Great looking table, and we liked the idea of using the glue as a epoxy dam. We made a table with an epoxy top, and found out the hard way about keeping bugs out of the stuff. Good thing that fly kept it's distance!

Beautiful! Suggestions for next time... Seal the wood first - many of your bubbles were from air coming out of the wood. Use a thin coat of clear epoxy to coat all the edges of the wood. Then, when you pour your colored epoxy, you will get many fewer bubbles. Use packing tape on your base - it will come off your project much easier. Just cover the whole thing with strips of tape. If the epoxy DOES stick, the tape will come off your wood with having to destroy the wood. Use a piece of cardboard to fill the underside. Cut it to the right size/shape, place a box or something like that as support under it, then you can use much less of the foamy stuff (or hot glue or caulking) to fill in the gaps around the edges of the cardboard. Also, if you use cardboard covered in packing tape, and hot glue to seal the edges, you can remove it once the epoxy cures. If your epoxy is thin and doesn't use very much opaque fillers, you could put a light inside! I agree with the other about the bark, it will likely come off. I like the look of the wood without the bark better as well. But, as I said, it did come out very beautiful. Maybe purple next time? :)

Very beautiful table! I am about to do a table from part of a trunk of a tree. My question is did you do anything to the bark or just left it natural? Does it peel off or anything like that. Many ppl don't keep the bark, but you did and I want to, so just want to know how to protect it. Please let me know your experience with leaving the bark.. Thanks
@WeekendBuilders
@WeekendBuilders 3 года назад
Hi Keja, Thanks!! We did nothing with the bark. The tree disc has been drying for 2 years so the bark is completely dehydrated and stays in place. We like this without bark more than without, like, you haha. suc6!!!
@kejajones231
@kejajones231 3 года назад
So does the wood have to dry out that long? Out how long should the wood dry out? The wood I'm getting just been cut off from a tree that was cut down 2 weeks ago
@toditron
@toditron 5 лет назад
If you first seal the wood before applying epoxy then the little holes you experienced will be greatly diminished (of course you will then need to sand a bit to get a good bond to the epoxy). Also, use mold release to keep base from sticking so much. But in the the end your product was quite nice. Well done!

Try using smoke to get those bubbles out. People will throw the ‘use a torch’ tip out there, but it’s not the heat that does it, it’s the co2. And not to promote myself, I made a video on it (the smoke bucket). Awesome project!

@WeekendBuilders

We didn't really pay attention to this pattern, this was because of the filling and the epoxy went down a bit. You can stir with a stick or you can use a heath gun to get a pattern. Check our other video Epoxy River Table, we used the heath gun there. Success in making your project 👌😁

before pouring resin on a live edge it is a good idea to make a small batch of epoxy and coat the edges with it so they become sealed and can't release bubbles during the "big" pour.

If we would do this project again, it would be completely different. Indeed you can tape the bottom. But what is also important is to brush the stump first with Epoxy so that the holes are closed.

We've worked and learned a lot this year with Epoxy. I'd probably level the top completely. The bark doesn't have to be removed because it was already dry. Then I would rub the top with a roller and the inside with epoxy with a brush. The real epoxy casting I'd do upside down. I'm thinking of maybe doing this project again, how would I do it now with this experience, would you find this interesting? Maybe I'm gonna put this question on instagram or people who like to see it.

I dont know. I kinda liked it with the epoxy lower, not flush. With some of the inside wood showing. To each his own, but I probably would have used wooden or plastic chisels to take out the foam on the bottom, to let light through also.

Thank you, this was our first Epoxy project so we had to try a little how everything works. Now we make a lot of nice Epoxy projects with other techniques haha

We used the material Epoxy, we put all the info in the description!

Nice project. Though with the benefit of hindsight I wonder if it wouldn't have been easier to glue or caulk the top of the piece to a piece of board and fill it with epoxy from the bottom. It seems like you ended up having to pry off your base to sand in either case.

We had thought of this but the disc was not level and we did not have the tools to make it level. So that is why we have chosen this way.
@web19designer
@web19designer 5 лет назад
It doesnt matter if its not level, use plenty of hot glue to glue the board with the disc,this will fill all gaps and prevent the epoxy from leaking out. This way you will probably need less than 1/4 the epoxy you used and no filler is needed(BOTTOM CAN BE LEFT HOLLOW). The bark should also be treated or it will peel off in time. Use epoxy to fill all cracks on the top or consider a layer of epoxy on the entire surface for that glassy look. Good project but could have been executed much simpler

Joe Hot glue instead of silicone caulk? You must work much faster than I if you could get that done quickly enough to get that to adhere properly, but I agree in theory. At least he ended up with a neat table out of it and what first time project isn't a learning experience?

Hi Piccolo, yeah this was a big learning for us haha!

It would be more good looking if you add another layer of epoxy covering the whole top to get a smooth surface
@WeekendBuilders
@WeekendBuilders 5 лет назад
We have thought about that, but since it was our first project with epoxy we did it this way. But thanks for the tip😉

Hoeveel Epoxy heb je hiervoor gebruikt ?
@WeekendBuilders
@WeekendBuilders 3 года назад
Heel goeie vraag, best wel veel eigenlijk. Het was ons eerste Epoxy project! Als ik het nu over moest doen, zou ik hem recht laten zagen en op zijn kop gieten, dan heb je helemaal niet zoveel nodig.

Couldn't you make the stool a lil thinner and use lesser epoxy?
@WeekendBuilders

The company where we bought the wood didn't want cut it in half to prevent damage to the disk. It was our first time with Epoxy and we didn't know how much epoxy we need to use. So next time we use less 😉
