Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

It will never be obsolete as long as long guns exist. The oxford dictionary defines obsolete as no longer being produced or used. In 2023 it ranked #9 among the most sold caliber rifles in the US. It was ahead of the 300 Win Mag, 7-08, 243, and several other well known cartridges. It's not going anywhere for a long, long time.

I could write a book on why the 30-06 is superior to all these new gimmick cartridges. I probably should. It is still superior for most big game save the largest african game, and won't be seriously challenged anytime soon. It has the perfect recipe of caliber, bullet weight and momentum, good bc's, easy to shoot moderate recoil, reasonably flat trajectory out to 500 yards, and can be loaded well with tons of different powders as well as being a great host for bp and cast lead because of the larger case capacity and ability shoot 220 grain lead RN bullets well. The case life for reloading is 2-3x as good as any of the newer cartridges out there, i'm on 27 reloads (yes.. 27) for some nosler brass, finger annealing every 4th round or so and expect ≈15 more loads from that batch of brass. The barrel life is extremely high because it is generally loaded to reletively lower pressures. The moderate velocities match up to perfect on-game bullet performance for most types and brands of bullets. The noise level from a 22'' barrel is moderate compared to magnums. It is still the number one recommended cartridge by the Alaskan dept of fish and game for hunting everything in alsaka... And is generally the number one recomended cartridge by outfitters for everything from mule deer to moose across the west, new england and Alaska... Yada, yada... 30-06 is going no where... The gun and ammo companies want it to go away, they would love to force you into some new rifles, new ammo and new reloading equipment by making the ammo expensive or scarce etc... but it will just make the ammo and gun companies obsolete. Even Bear Creek Arsenal just came out with a new AR platform rifle in 30-06 and 270 win. They can see the writing on the wall... Remington, winchester, vista outdoors, etc better think twice about trying to pressure hunters away from the 308, 270, and 30-06... They are not even close to the only game in town anymore...

The 30-06 was originally a US Military cartridge, so its max pressure was set to be conservative, even in 1906. It was expected to be used in harsh conditions and well-used weapons with somewhat inconsistent ammo. They built in a significant safety margin. Even almost half a century later, the military-based 308 set only a couple thousand psi higher for the same reasons. The 270 was designed well after the 30-06 and was a hunting cartridge, so pressures were pushed a bit. It tuned out the 270's chamber pressure was pushed up more than realized. There is also a strange artifact of the "copper crusher" pressure testing method used at the time that under-reports pressures in some instances. When it was developed, the 270 registered only 4% higher pressure than the 30-06 using the old method (52,000 cup vs 50,000 cup). When the more accurate piezoelectric pressure transducers were used, the actual increase turned out to be over 8% (65,000 psi vs 60,000 psi).

Back in the 1990's, I had a Winchester M-70 30-06. I zeroed it in with 165 gr Trophy Bonded Bullets that Federal loaded then. I then went out to 200 yards and shot a group. I hit all my bullets about 1.5 inches above the point of aim, and the group size for all five shots came out to 1.35 inches. Not bad at all. Since I was moving to Alaska for work, I wanted a 06. I shot several caribou Black Tail Deer and a couple of moose with it, but I also had other rifles. No matter where in the state I went, every store I went to would have some ammo, and 30-06 was always on the shelf in some form. Usually 165 or 180 loads. These days, I shoot a 7mm RM, which is nothing more than a flatter shooting 30-06. My only regret was not having Mel Forbes make a Model 24 in 30-06 for me. He passed on a few days ago. Wilson Combat bought NULA, and well, let's just say I am not a fan of the "improvements". As for guns and shooting in general on the political front we are doing pretty good with the beat back. I am betting that GCA-68 is going to get overturned and the NFA is going to get scaled back. Time will tell.

