I know I'm late to the party on this, but I figured why not? I really liked this series and thought it would be fun to talk about. Patreon: / dafawfulizer Twitter: / dafawfulizer Discord: / discord
Tho the artstyle was the reason I can’t take some scenes seriously Like when Molly’s afraid of fire and hugs Giovanni It literally looking like some images clipping through each other
I think that's where the show's sense of humor comes from. Its origins as a casual RPG session among friends. It has an almost... improv feel to it. And fight scenes are more intense knowing that their outcomes were determined by dice rolls, not tropes and the drive to milk drama.
Honestly, as someone who experienced the original Anime Campaign story, Epithet Erased's future and potential have me eagerly awaiting a season 2 if it ever gets picked up. I honestly cannot wait to see how Jello and his team innovate on the original story and characters. at the very least, I need to have Dan Gansley back in my life at some point :'(
I love content like Epithet Erased. Where you can tell a relatively small team came together to make something they’re passionate about. My brothers and I have our own animated series on our channel, but it’s sort of a mix between Let’s Plays and serialized animation. Shows like Epithet Erased give us motivation :)
@@barrybend7189 Holy crap dude, that show is awesome! Only on episode 3 so far, but it’s definitely exactly the type of show I love watching on RU-vid. Thank you for telling me about it!
Taki yeet Molly and Sylvie are the only main characters that are minors. Molly being 12 and Sylvester 15. Giovanni just barely hits the of age mark with 19. Everyone else is in adult territory.
Taki yeet lol nah. Percy needs to be old enough to go to a police academy, and also be around long enough to be a proper officer. I’d say she’s probably in her early thirties. Ramsey appears to have a lifetime of fraud, so I’d put him in his late thirties. Zora’s a bit hard to pin down because we don’t know too much about her, but she’s definitely past her early twenties. Mera seems a bit young, so I’d put her in her early twenties, same with Indus. The Blasters seems probably around the same age as Giovanni, considering their low ranks. And the Vice Principals seem to be somewhere in their thirties, considering their looks and ranks. That’s mostly guessing, though, but they’re all CERTAINLY adults lmao
The thing that sets Epithets apart from other X-Men-eske powers in other stories is that they can be used differently depending on how they can be interpreted, which I love (that, and Molly is adorable ❤️)
For more explanation on what’s an Epithet; An Epithet can only be achieved after a race has 1 common language (they have a universal Esperanto instead of different languages), and after that anyone can get an epithet. An Epithet can be any word, COMMON slang (like Pog) or something that has a specific definition to it. This often leads to some people who have epithets (called Inscribed) not knowing their Epithet since they can be old cowboy slang that lost all records of it being used and other words like that. An Epithet is a word that is attached to someone’s soul that allows them to use powers that are related to and interpreted as the definition of said word. That explains how someone with the ability of Soup can build up pressure under their feet and launch them far away using soup, or how someone with the Epithet Shattered allows someone to summon broken glass from the floor. You don’t know immediately when you are born what Epithet you have. It’s more like a game of Hot and Cold. You are instinctively attracted to the word our Epithet is, and you keep looking at words similar to it until you find the correct word that’s your Epithet (it just sort of... clicks in your mind and you know that’s your Epithet). This is known as an epiphany. On the other hand, an Epitome is where, through large amounts of stress, you just use your Epithet out of survival instinct. This is the least likely to happen, though, so don’t plan on trying to do an epitome.
Awwww, hell yeah. This series is fantastic! I don't really feel like going into a huge rant all about how great it is, especially since the video does that just fine! All I'll say is, I reccomend it to... everyone!
I really like how the combat of Epithet Erased is a lot like Jojo where the powers have clear boundaries, but also those boundaries are so easy to fuck with that it ends up for some really creative uses of it. Each fight is more of a puzzle. The tabletop vibe I get from it is also really nice as well. I mean, when life gives you soup, might as well make fog out of it.
