In this session Shane, the master of epoxy inlays will be sharing everything there is to know to creating an epoxy inlay project. He’ll show us how he brings a design into the software, and the toolpath setup for a typical epoxy project. Shane will then let us in on the practicalities involved with pouring and curing resin.

Wow, I must have been living under a rock but I've never seen this style of carving before. Utterly blown away. And I admire your honesty and modesty with your lack of CAD terminology. It can get a bit overwhelming. I live in a world of thingies and wotsits and widgets, so it's good to know others don't always have the right terminology either. But you create masterpieces.

Really nice. You v-Carved first then used the end mill. Does that give different results than the reverse?
@vectric
@vectric 3 года назад
Hello John... I suspect it is because clearing with an endmill first might cause some chipping or loss of small islands that should be there for the VBit. If you use the VBit first then it will avoid this.
@shaneshardwood6321
@shaneshardwood6321 3 года назад
The V-carve goes so much better when it cuts with pressure all the way around it, much less chipping. Thanks for the question, John!

HI. First, thanks so much for this video. Excellent information. I currently use MAS counter top epoxy because I am cheap and its not expensive and it works well for individual colors separated by wood. However when I use it where the colors are touching, because it gets hot while curing, the colors tend to bleed into each other a little. Leaving a "not so" crisp/clear separation of colors. You mentioned using West Systems (which is rather expensive). Where do you get it and how can I save money on it? Or, is there some other product I could use?
@shaneshardwood6321
@shaneshardwood6321 3 года назад
Are you waiting for the epoxy to cure before pouring the other color? I have never heard of epoxy being able to bleed into cured epoxy of any brand. On Amazon you can buy a bundle for about $150 that will give you a gallon of the resin (105) and the appropriate size container of the slow cure that I use (206).

do you fill the pockets just to the top or slightly overfill? How much shrinkage / settling do you get from that brand of epoxy as it cures?

I overpour like crazy. If you look at the one on my IG page I did for the CEO of Traeger Grills, it goes from looking like a complete donkey show to a work of art once all that extra epoxy gets taken off. I have never experienced any shrinkage at all, well, not with epoxy! LOL Seriously never have noticed it at all and I have done over 400 of these. Thanks so much for the questions, Michael!

For multiple colors touching each other you said “so i figured out a way to overlap vectors” (?), do you use the offset tool on each color vector area? What values do you use? What depth facing value do you use at the end so that it does go too deep and expose the bottom color or wood in between touching colors?