Hey Ron, I’ll help you with some ideas for getting out of the old rut of gunwriters: comparing calibers. It has to be the most mundane and irrelevant topic to obsess over, with people agonizing about minute details that don’t end up mattering in the real world. So instead, how about taking a hint from the shotgun and archery worlds and talk about technique? About gun fit? About things like eye dominance? About gun care and repair? Teach people to be able to do more with what they already have. That doesn’t sell new stuff and unnecessary gear, but it is what people want. I’ll send you the bill for these ideas later.

You didn't fool me. I KNEW you would not be poo pooing the 30-06. (I was only worried a little lol) My favorite and most accurate rifle I ever owned was a 30-06 in a Browning 1885. I don't hunt open areas much (New Hampshire woods mostly) but I wanted a field/power line rifle for those few times I found myself there in deer season. My Falling block Browning would consistently clover leaf 3 shots at 100 yds off the bench, using Factory loads. (Fed Premium 180 grain) which was good enough for this old timer. Of course the 26 inch (or was it 28? Can't remember now) barrel was a plus, along with shorter overall length than bolt action rifles. Thanks again for the video. Keep up the great work.

I get 2750 fps out of it with no signs of exeess pressure. This translates to 1490 foot pounds of energy at 900 yards. Wind drift is not ideal, and the trajectory is beginning to look like a rainbow. If you learn to shoot it, it delivers more than one would expect.

@@georgesakellaropoulos8162 I live in the real world out in Oregon. The part of the state I live In, a 200 yard shock is a pretty long shot. I go to Eastern Oregon. It's like the Midwest. You can shoot four or five 600 yd. I've lost track of how many four point bucks. I've killed both blacktail and muley and I've killed several elk. The longest shot I've ever shot a buck with was 440 yd. Ironically, I used a 270 WSM. I held 16" over his back, and dropped it into his heart. That's about 30 BIG BUCKS, many Record book bucks. -- I don't see the hype to LONG RANGE SHOOTING. Most bucks I take are under 100 yards. They can't tell the difference in the exit hole. To me a GOOD BONDED BULLET is more important than a long sleek sexy bullet. I don't see the difference in holding 5' over a bucks back or holding 20'. (LONGER MAXIMUM POINT BLANK RANGE). that is real, the rest, not so much.

@jwdundon I've only done this from a bench. I'm not good enough to shoot game at distances much over 300 yards, maybe under ideal conditions 400, but this bullet expands and holds together in wet paper at 900.

The idea that "every cartridge goes obsolete eventually" flies in the face of the 45-70 he mentioned at the beginning. We still have plenty of cartridges with us that began with the inception of the metal cartridge. I tend to agree with Mr Spomer in theory, but we haven't seen that play out yet in reality.

30-06 will never go away, it's just to versatile! A bunch of cartridges can be made from the 30-06 including 45 Raptor.. It can do 95% of what the 300 Win-mag can do, the recoil is on the verge of being too much in a heavy loading and can be downloaded easily!

I'm a firm believer in the .270 win and the 30-06 Springfield for Alaska game. The brown bear (or Griz) still has me guessing if it is enough, only from lack of experience. My dad shot the 30-06 while I used a .270 I have taken many moose, black bear, deer and elk with my .270 and well the 30-06 with my dad has done that and more. What I have found to be the most important aspect, when it comes to hunting, is know your gun. i.e. know what 200 yards looks like in your scope, know what 400 yards looks like, know the hold over....The spec's are what they are, i get it. Put a man behind a rifle that knows how to use it. Priceless. I've seen bear drop on a dead run at 300 yards, yes it was the 30-06 and a man that used it is whole life. He knew that gun!

Thank you for this video. You offer a great exposition of the whys and wherefores of the .30-'06 cartridge. Like many others, I believe the .30-'06 cartridge will not go obsolete for many, many years, and for (in no particular order) good reasons: 1) Availability. The ammo is everywhere. 2) Reliability. It gets the job done on virtually everything on the North American continent, with the possible exception of the Polar Bear. 3) Versatility. You can handload for everything from Groundhog to Grizzly. 4) Shootability. Its recoil can be handled by all but the most recoil-sensitive shooters. 5) Historic Ubiquity. There are far too many .30-'06 rifles in the hands of far too many shooters. No one is suddenly going to decide to throw away the Model 70 that has been putting Whitetails in the freezer for three generations.

