Ok, so I might have done it again. Paint an awesome mini, create an awesome scene to put it in, and promptly ruin it with a water effects pour that reacts badly to something....Did I give up? Or did I manage to save this one?

Random thought about making this more complicated... and even a bit more cool. Drill out a hole above the rat, say a couple centimeters across. Use a bit of granny grating to create a grill or grate in the hole. Put a light source above the grate (maybe cool light, like moonlight) to shine down and illuminate the interior, casting shadows through the grate. Otherwise, really cool.

Looks like you added too much alcohol solvent to the second layer. As the epoxy cured the crosslinking draws the molecules closer together and spaces between the polymer molecules became smaller and it had less ability to hold the extra solvent, forcing it to precipitate as tiny droplets that defract light and look white. This is why it was clear at first and then went white as it cured. Adding less solvent, that doesn't 'fill' the spaces between the cured epoxy molecules, would result in transparent material as the solvent won't undergo a phase change to form a droplet that will defract light. You might also get a cleaer result on the last pour if you added less alcohol and other solvents to the epoxy, perhaps work on adding only the absolute minimum needed to deliver your pigment.

A tip to make the oil washes cure faster: get some Gamblin Galkyd Lite medium. It's got to be the Lite version of it because the Galkyd Lite is very thin, almost like water. Add a little bit of it to your oil washes, you'll need to experiment to find the right ratio but once you do the washes will cure in 12-24 hours. If you want to try making your own fast drying washes then pick up some Lukas Studio Oil paints (this is the student line of oil paint, the professional is called Lukas 1865), anyhow thin the paint down with oil paint thinner (I use Gamblin Gamsol because it's eco-friendly and less toxic then mineral spirits or regular paint thinner) to a wash consistency and use, the wash will be completely cured in 24 hours, if not sooner. Lukas uses beeswax in their paints which make them quick drying.
@James-mb6sr
@James-mb6sr 3 года назад
I love this result. You mentioned "thin bricks" for the inner layer and I've done such things by first setting my boundaries (H x W x L) on any thicker piece of XPS, then carving my stone or brick the good old fashion way. You know, with a pencil :) The trick comes when you get that Proxon and plane down right behind your carving job and you get a thin, sometimes very flexible, sheet of bricks you can wrap around or in this case, inside the pipe. Quick and dirty facade.

Most artists oils are made for highly absorbant canvases, so they contain extra linseed oil. Unfortunately when applied to plastic or resin, which doesn't absorb the oil, they take a hell of a long time to dry. Some companies (abetlung 502 is the example I know) produce mini-specific oils, and they work wonders, without the crazy drying time
@JMcomicsHd

@NorthlightMiniatures
@NorthlightMiniatures 3 года назад
If you don't know, you can buy a product called Liquin, that will increase the drying time for oil paints over five times faster. Completely safe to use, the oils might get a slight pastel color, but you won't notice it. You should also buy Abteilung502, those oil paints are made for miniature painting and have much less linseed oil in it, that way you can paint your mini during breakfast and before dinner it's completely dry. If you want to experiement further, use enamel washes and filters, they give some great and easy effects too!

Nice job saving it. I'm happy it was successful, because it looks so good :D I'm pretty much a total noob to resin (only info from watching resin crafts etc.) but I would guess the issue with the 1. attempt wasn't as much the alcohol thinner (since 1. layer looked good) but you possibly rushed the 2. one since you were on a timer and it didn't sit well with them. But it could have been a shitty batch. Doesn't matter since we got to see it finished :D

It shows that eveybody makes mistakes and that you can still salvage stuff even when it goes wrong (and in some cases the it might even be a 'happy little accident', like on this build :) ) Awesome build and video as always! Easy Wood Grain suggestion. When creating items out of real wood, you can easily add the weathered, splintered texture you want by using an inexpensive, 2" to 4" BRASS wire wheel in a power drill, or on a bench grinder if you have one. Brass is soft and will not gouge and damage the wood as badly as a steel one would. I place my drill in my vise, turn it on, and then run the wood against the brass wheel in the direction of the wood grain. This removes the softer wood in the grain and leaves the harder wood, just as would happen in real life. By varying the pressure and number of passes, you can easily simulate any amount of wear. Whether light, as if it is new, rough lumber, to old, splintered wood that has been exposed to many years of wind and weather. When you are done, use your favorite washes and tints to give it the appropriate appearance for your project. Just remember that water-based washes may cause the wood to warp, which can actually be beneficial if that is needed. Easy, peasy, lemon squeezy. :) As an added benefit, the rough wood actually accepts glue better and creates a much stronger bond...

Why couldn't you leave him alone for the project? Because you knew he was da bomb! I'll shut up now. I will say though, when you are making wood grain and you want it to be more visible, grab a torch and burn it a bit. You can then take steel wool or a Scotch Brite pad to it and knock the top off leaving the burn in the grain. It's an old cabinet maker trick for staining wood and having the grain be visible.

it turned out pretty great! :D A small dim LED light behind that grate would look awesome! Maybe one that flickers like a flame, and have it obscured, like some strange light is coming from inside the pipe somewhere :D

I heard a good explanation as to why people dislike monopose GW figures: you can't customize them unless you're brave enough to start cutting things up which is intimidating when you've spent good money on it. What I love about episodes like this is they encourage people to take those kinds of creative risks by showing that you can always learn/adjust when things don't work.

Did you leave the first layer of epoxy to totally cure before adding the new mixed up stuff on top? Time is everything with epoxy you can't just go back couple muns and add to it! The heat it also produces for the curing time etc all has to be exact! But I think everyone has had this experience it only makes us better modellers! I'd recommend vallejos water Diorama effects for these kind of jobs to epoxy! It looks alot nicer and you can won't have any bother with heat curing

Yo, turned out really khuul, only thing - not to critisze (i know you were in stress saving the project), but I really miss the log you intended to put there in the first attempt, made it more living and gave more for the eyes to chew on (with the barrels being obscured by the muddy waters ;) ). But nice work! Keep it up

Fantastic diorama idea. Well painted whatever you say. And the way you brought it back from disaster was inspiring. All in all an excelent video. All the best.

Easy solution for bricks on the walls: - cut bricks to 1-2mm thickness - glue them on a long strip of paper - glue the paper inside the tube

Low cost product has unreliable result! Dude, that is an excellent piece - great save! Sewer water shouldn't be clear, so the brownish tint of the final mix is perfect. Could the problem have been a reaction with whatever you thin the oils with? Brent may know.

You mentioned the long drying time of oil washes being an issue - try the Fast Drying Thinner (from Abteilung 502), it speeds up the work by more than a bit.

There needs to be an Eye of the Tiger type song for crafting/mini painting videos- I was so gutted when I saw the epoxy go totally screwball on you only to be elated by your dogged determination not to let that amazing build & mini go to waste :) I'm glad you've found a new joy in painting cos that passion is wonderful to see. Keep up the great gnarly ratmen builds!!
