Great video - so much learning. Thanks to Todd and Bekki at the UGM for sharing the link for this video that I finally got to watch. Several key learnings that were helpful. The use of the two rail sweep was a good learning tool for me. The use of the angled zero plane is something I have been searching for for quite awhile. Ever since Todd discussed a "wonky/wobbly zero plane" in his spoon project. He hinted at making a video on how this was done at the time, but when asked at the UGM mentioned this is still on his possible future to do list. The concept of first creating an object with the opposite angle (from actual desired angle) on one side, then creating a copy to the other side to achieve the desired angle and then using the subtract mode to ensure the object was there but invisible, "Mind Blown!" If I hadn't seen this video and I did this accidentally I would have been scratching my head and writing to support, what happened - the component tree shows a component but I can't see it. Then add the zero plane on each side to get back material that adding a zero plane with negative height on the one side took away. Would not have understood the Zero plane was reducing my model thickness by the negative value, if this had not been pointed out. Then cropping the zero plane to get rid of the pixels. So much - so quick and real learning points kind of glossed over. I highly encourage Vectric to do a tips and tricks video on different uses of the zero plane with practical application, similar to Todd's spoon and this guitar neck. I am sure there are many others. It is not just a tool to allow dishes/recesses to be cut cleanly - which is what I believed when starting my journey to learn about zero planes. I know I am only scratching the surface and have so much more to learn on this - please teach me.

Thank you, you answered my dilemma without even knowing it. I've been trying to figure out why my toolpaths kept leaving a ridge along the sides of my neck and it was driving me crazy. I just needed to set an offset on the finish toolpath to let the tool reach all the way to the zero plane. As a trained luthier myself I could technically do all this by hand, but I can't make a living doing ten guitars a year so having this done in Aspire is really going to help speed things along. Also for not really having any formal training its not a bad attempt. Keep on keeping on.

The ability to cut past zero in a two sided job with Aspire v9 is a game changer for the projects you can create that have two sides! It did take a quite bit of research to create the guitar neck and there is definitely more i could learn, I learnt a lot and had fun making it, and I'm glad that others like yourself are benefiting from this tutorial too! I very much appreciate the effort, knowledge and passion that went into this video. I would love to know how to model a hand stop and a tall heel like the ones on a Gibson style guitar and banjo. THAT is the tricky part... thank you so much for everything you do!

The top of the frets probably are about 1/16 wide but the cuts for the tangs of the frets are there about .021-.022 thousands wide and roughly 1/16th deep.

Thanks - I can now use the software far more efficiently and I understand the process... In terms of the cutting, as opposed to the modelling , I noticed your set up was 3" deep, whereas the most common approach would be to use a blank of ~ 3/4" already scarfed . Also would you through 3" cut with a 1/8" ball nose ? As a follow on could there be a video on how to machine this model in the most efficient way please? Thanks again for your clearly explained tute.

hey there, im having a problem with the fretboard radius. im doing everything exactly the same as the video, yet for some reason; my fretboard radius is coming out wrong. im getting 9.5 at the last frets, but the radius compounds up to 7.25 at the nut. any idea why? Thanks!

This was a very helpful tutorial video that answers a lot of questions for me on how to approach a guitar neck, however the neck was for an electric guitar. The heel where it mates to the guitar is much simpler than one for an acoustic guitar. So I've still got the dilemma of figuring out how to get the heel of the neck to work out for an acoustic guitar (which is more complex and taller). Is it possible to make another video or append this one to include this extra complex step?

Great video Indeed, thank you. Roy, I use to rout archtop necks with Aspire and the only way I figured it out is to work with a 45mm thick neck blank, that includes headstock, the heel start, (glueing other half after, no big deal), tenon AND 4° overall angle. I then cut the whole shape in one go (1 roughing and 1 finishing actually, same ball nose tool). But I created the 3D model in Rhino 4, then imported it in Aspire. I'm afraid the method shown on this video cannot deal with 4 or 4,5° neck angle related to the tenon. Ball nose DOES NOT make a perfectly smooth tenon though, many fiting adjustments to do, but still a big time saver. So far, it's the only way I found...

Great video. I'm building a bunch of fan fret guitars that have a bunch of additional challenges. Do you have any videos showing a similar process with a full acoustic neck? I've been failing at modeling it for 2 years.

If I want to do inlays in the fretboard that follows the radius, could I use the "project toolpath onto 3d model aswell"? I am currently using Vcarve Pro but if I'm able to do a complete Les Paul-style fretboard in Aspire I'll consider upgrade my program 🙂

Hello and thanks for the question. Yes you could to a point, and once the radius for the surface was too much then you would need to compensate for that. I don't think fretboard are all that curved... I would give it a try on a test piece. :)

Is there a way to do the 2 rail sweep (to make a fretboard radius) in Vectric Vcarve pro? Or do I need to get Aspire?

Hello Victor... Yes in order to create the 2 rail sweep you will need Aspire. Depending on how complicated a shape you are looking for you might consider digging into the moulding toolpath... it might help.

Hi. Good video! Thank you! Im trying to use Rhino to draw a guitar neck, Tele, Strat styles. I have a dout how to make the link between the neck and headstock in front (top of the neck) using Aspire, because is not symmetrical - Teles, Strat models). Cheers!

Dear Sir i am trying to make a telecaster neck using your video. i am trying to do it horzionally but having trouble with the nodes to split the model in half equally.it goes down one side of the neck part way and the other side goes all the way around the head stock any help would be greatly appecrated .

What material thickness was originally used in the material setup? I'm pretty sure you can't input zero for thickness, so I was wondering if they used an arbitrary thickness of .001" or something.

Hello Coss and thank you for the comment. I suspect he used a know thickness of material he had or had used in the past. Once the design is complete or you have a better idea of what you are going to need for material... then you can update it. Hope that helps.

Is there a possibility in Aspire to make a curved slot for the truss rod? (Vintage style single action rod needs a slight curved slot) Would like to know if it’s possible before purchasing 😊

Went to Vectric website and can not find Tips and Tricks -Vectric user group 2017 to get tutorial files. Where are the tutorial files located. Thanks for the video. It is nice to see Aspire can create these 3D shapes. I am usually using other programs to create 3D files and then import into Aspire. More of these related to guitar would be a great help. Thanks

Dear Sir, to add to my other comment the only thing I am changing on a stock model is I am making the neck 2" wide at the nut area and I am fading the width to the headstock, and my stock is 3/4" thick and the model is to be about .740 thick. THANK YOU AGAIN
