Mark you are a lifesaver! I have an Epson ES-400 and for the longest time I could not get the settings correct to run my black & white postcards through without them looking like I ran them through a Xerox copy machine. I had to actually photograph them, wash everything through lightroom and photoshop, change the file names (to match the SKU#) and then upload them to eBay. I just bought three more small lots of B&W Navy ships (battleships and Aircraft Carriers). I was not looking forward to having to photograph them all and go through all those other steps. I changed that one setting (Image Type) from "Auto" to "Color" and BAM! My B&W postcards came out almost perfect. I tweaked the brightness contrast and gamma settings (in the advanced settings menu) just a little and then ran a series of both B&W and Color cards. They ALL came out perfect! Thank you so much brother!
thank you so very very much for this video. I just got the 800 at Best Buy for 329+ an extra $32 off because I bought it with a brand new Best Buy credit card. Your video was so helpful and so many ways and I appreciate the time you put into this!!
Great instructional video Mark. It will be a minute or two before I upgrade but your review of setting has lit a fire 🔥 under my butt to get my ES 400 II setting changed today. Thank you so much.
Thank you for the very helpful instructional video. Mind me just ask, as I am an banknote collector, what do you think about this machine for scanning banknotes? There is a possibility for a jam or for the bill to loose it’s uncirculated condition? Thank you for the response!!
I have never put a bank note thru mine, so I really cannot say, but I think if I was very careful it might work. Somethings might just have to go in a flat bed scanner.
@@SMPostcards I didnt wait and bought the same machine. It works like a charm for me! Scanning all bills in 600dpi the machine itself can add back and front in one simple image, the color and detail are great! Thanks for showing how works with your postcards. You made me buy it! 😁
Glad to hear! Hey wondering if you could shoot a short picture with your phone on scanning some bills and send it to contact@smpostcards.com. I would love to show how you do this on a show n tell segment of a video. Up to you.
Highly recommend the Digital Scanner Setting Download for whatever model you have!! Made a world of difference and would have taken me months of trial and error to figure out color settings.
I might have missed you mentioning this so don't hold it against me if you did. The scanner also has a dust detector so if it detects something on the scanner it will stop and have you clean it. It will also notify you after 5k scans to clean the scanner. Usually I know whether or not the scanner is dirty so sometimes I just force a reset without cleaning. Just like with any scanner you need to watch your scans for those scan lines. In the scanner setting preview page you can quickly select single sided or double sided (if you're doing items you only want one side scanned). Once the preview is done loading, you can actually rotate your images there. I've done that a few times when I load everything in upside down, I can easily flip it all. When I was doing print ads (standard sized) I fed about 200 in (stacks of 50) before it basically said "hold on a second I need a moment to catch up." Overall, its a great scanner and worth the money. I've done about 30k scans on mine and minimal issues. You will find that chromes and linens tend to get stuck to one another but that issue is what you see in just about any scanner.
Thanks for Watching! I do not do Sports Cards, but have used it many times for Trade Cards same paper stock I believe used on Sports cards and works fine. If going to use one of the Epson Scanners ES-400 or ES-580w, check my KO-FI Shop to download the free Settings Document I put together for them. Here is the link to that shop ko-fi.com/smpostcards
52:55 - I miss being able to find soft dust covers for modern electronics. I must have had one of those custom slip-on vinyl covers for each of my old computers/printers/etc in the 80's. Kept everything nice and tidy.
I use to have a Fujitsu. I definitely prefer my epson 580w. That gray border is great. I’ve rescanned all the Victorian trade cards I did with the Fujitsu and have redone about half my Christmas postcards. I think The gray border makes cards pop out better and shows deckle edges and chips and wear to the edges better than the Fujitsu
I find it interesting you scan them with the long axis parallel to the scanner.. pretty sure the instructions were opposite with the 500W II but maybe I will try a run your way. Less to flip if they're landscape cards.
I am excited to detect turning dbl feed off because I have had many "jam" issues before...also doing color instead of auto..been putting all my RPPC (not many) through flatbed because they we're coming out well. Do you find printing with a border makes a difference?
Yes, changing it to "Color" fixes the problem most people have with RPPCs, The "Dbl Detect" I was finding also was detecting the stamps etc. and would stop a lot, so once I turn it off I had fewer stops. I think the "Border" does help, it is just another thing to help the buyer see the condition. I have thousands of cards that I scanned with the ScanSnap without it, and they sell as well.
What are your thoughts about other documents? I have some Civil War letters. Do you think it would be safe to scan them? Thanks for sharing. Great thorough video!
