This video features a complete disassembly and reassembly of the Epson 2030 home cinema Projector to fix overheating issues. The over heating LED indicator flashes and the projector continuously shuts down. This projector actually overheated to the point of melting plastic and almost catches on fire. The cover is completely removed, the fans are tested and fine dust clear from the internal Circuit boards and colour wheel. The final step was to add an additional cooling fan above the bulb housing. The bulb is replaced and the projector tested.

OH MY GOD YOU ARE KILLING ME!!! I am currently working on replacing the INTAKE fan. There is nothing online, so I was SOOOOOO happy to find your video. The intake fan is the only thing you didn't take apart!!!!! Fuck my life!

Hi Glenn! Nice job. Your exhaust fan is probably suffering from a lack of airfoil shape due to the heat. They kind of domino fail on themselves. The RPM will stay correct but your CFM will plummet. Just make sure you are no pushing heat back into the projector with your added fan. Those polarizer and prism coatings will melt quickly if they are heated and Epson was "great" in building the optic block to be unserviceable... Have a Great New Year!

Thanks FixitFrank. Never thought about the deformation of the blades. I’m not sure if I understand how my additional fan would push heat back into the projector. I can feel the heat coming out above the fan so I assume it’s only going to add to the overall cooling. Perhaps you could explain. This was actually my first time taking a home cinema projector apart, so any tips are appreciated. I Thank you for your interest 😀

@@MacGyver0692 I'm sorry, I should have clarified. Your fan addition is moving air away from the heat source. Your implementation should be fine. Sometimes when people add external fans, they try and use the cooler ambient air and blow it inside not realizing that makes it harder to get the heat out. It was more of a "if anyone else is thinking of adding fans" comment. However I would suggest just checking the temps near the lens, maybe off to the side nearer the lamp. You are changing the airflow pattern but looking at where you put the fan, I don't see that doing anything more than maybe drawing more air through the whole projector which should not a bad thing. I suspect the design engineers wished they could put a fan right there. If the external fan ever becomes a hassle, I suspect replacing the exhaust fan, and lamp blower fan would restore the original level of cooling but if it's working and I suspect its not leaking much light, run it and enjoy the projector.

@@FixitFrank I can see why the projector engineers opted not to use this exterior fan idea. It doesn’t look very sleek, it does leak light and adds some noise. Oh well, it works for now and was an interesting project. Thanks again.

@@FixitFrank Hi, I have the 2030 and its time for a new blub and I replaced the side vent and air blew any dust I love it, and want it to last would you recommend that I get a can from computers and position it below blowing air up or pulling air down, It gets hot it has not yet melted the plastic but it get very hot, not to mention the room get hot, who would need heat in the winter with this in a room. thank you in advance for your time.

I wouldn’t advise doing what I did unless your projector is already screwed. I actually thought I was going to end up buying a new projector but thought I’d have a goal before I threw it out. I was lucky it went well. I actually made the video with the idea that I would need it for reassembly and then realize that someone else mind benefit if I published it on RU-vid. Sorry, I’m not sure about the Bluetooth mode question. I’m not actually much of an expert. Thanks for your comment good luck

Any ideas what could be causing the 'temp' & 'lamp' lights to flash on after only 15-20 seconds of being on? This happens 2-3 seconds after the fan starts up, and before the lamp starts to light up, so there is nothing even starting to get warm yet. I've replaced the lamp just in case there might have been a faulty sensor in there. Mine is the EHTW8000. Had it ten years but used it very little. There is probably less than 300 hours of mileage on it.

I’m still using mine and run my external cooling continuously. It works steady for a month, but then suddenly begins flashing blue and shuts down. Sometimes minutes after start up, it’s not even hot and after doing this a few times it goes back to normal operation. My theory is there is actually something wrong with the main board. I think it’s Incorrectly signalling the overheat shut down mode. Sometimes I unplug it and make it reset and eventually it gets back to proper operation. When my first problem occurred with overheating, it really needed a cleaning. There was lots of accumulated dust throughout the entire projector so you might try taking it apart and cleaning it thoroughly. Also make sure your filter gets clean regularly. I suspect you may have tried this already, but just in case thought I’d mention it. Good luck sorry I couldn’t be of more help. Thanks for your comment 😊

@@MacGyver0692 Yes I opened it up with the intention of giving it a good cleaning but it was surprisingly clean inside already. Probably because I haven't really used it much. I serviced consumer electronics back in the 90s so I'm comfortable doing basic checks but there is only so much I can do without the schematic diagram. I even changed the thermostat that sits on the outer housing of the lamp module just in case, but no luck. I agree the CPU is getting a shutdown flag from somewhere, but where? Maybe a temp sensor in the power supply also, but I didn't want to venture inside that far without a schematic. I ended up getting a new projector, which is exactly what Epson wants me to do.

Awesome fix! How did you end up powering the fan? Was it with the wall plug you showed at the start, or did you splice into a 12v wire in the projector? I’m about to add another fan to my Acer H6510BD but was trying to figure out how to power it. It’s neater if I don’t have to plug in another wall socket and use the splice method, but I don’t want to create any future problems by overloading etc

Funny, I was thinking of that tonight as I turned on my projector and simultaneously reached over and flipped the switch on the power bar that the fan transformers plugged into. Quite often I forget to turn on the fan and occasionally the overheat sensor shuts it down. I was thinking of tying it into the existing fan, but I think the existing fan was not getting the proper message from the control board causing it to run incorrectly. Thanks for your question. Good luck

@@MacGyver0692 Thanks for the reply! Ahh yes I thought I might run into that problem (of forgetting to turn on the extra fan as well) I've been testing my wiring for the last few nights and I've managed to splice my front fan into the blower fan - both are getting 6.64V on the red wire, black is ground, and yellow is sending ~1.6V back to the motherboard as a sensor and it's been working so far. I believe I've worked out the amps correctly: the blower fan takes 0.15a, the exhaust fan takes 0.36a (total 0.51a), and I'm doing this with the assumption that most computer motherboards can supply 1.00a from the fan header, so I'm well under that. I'm about to put all the projector casing back on and do a proper test (and watch some long movies!) so we'll see how it holds up! (Sorry if that's too much information haha!)
