting the Nila Top) and thought: that yarn looks really similar to mine. Looked it up. We're knitting with the exact same shade of Tynn Line 🙂 I actually bought it 2 years ago and I was really on the fence till I started knitting with it. I don't love how marled it looks in the ball. But it sure does even out (no discernible marl) when knitted. Strangely, your complementary yarn didn't interfere with my ability to recognize the Tynn Line.

Hi there. I’m from Turkey and I have mine suspicion because of your name. But not quite sure since it’s kind of common. I would love to have coffee with you had you decide to travel to Turkey, either in Istanbul or Ankara. I always envy your coming together with Mega, Mel and other fellow knitters. So🤞. I hope I don’t sound like a stocker😅. Cheers

I am fairly new here, am enjoying the knitting discussion. I like knitting pattern roundups, seeing your UFOs and FOs, gives me ideas on what might be a good next project. Most interested in patterns you have experience knitting for specific seasons and you're experience with them and advice. I haven't sewn in years, would like to, but there is only so much time in the day. Thank you for podcasting, I like your cosmopolitan approach and positive appreciative attitude.

Love that you are starting to patch and quilt. Re your new quilt I would suggest you make a small version as directed to understand the technique before embarking on a big one going off without the pattern. You could use your sample as a place mat. I have been patch working since 1988, so have some experience. All the best.

I loved this episode! You made me chuckle when you were describing your issues with pronunciation. My eldest daughter, who will be 30 this year, pronounces things phonetically as well. In her teens a character in her book was named Phoebe. She pronounced it Pho-bee. She insisted that one day she will name her daughter Pho-bee! 😂

Thank you for a beautiful podcast, especially the serene lake video at the end. I live in Northern Virginia and have issues with moths as well. I have tried cedar chips, lavender packets, sticky squares. But I still get them. I have also put yarn in plastic containers that snap closed and used for scrapbooking, but moths got in there anyway. do you use large gallon size Ziploc bags? I worry that they would eat through those as well since they got in the plastic container. Thank you.

So far it has worked for me. I use the large freezer bags, in rubber made bins in a closet in a room that the door is often closed and that definitely works. If I leave knits or yarns sitting around without touching them for a long while they are more likely to be attacked

Selma, you are one of my heroines. I truly admire your "strategy" for your crafty life to have a strategy and then let go, let it happen, let things come to "life". I am most sure that you can be very focused too and get things done in tight schedules. And it is sooo good to make a change where possible...My crafts tought me that too, only after i went in a job with creativity i learned that it does not work for me under pressure. Long story short...i changed job and craft with maybe a similar impetus and "yogic" focus and let go attitude...thank you for sharing your thoughts on that, it warmed my heart😊

Loved the projects! I'm curious about whether your new quilt involves pieces cut and sewn together from fabric cut at a 60 degree angle, versus pieces whose grainline is straight and just the ends are cut at an angle. This will affect the sewing process, since even woven cotton has stretch when shown on the diagonal versus along the straight of grain.
@littlebigknits
@littlebigknits 2 месяца назад
Good point. They are cut along the grain so no bias there. They are sewn on a 60° angle so it should be ok.