I’m currently experimenting with 190gr LR (long range) bullets and a few of the hotter powders to take advantage of the low pressures. The rifle can handle a lot more so I’m seeing what real performance can be achieved. Why? One, I already own several good rifles. Two, I have all the hand loading equipment and Three, I have some time to dedicate to this project. I’ve had great results with 180gr core locked bullets on elk, bear and moose. The heavier 220gr bullets are great short range bullets in the brush and timber to avoid small stick deflection. I also want to repeat small primer experimentation which the Vortex podcast team debated. This would aid many of us reloader s in obtaining primers when the supply chain runs low on large primers. Keep up the great videos!!

I have a custom Mauser on a Spandau Mauser 1908 action built as a lightweight rifle with a full 24" barrel and a beautiful wood stock but weighing just 6 3/4 lbs empty and without a scope. Kicks a bit but I love it. Am getting a Kaps 4x scope for it from Germany. My old eyes prefer fixed magnification low power scopes and I enjoy stalking closer and not playing Simo Hayha on deer. Hopefully, the '06 will never go obsolete. We still hunt with muzzleloaders and a friend even had a gunsmith in Sweden build him a matchlock that he's taken deer with. If it does become obsolete, I will be long gone by then. And that will be a good thing at least as far as I am concerned.

Mr. Spomer, With a good chamber and micrometer one should be able to hand-load a .30-06 to some pretty high velocities while checking for case head expansion as an indication of pressure limits. Barnes published data for the 130 grain TTX is going above 3,200 FPS. Using published data the .30-06 is on the heels of the .300 Win Mag.

Having been a Gunsmith for 45+ yrs. I have to cite the makes and models of just the Rifles that have passed thru my shop. Consider how many of the following "will be pointing at any enemy from behind every tree" should they dare to invade the USA. 1903/1903-A1 Springfields, (and their variants), AND, the number of P17 Eddystone variants; AND the number of M1 Garands all added to the Remington Mod. 742 / 760s; Rem. 700s; Win. Mod. 70s; Sav. Mod110s; Browning Bolt, Lever and Semi-auto Actions plus any number or other Mfgrs. (too numerous to mention), (none of which are likely to 'go away' regardless of how hard the "Anti-Gunners" keep trying). SO, some Factory Loading of the 30-06 Cartridge will be found on the shelves of virtually every small town Hardware/General store in the USA, (even if Big Box Stores don't carry it). THEN, fast forward to the Spring of 2024 AND, now it's available in America's 'so called' Favorite Rifle, the AR-10 platform. 30-06, Obsolete, I think not !

One point about the Garand - it was originally going to be a 0.276 and a 10 round clip. McArthur knew war was coming and didn't want a bunch of different calibers in the supply line, so he insisted that the Garand be chambered in 30-06, which reduced the clip capacity to 8. This was done, but the Springfield load (174 grains at 2700 fps) was beating the guns up too fast. There's some controversy about this part, but I learned that the 30-06 was downloaded for the Garand to a 147 grain bullet at 2700 fps. to preserve its useful life. The spec difference between 30-03 cases and the 30-06 cases is just one millimeter. The performance difference between the two is quite significant. Also, the reason you never see a 30-03 rifle is because all the rifles already made were recalled and rechambered. Also, there's a sabot available to allow the use of 22 caliber bullets.

