EPOXY FREE RESIN REVIEW/EXPERIMENT: Which Epoxy Free Resin Takes the Fewest Coats?

Hi guys! Today I will be using two epoxy free resin products to determine which resin requires the fewest amount of coats. Both products are excellent quality, there is no doubt about that. My hang up was the amount of coats needed to complete a glitter tumbler.
I used similar cuts of chunky glitter for both tumblers, and used transfers from Southern Belle Glitter to complete my Suzanna Floral Leopards (named after the amazing Suzanna Renaud from Glamour Tribe Customs). The number of coats was close! Watch to find out who won, and thank you so much for watching!

*** Side note/Observation*** I definitely concede the fact that when you think about the actual time actively working on a tumbler, the epoxy free tumblers take less “working” time. In the time that I apply one coat of epoxy, I can apply 10-15 coats of an epoxy free product. I just love all the additives, depth, and molds that I can make/achieve with epoxy, but I will continue to play with these epoxy free products and try and post some epoxy free tutorials for my Epoxy Free fam! ❤️

Can you clarify something for me. You said that in the it takes to apply 1 coat of epoxy, you can apply 10-15 coats of the epoxy free but don’t you have to wait a few hours with the epoxy free before applying more coats? Are you talking about doing multiple tumblers at a time? I’m a little confused. The JustResin looks more shinier than BT. Good review
@VMDDesigns
@VMDDesigns 2 года назад
@@stephanied8028 I was referring to the actual “work time.” Not the cure times. It may take a few days to make a tumbler, but the actual work time on said tumbler is only a few hours. So not including cure times, you spend less “work time” applying the epoxy free resin on your tumblers.
@PWells23
@PWells23 2 года назад
a few tips with crystalac ... Let dry 4 hours between each layer you do NOT have to remove your tape each time you can keep it on ☺ when you applied your GG to seal you smoosh glitter again after 1 hour then let it dry that additional hour then its ready for BT. Smooshing your glitter by rolling in parchment on a hard surface or using a brayer roller is more effective . also sanding BT with 400grit sand paper is recommended to get that smoothness quicker and it'll be smoother. Also we can send our cups out in FIVE days and FULL CURE is 30 days.

Good morning. Awesome job and a very fair review. We recommend that folks give their cups 3 to 5 days before shipping out the finished cups or other projects. And include care instructions to inform their customers to treat the cups gently while our products have time to harden up. The smell from the Watercoat product are solvents being released or flashing off. Just like with epoxy, the thicker the coating, the more solvents needed to coalesce and flash-off in order to dry properly. Don't sniff them! Dorinda and I would love to provide a thicker product; the problem is having to add hazardous solvents, or a thickining agent that in turn would add hours and even days to the cup being usable. Just to end up with the same end film on the cup after the thickener evaporates out. So we went with dry quicker, hardens faster, and usable sooner. Thank you again for the review. You did an amazing job.

This here is why Crystalac users are brand loyal. ☝️ I was coming to answer the question on how soon you can pack and ship a Britetone tumbler, but see David already answered. Aside from making awesome products, David and Dorinda spend COUNTLESS hours educating and explaining the pros, cons, ins, outs, and safety of top coats. I genuinely would not be where I am today without them. Thank you for the amazing products and for being such amazing people! ❤ #CrystalacUser4Life And thank you, Vanessa, for all the great tutorials and honest reviews. Y'all rock!!
@brandybeam5683

Another crystalac user here. Great review. You can seal your glitter more than once with the glitter glue to seal some of the glitter crevices and you will end up using less layers of BT. Sanding every 4 coats (Usually wait 6-8 coats after glitter just to be careful i don't hit the glitter) and you can take them off the turner 45 min -1 hr after applying. Which means you can work on more cups at a time. If you have 4 turners, you can get between 12-16 cups coated in a 4 hour period. So they do take longer because of the coats, but you will have more cups done. Also, the flippin' awesome paints from Crystalac are amazing.

I strictly use crystalac products and I LOVE them. I read a few suggestions on sanding.. I have 4 layers on a chunky cup right now and it’s almost ready for decals I might put another layer on but it really doesn’t need it. it does taking some time to get used to but I have found that smooshing and a couple extra layers of glitter glue helps a ton! As for shipping.. I typically wait 5 days but I have shipped to a friend after 2 days and it was fine. .

I've used Crystalac products for close to 2 years, and love it! I love being able to do it without PPE, indoors, and love the variety of paints, pigments, etc that all work together. After 1 hour, I can take it off the turner and put another cup on. I can do it between commercial breaks on TV, or between chores, or on breaks from my full-time job. It is "different", but I'm extremely allergic/reactive to epoxy and simply cannot use it without skin reactions even with full extreme PPE. The "cure" time for Crystalac is kind of a myth, it will continue to "cure" or dry, but after a few days (depending on climate, quality of application), but handled gently it can be used after 5-7 days, with the usual rules of handwashing, no dishwasher, etc. I love that you tried these products and enjoy your artistry.