Not only is Ramsey one of the most relatable characters of all time but Mundie (The guy with the cat) is reminiscent of McGucket from Gravity Falls and that is in no way a bad thing.
Hey Dafawflizer, you were actually right when you said it was inspired by a table top rpg, specifically D&D, which is also what inspired the visual novel-esc animation & top down segments, to make it look like an actual game of D&D Also glad to see you talking about this show, one of my favorite RU-vidrs talking about one of my favorite shows ever, amazing 😁 Great video dude, see ya next video, have a great day, great year, & great life, see ya 👋🏻
It's actually based on a game called Anime Campaign (which I think was itself an adapted form of DnD), a game that Jello played with his friends on Twitch a while back, all of the characters on the show are from their campaigns. I watched an episode of it while season I of EE was still going (between the museum and Redwood Run arcs), but I heard that the videos were temporarily taken down to prevent spoilers for EE.
Oh, than... I guess replace every time I say D&D with Anime Campaign, I just thought it was D&D ‘cuz I heard it in a RU-vid documentary/interview of sorts by a youtuber called Daftpina on the show’s development
@@Br4x yeah...dnd is nowhere this crazy with character creation, oh and the rulebook is only 37 pages so yknow, helluva lot easier to get started, just pick whatever weapon you want, I gave a 12 year old girl the power to make vegans uncomfortable with her abilities revolving entirely around steaks 😅 she stole colonel Sanders 51 herbs and spices, and turned them into a teargas grenade! Honestly if you have a remote interest in TTRPGs i suggest trying it out, it is genuinely a really good system despite being a homebrew
Yes! I think this show is way underrated. I intend to get my friends to watch it when they have the chance, it's really good. Also, being inspired by a tabletop game... that actually explains a lot
I love this show, especially Giovanni. Its come to the point I spent £40 to ship the plushie to the uk. I will buy all the merch and would have watched it in vrv..... if it worked in the uk.... so hears hoping for series 2
I bought the Plush too. It looks so cute and I enjoy adding Plushies to my plush collection. I do hope the show gets a Season 2 sometime in the future (though JelloApocalypse is taking a break due to needing to heal his hands and not allowed to do any work while they are healing).
So, just to clarify, around 3:10 you’re right about this being based off something Jello did called Anime Campaign, which I believe is a modified rule set for DnD or something, but it’s been taken down to prevent Epithet Erased Spoilers
I first learned of this show when looking up pictures of Twisted Metal 4 Melvin. It showed a picture of the orange haired boy with glasses instead of Melvin.
Thanks for introducing me to this show, man. I loved it. Also the animation doesn’t bother me as it feels like a show made for RU-vid. After having most of the videos I watch involve avatars or OCs moving around and letting the script do most of the work, this show feels like it’s perfected that style.
I watched this show just because of this review and it is one of VERY few things that I have ever rewatched. I really hope the team behind it is able to create the planned 5 seasons, I'm checking in for announcement videos almost daily LOL
I had been wanting someone to review this because I love this show. I saw the first episode when it dropped on youtube & then the second & got impatient so I got a VRV account to watch ahead & still saw each episode as it released on youtube because I enjoyed it so much, I had to see it a second time. I also invited a friend over back when the first arc finished so that I could watch it over again with her & she enjoyed it as well. It was my obsession when it was releasing & I do hope that it gets a second season because it's so good & Jello took down the RP videos so I can't find out what happens next by listening to them which sucks because it would of been something nice to listen to as I shiny hunt in Pokemon. I don't want it outright spoiled for me but if I listened to it & heard it unfold naturally, I'd be curious & excited for how that can be implemented into the show. Oh well, just have to wait & see what happens in the future but from the sound of it, this was very draining for him & he even worked through a broken hand to get this done so I understand if it's going to be a little time until the second season comes out if it does happen.
it seems the youtube gods have blessed both of us by putting this in my recommended. You, in the fact you have a new subscriber, and me in the fact that you have a new subscriber.
