Holy mother of god, this is one of the best travel video that I've ever seen on RU-vid. Just capture the essence of the place, and no "cinematic" bullcrap that plague RU-vid (ie: excessive use of slow motion, overuse of fancy camera movement, and uneven cut-to-cut editing). Feels very personal yet people still can enjoy it, like a movie from a masterful auteur. The fact that this video taken with a literally pocketable device blown my mind, too.
5 years ago those “bullcrap” were literally the pinnacle of travel vlogs. I used to like those too, and I feel the same way you do now. We are just so flooded with content that we began to hate on the old things. Wonder how the “best travel video” will look like in 5 years from now..
wow.. first of all i loved the overall style .. calm and grounded loved it., keep it up amazing work. content like this will surely get attention in coming days. .... also please do share your knowledge and skills with us... via some guide video if possible. thanks
You know, I've been waiting and waiting for the iPhone to improve to the point where I can leave my Sony cameras at home during travel. While there's still great benefit to lugging it around for true depth of field bokeh, and a larger sensor for much greater low-light performance, videos like yours make me feel like we're there. I've been holding on to my 12 Pro Max for some time now but I think I'm ready to jump back in for the 16 in a few months time. Amazing work, impressive grading and composing.
Just to nerd out for a moment, you're shooting ProRes via the Blackmagic app, with the Sandmarc 58mm and nd. Edits on Davinci but no dehancer. How are you attaching the nd to the sandmarc, and also, it seems you have a bit of halation happening in the highlights. Is that a product of the sandmarc or is that produced in post? Again, nice work sir
@@antnguyen love the enthusiasm! Re: the halation yes somehow the sandmarc gives you a bit of that which I love! It’s more prominent when you attach it to the built in telephoto
@@vedroelcitra Damn. Okay. I was comparing it with the moment lens equivalent but since I'll be shooting film as well in Japan come November, I think I'll lean into what Sandmarc has to offer. Love your work, hope you blow up soon, highly underrated channel right now.
@@antnguyen i’d say both moment and sandmarc will do the job. It’s just sandmarc is slightly cheaper and gives you free phone case hahaha. Enjoy your trip!
@@vedroelcitra im caving and biting the bullet to shamelessly steal your whole setup lmaoo i was lucky enough to find a pretty affordable used gobe nd filter, so here’s to hoping the quality lives up to their current urth selves 🤞 can i ask what your inspirations are? do you watch any Japanese cinema, like Koreeda perhaps?
sorry i keep commenting 😭 one last question i swear…… when shooting log do you recommend overexposing or underexposing? im hearing contradicting advice. is it dependent on the camera app you use maybe? i think someone said the native camera app tends to overexpose so shoot under. when i change the colorspace to apple log in resolve with footage from the blackmagic app, my footage was underexposed, so curious to hear your thoughts! thanks!!
Over here trying to not ball my eyes out during the 02. sequence. Nostalgic, gentle, and soft. Great stuff! I'm going in November and this sold my on going the route of filming with an iPhone 15 Pro. Were you using a tripod on the locked off shots? What case / grip were you using?
Thank you, Shiraoi is such a nice small town. You can do with any camera you're comfortable with, with iPhone just means that you don't need to bring any other gear. Just stay as steady with your hand, Davinci can do "camera lock" effect for you so you don't need to bring tripod. My setup is Sandmarc 58mm + their case that comes with it, and a Manfrotto smart phone clamp for extra grip
Great video all around. Would love a breakdown of your iPhone settings. Was this in native camera app or third party app (e.g. Blackmagic). The aspect ratio really adds to the whole vibe!
this is great!!! i have the same phone and i’m thinking about buying the lens. but i was wondering, could you please film some samples only using the sensor with the nd filter?
@@MoneylessSociety yes in prores log. I found some reference photos that I like, in this case from Japanese photographer Hamada Hideaki, learn the color and try to recreate it
You can only do an overlay for the aspect ratio as a guide. The footage you get will still be in 16:9. THen when you edit you put another overlay layer. Hope it helps
@@vedroelcitra Thanks for the reply. Very inspiring to see what's possible with iPhone with just a couple of accessories. It would be awesome to see a tutorial of iPhone workflow.
oh and also as someone travelling to Japan as well, is it difficult to learn how to expose properly on the go (i'm assuming ISO and the ND filter are the two things we need to adjust for the most part right?) , or would you say it is a fairly simple process to kind of point and shoot in a way?
@@gksecond If you're still new, I suggest just go with the built in iPhone lens, play with it and see how you get used to it. It can still give you amazing quality. The 58mm is just "cherry on top". If I have to choose, I'd take the ND filter over the 58mm lens anytime. ND will give you the motion blur, that will set your videos apart from "the amateur phone look". It's not as simple as point and shoot. But once you get used to it, it'll be pretty easy and you know how to anticipate the moments. Personally, I was quite frantic using it for the first day, but after that it was fine. Give some time to build your muscle memory to operate it, if that makes sense. Yes, most of the time only adjust the ISO and the ND filter. Enjoy your Japan trip!
@@vedroelcitra thank you so much in taking the time for your detailed response! have given a sub - hope to see more of your filmmaking in the future :)
I'm so fucking jealous at this perfection. Can anything remotely similar be done on a Samsung S23 Ultra? I have bought a Sony A7IV now anyway, I hope I can get close to that with a professional camera LOL