I'm a hand loader and I run 2 rifle calibers, .308 & .223. Those 2 do anything I need or want. And I tend to load my rounds way light because I don't need to p!$$ extra powder down the barrel and most my shots are close because of foliage. or just plinking at paper or cans. I have some 85 grain tips that I can plink with 15/20 gr. of powder that could send a yote or crow to the other side. and be so pleasant to shoot. And I can run those in a 06 or a .308 case. (Do your own research as my loads could squib in "your" or other rifles) That's the other thing, loading milder rounds not only loads me more ammo per pound of powder, but they are... I will use the word graceful for color. rather than being full tilt bulging my cases. The last upside to loading light, is re-sizing brass is a breeze. But having a cartridge that you can run 15 grains or 60 grains of powder, fits the definition of versatile in my book. And obsolete or not I don't care if they stop making ammo tonight.

The future of the 30-06 is in copper solid ammunition. The 30-06 has a longer neck and deeper shoulder than the 308 Winchester allowing for the room for the larger and heavier solid copper bullets, than of course their lead counter parts. This makes the 30-06 more suited for loading solid copper bullets, a bonus for states that require lead-free hunting like California. There are other composite bullets who need the larger space in the 30-06 neck in order for the bullet to have the proper weight and aerodynamics to fly with decent ballistic coefficients. While these larger, longer bullets can be loaded in cartridges like 308, 300 Savage, and 270 Winchester, they would be too long or too light weight to give ideal terminal performance.

No major tips required, Westcoast. That 165 TSX (or TTSX) is devastating out of a 30-06. Actually a bit excessive for deer (perfect for elk in my estimation) so you might want to try a 150-gr. or even 130-grain if wind deflection isn't a major concern. Guys are using the 130-gr. Barnes on elk with satisfactory results.

Over my many years of hunting and shooting I have come to realize why the 30-06 is the standard by which all other cartridges are judged. I have ventured into the realm of other cartridges over the years and have owned many firearms. As I aged I have reduced the number of firearms I own and have settled on three cartridges as my go to for big game hunting. First the grandfather of the 30-06, the 7x57, then the 30-06 and for massive game I use the 35 Whelen which is based on the 30-06 case. I need no other rifles and have sold off all the magnum rifles I have owned. The 30-06 will not be obsolete in my household and family but the new cartridges won't even get into my home.

I believe you are right about the maximum pressure. During the second half of the nineteenth century, engineers were trained to err well on the side of caution. Bridges were often designed to handle more than twice their recommended load and steam engines were designed to hold much more than their recommended pressures. So it is only logical to believe firearms were designed to handle a lot more than their recommended pressures. This emphasis on safety might be partly due to lawsuits that steamed from overloading bridges and all the firearms and riverboat steam engines being pushed too far and blowing up before the Civil War. P.S. Old timers said "OTT" for zero to prevent it being confused with the letter "O". It is the same as drawing a line through a zero to distinguish it from a "O".

Thanks Ron great video. I been shooting 3006 for 45+ years and hunt Canadian moose mostly and the odd Muley. I've taken bear, deer and wolves also. I wasn't surprised at the ballistic comparison but was wondering about the recoil comparison that could influence the smaller hunters at the rifle range. (mind you that the last thing going thru your mind when you got a moose in your sight) . I always recommend the 30-06 to new hunters as it has a gamete of load size for every game, but since form is critical for accuracy and the smaller/new hunters tend to flinch I now recommend the 308 (or reload light recoil 30-06 plinker for them to practice) since the 308 also has good selection of rounds, similar performance and tend to be a little gentler on those shoulders. Again great work!
@RonSpomerOutdoors
@RonSpomerOutdoors 19 дней назад
Practicing with lighter bullets in the 30-06 is a fine way to minimize recoil. Handloaders, of course, can really dial down the velocity for mild practice rounds. To minimize recoil from full-power hunting rounds, try lighter all-copper hollow points like Barnes, Cutting Edge, Hammer Hunters, etc. A 130-gr. copper penetrates as well as most traditional 150- to 165-grain lead core bullets.

Ron , I once commented on the availability of the 3006 ammunition stating that you can find it nearly anywhere. A gentleman commented that he was on an Elk hunt and found a box of 3006 on the trail . With the abundance of rifles chambered in 3006 it would not be too expensive to change out the barrel to a 35 Whelen . I'm presently mulling that over.