This just goes to show how much you can do with good writing, characters, voice acting, music and design over traditional animation. I do think because its mainly a comedy the animation style worked. If it was primarily a drama tho Im not sure it wouldve been as effective. But overall well said!
Personally, I really like the animation in Epithet Erased cause of how they did it. It gives you more time to look at and enjoy the characters and backgrounds. It almost feels like a kid playing with their toys, making them bounce around and such. And that’s probably the most enjoyable part about this show, you can almost put it on any platform (audio story, comics, etc) and you can still get the same enjoyment form it
Yeah I enjoyed the show when it first premiered. Initially I was put off by the limited animation. But I saw past that and loved the characters and the humor. It’s ridiculously funny.
The writing and a lot of jokes work well with the animation. Also the main characters voices fit very well. It's well for cartoon that has smaller budget than most
One of the main reasons for the animation looking like it does, has to do with that, in fact, the show is based on a TTRPG campaign jello ran and livestreamed
Sometimes i just wish i had a button that would just spam a whole bunch of well made videos promoting a certain thing until its the only thing people see, and soon enough, we get more seasons, all of which will look beautiful
Out of curiosity why don’t you like him? I myself don’t like him with how he didn’t take the criticism of his infamous “Vote” video all that well. Also because said video had some poor judgements (the part where he blamed Trump for a synagogue shooting even though the shooter really hated Trump) and was kind of manipulative (in said video he was like “don’t vote for a color” and later admitted the video was pro Democrat).
Epithet is kinda like JoJo part 4 and 5,super power individuals with themed powers chasing after a power giving or taking maguffin, except JoJo is well,JoJo.
I think one of the things about this show that shows how good it is, is that the fans absolutely loved Giovanni’s Banzai Minions and they constantly asked Jello about their traits, lives, etc., and their personalities were completely made up by the voice actors. It got so bad that in the official QnA for the show, he had a question solely devoted to saying that the minions were completely adlibed, and to stop asking him about them.
Also epithet erased is at the same time a animated version and reboot of a ttrpg series that jello gm called anime campaign over on supriseroundrpg the 8 part show was taking down by jello and supriseround because epithet erased was coming epithet erased only follows session 1 of anime campaign so far and a new prologue the character that played in it Ramsey sylvie even Rick all were voiced by their players as those characters were player characters ramsey is will sylvie is majin and rick for the one yell at the end was jay from stabbyness all of them are from supriseround rpg on twitch jello has played on there aswell. Percival was also a player characters but they got a new voice actor for her mainly because arim a male
I am a new viewer watching this and while you did a good job review it some parts are context required for the viewer to understand such as your section on Indus as you mentioned a lot of things not everyone is privy about.
I think that a bit more emphasis needs to be placed on anime campaign, which I believe was a sort of first draft for epithet. It had a lot of the same characters and plot, and I’m under the impression that some of epithet is a direct rewrite of the stuff in anime campaign. Now, I’ve never watched anime campaign, and it’s not available to watch now, but I’ve heard a lot of the behind the scenes information, and this knowledge explains a lot of why epithet erased is the way that it is, like why we have the narration and the top-down view the way that we do. Epithet is great on its own, I’m pretty sure that the museum arc was written specifically for epithet without being in anime campaign, but this is still relevant info
Honestly this series feels a lot like animes like "My Hero Academia" where about 80% of Humans have developed a special ability called a "Quirk", or "Fire Force" where after a great catastrophe nearly destroyed the world, a huge number of whatever is left of the human population has some sort of Pyrokinetic ability, be it where they combusted into a monster, could control flames from a source, or could generate flames from themselves.
I think Molly is totally the most potentially powerful character. I mean like, she literally mind controlled a person and dumbed down *a sheep out of existence!!!!!*
@@justinl.994 Yeah, Jello mentioned it in a 12 hour long livestream he did that it would be super expensive, but that they were going to reach out to him to see if he would do it.
