In this lesson, you will learn what the equations of projectile motion are and how to use them in physics. Projectile motion refers to an object moving in two dimensions (vertically and horizontally) under the effect of a gravitational force. Projectile covers the motion of balls and rockets flying in space or in the atmosphere, as well as the motion of a thrown rock or other object. The equations of projectile motion allow is to predict the position and velocity of an object at an point in the future along its trajectory after the motion begins..

As a former active duty USMC artillery officer, you just made my year by publishing this video. I studied physics at the Naval Academy before I was commissioned and then attended the Field Artillery Officers' Basic Course at Fort Sill after I graduated from The Basic School for Marine officers at Quantico. This video brings back a lot of memories and is inspiring me to relearn trigonometry and calculus. Thank you!!!!!!

Wow ! That's is amazing . So If I shoot a high power bullet velocity, at say 4000fps the bullet will hit the ground at the same time as if I was to just drop it from the same height at 0 velocity. That is difficult to understand. But this is true .however, you would have to drop the bullet from the top of the arch hieght. Excellent teaching. I've purchased 2 of your DVDs about 6 years ago. I have a comment you should tell the students, that the Sign of G, depende on your frame of reference, or datum. If your on top of a platform throwing kicking or dropping a ball, you could use G as positive, but if it's on the ground then you could use Y as positive up and then G will be negative, so it all depends on your frame of reference, and the equations as well will change. Gravity always points down, so if you choose your frame of reference for Y positive up, your G will be negative, if you use your frame of reference for Y positive down, your G will be positive as well. But you put such passion in what you are doing, thar you are truly a great professor. I congratulate you. I wish I had while I was in College professor like you.

2nd equation is confusing cus the equations of motion I w know are V = U + at V² = U² + 2aS S = Ut + ½at² S = ½(U+V)t Where S is the distance V is final velocity U is initial velocity a is acceleration ❓
@MimiSonter
@MimiSonter 7 месяцев назад
You are right, but this is where you have missed it. S=ut+1/2at^2. S in the above equation is change in displacement, which can be replaced as Xf-Xi. Substituting the above for S you will now have Xf-Xi=ut+1/2at^2 (making Xf the subject of the formula you will now have) Xf=Xi+ut+1/2at^2.💯💯💯

Mr. Jayson, from your videos on resolution of forces and trigonometry, I had sensed what might be happening in projectile motion before I watched your this video. Anyways I would like to genuinely thank you for your commitment! I do have a question in my mind regarding the acceleration in the x direction that why the acceleration in the x direction was not included or mentioned in the video that was applied in the first place by the person hurling the object in projectile motion. I mean there has to be an acceleration because a force was applied otherwise there wouldn't be any motion in the x direction, or was it so negligible that we ditched it completely?

we all know that a projectile trajectory (on earth) is never a parabola
@josip.harasic
@josip.harasic Год назад
Realno, zato što postoji otpor kretanju projektila (trenje u vazduhu), stoga je trajektorija modufikovana faktorom e^-kt, (k zavisi od otpora sredine). Realistically, because there is resistance to the movement of the projectile (friction in the air), therefore the trajectory is modified by the factor e^-kt, (k depends on the resistance of the medium).
@gide5489
@gide5489 Год назад
@@josip.harasic The "resistance of air" depends on a lot of parameters including the form of the projectile, its bearing, on the velocity itself (supersonic or not)... In any case it can't be neglected, we never assume that a trajectory is parabolic, unless you do not care about killing people far from your target.

As usual the diagram is grossly misleading. Firearms books use this almost exact demo to explain the path of a projectile from a firearm. The correct path is a drooping arc with the droop rapidly steepening as it gets further form the gun. Books show the projectile traveling through the path described here and much of the firearms community believe a projectile leaves the muzzle and rises above the "line of departure". This is not so.
@MathAndScience
@MathAndScience 2 года назад
I’m not sure what you’re going on about but I never mentioned firearms in this lesson. The diagram is not misleading, the diagram is that of throwing an object up from the ground at an angle that is why it rises up and then comes down.
@robertwatson818
@robertwatson818 2 года назад
@@MathAndScience Firearms publications are full of misconceptions concerning the path of a projectile after leaving the barrel. Most people believe the projectile rises---when it does not and it is because of diagrams as we see here. All firearms publications use this same diagram to explain the behavior of a projectile. The original path of the projectile would be "line of departure" which it never gets above. Would you discuss this and clarify the confusion?