Did you know there is a new epoxy free alternative on the market. It's called Hyperion and there are distributors in the US Aus and Canada. It's waterbased like BT, but it's an acrylic hybrid so it's a lot more hard wearing, but the biggest benefits are 2hours drying time, full cure in 10 days, applies thicker so less coat require (can finish a chunky glitter tumbler in 6 coats) aaaannnnddd it doesn't yellow over white glitter. You should check it out 👌

I don't think I'd make the switch, however, because I just love playing with molds, micas and inks! I'm also not patient enough -- just ordered Artistry Epoxy 1:1 Fast Set because it can be used for all layers lol!

Chrystalac seems to always need 4 hours, I don't know anyone that uses 3 hours. Also, it's a great idea to use gloves when applying even epoxy alternatives, per the MSDS sheet recommendations. Proper ventilation is also still recommended. A mask when sanding. Remember, these are still chemicals and caution should be used with both.

Loved this and how the cups came out but, that's tooooooo many coats to do on just one tumbler. When you add those coats up, you could've already made 2 to 4 tumblers just from those additional layers. Aint nobody got time for that!! 😂 I'd rather stick with my epoxy, the doors open, and a fan blowing. I'm like you I have the patience of a gnat and that's one to many layers for my liking 😂😂 Love your personality, so much like mine!! Love it!

Great video and very fair review of both products. Personally love Crystalac and I was ALMOST convinced to try the watercote until you said it smelled after it dried. Then I was like ...nope, that's solvents giving off that smell. So, I thank you for being thorough. Now....smooth after only 7 coats of brite tone on chunky glitter!!!! It usually takes me 9 coats. I'm a horrible smoosher

What a wonderful tutorial! However, I don't know how tumbler makers could get their tumblers out to their customers in any sort of decent time frame with having that many coats! I'm so thankful I don't have an epoxy allergy (so far) --I'm a tad bit impatient, so.....12 coats per cup would have me over the edge. It is definitely a beautifully shiny cup though. Thank you for your honest review! Looking forward to seeing how the cup smells in a few days! #notacupsnifferbutiknowsome

Brite tone user here! I quote 4-8 weeks but it doesn’t take me nearly that long. 12 coats sounds like a lot but when you think about how quick it takes to apply a coat, it really isn’t all that bad. No complaints from any customers here on the time frame!

You really don’t need to count the coats except when sanding and even that is approximate. I’ve never used epoxy but Crystalac has been around for 40+ years and non-toxic. They didn’t start as a tumbler making company but has been used in painting guitars for years. I am a Crystalac user (Brite Tone) and have been using it for approximately a year now. I was a former epoxy user but severe reactions stopped that. I did all of the comparison as well when I switched just to make sure that I wasn't getting myself into a price bracket that my area would not tolerate and put me out of my cup making. The price is really comparable. I have figured out per coat amounts for my usage and honestly, it may even be a little cheaper. When I do the breakdown of my supplies on every order (just to make sure I'm making a decent profit) my cost for Crystalac is never as high as it had been for the epoxy. Get a small pint and give it a try - you will love it - P.S. I have never had an odor come from any of the products from Crystalac - can't say about the WaterCoat because I've never used it. Good luck and i hope you choose the safer nontoxic route!

Girl you are a hoot. I absolutely love watching your videos. They turned out Beautiful but, I do believe the water coat one is shinier. Question can you do all the same techniques we can with epoxy.... like with inks, etc?
@VMDDesigns
@VMDDesigns 2 года назад
You can do some; like specific micas, glitters, and paints. (I know Crystalac has some mediums that you can use with epoxy free.) But epoxy is definitely more versatile with additives.

As awesome as it is to have products available that you don’t have to wear PPE for I would def lose my patience with all those layers. I have a cup sitting in my work space right now that’s had about 5 layers and needs one more and I’ve been putting it off bc I’m over it lol Ok I commented a little too soon… the time per layer application of epoxy is def the thing that puts me off working on a cup… if I didn’t already have so much invested in my resin stuff I might give one of those products a try
@VMDDesigns
@VMDDesigns 2 года назад
This! I definitely concede the fact that when you think about the actual time actively working on a tumbler, the epoxy free tumblers take less “working” time. In the time that I apply one coat of epoxy, I can apply 10-15 coats of an epoxy free product. My true hang up is you can do all the cool things with epoxy free that you can do with epoxy (paints, molds, micas, etc.) You can do some things, but not as much as you can with epoxy. If I could, I would definitely think about switching up!

I don't understand how the britetone/watercote is quicker because I can apply epoxy after 3-4 hours and don't need 7-15 coats. I can also send a cup out 3-4 days after my last coat. so it seems it takes longer to use the epoxy free options. I understand *WHY* someone would want to do this but time wise... it seems like it takes longer. am I missing something?

Between epoxy and the epoxy free? I would say, even after all the layers, the layers of epoxy free, equals one “flood coat” of epoxy.