Most will do fine I have run in to just a few issues with very very light paper and dummy I am I tried to scan them and they bunched up. I would do some tests to make sure. Also would scan at 600 or higher to slow it down some as well. Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for your review. Because of the current price of th 500W, which is higher than the 580W, I thought it was a better model. Can the scanner make on ID Cards?
I can't seem to find the Cardboard Gold Postcard sleeves in a 5000 case. Do you know where they are in stock? I really don't want to buy small quantities as I have a lot of Postcards! Also I can't find the top loaders for more valuable Postcards. I appreciate any leads when you have time. Thanks
I'm not sure what you mean by "Cardboard Gold Postcard sleeves" You can check out our Ko-FI Shop we have sleeves and Toploaders and if a member get 40% discount on item price. ko-fi.com/smpostcards/shop
Great! I'm still in town until the early afternoon tomorrow, then gone for week. So if interested and purchase anything I can still get it out tomorrow morning for you.
Hello, great content, here is a new follower. I just wonder if you scan your trading cards with the scaner and if there are any issues? Thanks in advance.
Thank you for another great video! So timely as I recently purchased the Epson 400 II. It was on sale and the 580W was not, so I opted for cash in the pocket over whistles and bells. My biggest problem with the 400 is the red factor as you were talking about. My question is, in you Ko-fi Shop does the Epson Settings Digital Download include the color and gamma adjustments? I have played with the settings a lot, but still can't get them right.
Yes, the 400 document on Page 5 has what I currently have setup on my 400. I'm not the best at colors but these settings has worked for me. I would have waited on the 580W longer, but with the price dropped and I melted and grabbed it! Thanks for watching!
@@SMPostcards Thanks!!!!! I did the same thing you did. Saw the sale, thought about getting it delivered, but could order online and get it at Best Buy in an hour. I have been wanting one for a long time so felt like Christmas walking out of Best Buy with my little printer.
Will be interesting to see how the rollers hold up with a power user like you. Old paper, especially with writing on it, has got to be rough on them over time. I'd assume spares are available.
I'm looking for a good scanner as I am adding postcards to my store. Once the settings are set, do you have to make any changes based on the types of cards. IE: 1 setting for chrome, another setting for linen, another setting for real photo?
The best Duplex Scanner I'm using right now is the Epson ES-580W. I have settings in my KO-FI store for the 580W and 400 II (Free Downloads) just set and forget. No need to make changes for different types of Cards. Here is the link to the Epson Scanner settings - ko-fi.com/smpostcards/shop/epsonscannersettings
@SMPostcards your scans seem a little too dark in the dark areas (pitch black). Are the originals like that? What do you think about details and contrast? Would you get better results in that regards with a flatbed scanner?
I have never had anyone say anything about a scan of postcards I have listed. Flatbed scanners are too slow. Plus people view on different monitors, Phones etc. I scan at 400 DPI also.
I'm curious if you considered the 680w, or if there's a reason (other than cost) that you chose the 580w? You can also purchase the 580w through Epson's site as a certified refurbished product with warranty for (I believe) $300 USD. Other regional sites seem to have them too (Canada is $400 CAD). Have you thought about getting a color calibration card to run through the scanner and tweak the colors?
Yes, it was more budget related decision for the 580W. The 680W would be great for photos but for postcards on eBay the 580W will meet my needs. Color card I look into that. I wanted to get a brand new one not refurbished, even tho that is route some people go. There are so many options out there I just tend to pick one and go.
Have you check the Epson Website? I don't see any other setting that would cause that, does;nt mean I don't see a setting for it. Sound like The setting I have on the document work fine for mine wonder if there is a mechanical issue. How bad it it?
ESTOY USANDO EL MODELO 580W EN MI TRABAJO. TENGO MUCHAS HOJAS PARA ESCANEAR PERO NECESITO QUE QUEDE POR CADA HOJA UN PDF. AL ESCANEAR TODOS LO PAPALES SOLO ME HACE 1 PDF CON TODAS LAS HOJAS. NECESITO QUE QUEDE 1 A 1 ALGUIEN QUE ME PUEDA AYUDAR POR FAVOR. I AM USING THE 580W MODEL AT MY WORK. I HAVE MANY SHEETS TO SCAN BUT I NEED ONE PDF FOR EACH SHEET. WHEN SCANNING ALL THE PAPERS IT ONLY MAKES 1 PDF WITH ALL THE SHEETS. I NEED IT TO BE 1 TO 1 SOMEONE WHO CAN HELP ME PLEASE.
Go into Epson Scan Smart >>> Settings >>> Save Settings >>> PDF Options >>> Uncheck "Create File with All Pages" Make sure when scanning that PDF is selected for save.
