In this project my son and I build a new butcher block surface for a coffee table. We used a neon sign transformer to burn the Lichtenberg traces, then drilled around 400 0.3mm holes for fiber optic cables. We cast the top in 1/4" of epoxy.

This table arrived well packaged and on time. ru-vid.comUgkxn94T8Mu1iMnsLCMNOI9srXSsLkI4JXKW Like another reviewer advised, I pulled everything out and made sure everything was included (everything was!). I built it alone and it took me about an hour. The color is great and for the price the lift part works well. As others have mentioned, it’s not the smoothest opening/closing, but it works. The screws do show, but I plan to order white sticker covers if that bothers us too much. Really happy with this table! UPDATE: it’s been over a year since we got this coffee table and we still love it! It gets HEAVY use as our dining table, foot rest, and school desk. Over time, the opening and closing mechanism has gotten smoother. I added a new photo with the white screw cover stickers. They blend in perfectly and make it look a little cleaner. 100% recommend!!!

I am completely in love with this. I have always loved the lightning look, but you definitely made a huge upgrade with the fiber optics!! I will be making one. Thank you for sharing

I hope for your sake you didn't attempt it. The danger is not worth the risk due to insane voltage. So far 34 people died trying this thing

These fractal burns terrify me. There have been a lot of people who have died from this technique. One mistake and that's it.
@MattVerley

You're right...using high voltage to do anything carries quite a few risks. However, I doubt you'll find anybody who has been injured or killed who was using a power supply with a current limiting ballast (as I am doing). Far too many people are attempting this with un-ballasted transformers, and yes...one mistake could easily kill you. But I'd like to also add this: we live a life filled with risk. There are quite a few activities that we do where one mistake could result in death. I'm a pilot; when I'm flying my airplane, one mistake could kill me and my passengers. I'm also a firefighter. One mistake could kill me, my patients, or other firefighters. The goal isn't to avoid risk, it is to proactively manage it to limit potential consequences.

What would you estimate the total cost of materials set you back? Absolutely in love with this table have all the tools skills and time I would just love a rough idea on cost of materials.

A little late to the party but what I have learned after doing some of these types of fractal burns is to brush on the epoxy in the burned areas, and let it dry, to seal them from off gassing into the epoxy pour.

You know i spent hours and hours doing that fiber optic light stuff to a ceiling in a retirement home and after all the work when hanging the piece to the ceiling the rafter i was mounting it to was rotted by termites apparently and the damn thing fell 20 feet to the ground. Broke every strand.. not to mention the rest of the ceiling came down with it.. tried to blame it on me but luckily i was able to see the active termite nest and took pictures so i got out of the hot water. But was a hit to the heart watching the thing i spent hours and hours on get destroyed. Lol.

What if ... You purchase (eh, I mean - get a sponsor) a big-screen HDTV (1080p is probably more practical - but 4k devices have also become more affordable) & make it into a TABLE with an epoxied top. Connect a small, LINUX based computer to the underside to drive the video & you will have the makings of a table that will blow people's mind. Run it in stealth mode with a wood-grain picture initially & then have it slide-show to more and more exotic patterns & eventually moving image clips like water over rocks, lava, etc. Quantum-dot screens have stunning color curves & several companies make them in affordable price ranges.

I know this videos a year old so don't know if you answer comments but oh have I got questions! First is why is a fiber optic light kit cheaper the more lights it has?

I had a tutorial on how to do this, but youtube removed it and issued me a "strike" for encouraging dangerous behavior. Sorry...no tutorial to point you toward! Basically, it is a neon sign transformer with a ballast (for safety) and a variac.

It's called wood fracking and it's extremely dangerous. There are videos here on YT warning about the dangers of doing it. Or try googling it.

What size neon transformer did you use? It looked a bit energetic for a neon transformer. It also looked like you had a VARIAC, good choice. Great finished project.

Excellent Video guys. Really neat project. I am curious to know, if you had to do it all over again. Is there something different you would’ve used? For any part of it. Lighting, epoxy, etc. thanks in advance.

Nice project! I've been doing this burning for since years now. I've found that if after you're done burning, wet the rest of the top with the solution, you won't get those lighter, 'unwet' areas. It's be all the same. Great job!!

Great job, you should have wiped the whole table down with salt water so the wood would have stained evenly.

I am working on a table similar to this with the holes in it. I wondered if you had the drill size? Also wondered if you would share the print stuff for the holder so I can get one printed as I got one of the same kits

It would be cool to use the hot glue melting as a part of the effect, not for all of them but just some.

@MattVerley

I had a video detailing the differences between a higher current lower voltage MOT source, and a couple of neon sign transformers, but youtube took it down saying that I was promoting a dangerous activity :( But...I HIGHLY recommend using a ballasted neon sign transformer at 15kv. The results are better, and the 30mA ballast is signifintly safer than an un-ballasted MOT.
