That was exactly my first thought when she came out with RIDING BOOTS. He said she used to ride when she was a KID, so there's no way she would have had fitting riding boots just conveniently lying around if she didn't know this was going to happen. It's just a scripted "reality" TV show, filmed and written by amateurs. Like most of the channels doing this sort of stuff.

Plaited manes work just as good for a horse in all disciplines. But people are too lazy to plait them, so they roach them. The point is NOT the comfort of the owner, it's the fact that these manes help horses to cool down, and projects them from the sun. Rather plait the mane, and spend a bit of extra time with your horse, than roaching it, because you don't like to get up twenty minutes earlier. @@Ambelica

Honestly I don't think that the price is too much. depending on location ofc, some places have higher prices, but I'm not aware of how it is in Maryland. As of course I don't live there and I wouldn't know. But $220 a month for 4 lessons is not a lot. That's $55 per lesson. I live in Colorado and my instructor charges about $65 per lesson. It only gets expensive when you join their show team from what I saw. I think the riding facility in general truly isn't bad. They can improve on some things for sure in this video, like show her to hold the reins, fix her stirrup length, and how to have her feet sit properly in the stirrups. When I consider the rest of the barns that are mostly covered on Raleigh's channel, these people are honestly refreshing to see. I also don't really agree with the mane roaching but at least it's not done to all the horses for sure. Just trying to look at the better side of things because this barn doesn't seem like they're trying to do any harm. It seems like they're just not aware as to why roaching isn't the best idea and I'd love to just give them the benefit of the doubt.

Nothing wrong with backing up a horse by the tail. In general it actually shoes good level training because the horse can move off of a wide range of different pressures correctly. Also if you are unloading a horse by yourself it might even be preferable to unload from the back (always untie the front first) because then you can guide your horse out to prevent it from falling off the side of the ramp. Whether you back up with the rope a sound or the tail doesn't matter.
@amandakinneard1225
@amandakinneard1225 Год назад
I agree, I taught my horse to unload this way and it's just his cue that he's allowed to step out of the trailer. I don't yank his tail, just a mild amount of pressure. He also self loads into the trailer so I don't need help to get him loaded up by myself.

They put me on a horse, both went up front, and took me on a crazy fast ride thru dunes and soft sand. They chitchated with each other and never even checked to see how I was doing. I swear we were at a 45 degree angle on some of those dunes! @@poppymason-smith1051 There's a saying that goes: Green and green equals black and blue. I've even heard Raleigh say it when discussing this idea. It means that inexperienced riders, meaning those with only a few years, like 5, should not ride young horses. And no way should they own them! At 2 they are too young to even be ridden. They shouldn't even be started under saddle until 3 years old. Some people even say 4. At 3 and 4 they still are immature emotionally and intellectually. Plus they still need a lot of training. Training is a lifelong process, but at that age there are still a lot of the basics that they need to work on, and a newish rider will not have the skills to teach them. Those take so many years to learn. It helps a lot though if the rider/owner has someone who is an expert that they can learn from. A very young horse will still be bursting with too much energy, and will often play dumb games. Try to get away with stuff, and not have a long attention span. They will also not have had enough time to become desensitized to enough different things and they will spook. Big spooks and often. Spooking or shying is a very dangerous thing because it's so sudden and so often causes riders to fall off. Even the best riders. I've known 3 excellent riders that have all fallen and been crippled for life. I heard 1 of them died. I don't know the details, but I heard all 3 had broken their necks. All 3 were professional riders in 1 way or another. One studied at the famous French Riding School. I wouldn't be surprised if all 3 were from falls when the horse shied away suddenly when something startled them. So I'm not sure exactly what they do recommend. Some people ride every day, so in 5 years they may learn much more than a weekend rider does. I think that Raleigh said a newish rider needs a horse about 10 years old. They will be so much smarter, calmer, and safer than a 3 or 4 year old is. Some people are different and some breeds are too. But there's a limit to how much any newer rider can know, and how their demeanor is, and how calming they can be to their horse. But the issue of training is the biggest 1 in my mind. A newer rider won't even know what to teach them, never mind how to teach it. RU-vid will be no help at all. Your horse is constantly learning, for it's whole life. And if you are not actually training them, then you are untraining them, and teaching the wrong things. You need to have a very thorough knowledge of the concepts of Pressure And Release, and specific techniques involved, and be using them constantly. This is on top of everything you will (or I would) need to be learning about horse husbandry and riding. Only very experienced riders are going to do a good job with a very young horse, and so a less experienced rider won't enjoy the process as much. An older horse is so much more forgiving. And a 10 year old is not actually old. If I could go back in time, and have any of the horses I've ridden, the one I'd chose was 12 years old. Still very spunky and extremely energetic. She used to never walk, just prance, and constantly wanted to just run, without ever stopping. But she was so well behaved, just a dream to ride. She always slowed or stopped when asked. Never took off without being asked to. Never scared me. And I've been plenty scared by other horses. I rode her bareback, and if I needed to get off I could always get back on, because she didn't try to play dumb games. That was important when we were miles from the barn. I've seen so many horses come back without their rider. Once the girl was far away with a broken leg. I hope this makes sense to you. I'm not making it up. It's what I've heard said a lot, and I'm sure it's right. I'm sure I'm older than you are, but I'm not experienced enough to have a very young horse and really enjoy them. And isn't that why we want a horse? To enjoy the process? I'm not trying to put you down. Not at all. Any first time horse owner is much too inexperienced for a 2 year old, or even most 4 year olds, depending on the breed. Unless maybe if they are a Clydesdale or a Gypsy Vanner (Cob.) Even then I'd still go for an older horse of 6 or 8. Because although those types are quieter, an untrained horse is still an untrained horse. They need to spend their first 6 or 8 to 10 years learning from an experienced person. And when a person is new to the whole process, they need a trained and calmer, smarter horse. If not, it just won't be the same wonderful, warm experience that brings so much joy to people. I really wish you loads of luck though! ❤🐴🐎🐴❤

That grass could have herbacide all over it and poison the horse. Some horses rub their manes because of bad allergies and hogging it actually helps that. Especially, in hot humid climate, and some cart horse and polo ponies have that to keep their manes from rubbing or being ripped out. Or some vets do recommend it for some medical conditions, like sweet itch. That's also not a protecting the horses eyes form the sun. The eye covers that do that are very expensive and there's alot more to them. And they could take it to a boarding facility after this so they could actually own it.

that’s what i thought too.. one of my horses needs his mane hogged during winter as he gets super itchy and had bad allergies (winter is our dry season, so allergies are worse) he gets sooo uncomfortable if i don’t hog it.

I'm ok with it... it was just a few hours and made her day. The horse owner was there the whole time, and I'm sure only let her ride without assistance for a little bit. Her stirrups may have been wrong length, just an oversight.. :0) It also made everyone's day at the drive through. If she loves horses, she should take lessons.

Could you maybe make a video about the pros and cons about bit less bridles? I love riding bitless but I know it has its own problems too and I’d love to hear more of it! And also about different hackamore types and what they’re meant to and all that would be really interesting!
@cattymajiv
@cattymajiv 11 месяцев назад
Yes! That would be great! There are already MANY of them on RU-vid, but every single one of the roughly 50 I've seen is kind of poorly done. (That's my favorite topic!) Some of those are really informative, but are done without showing examples, which is a huge problem. Some try to show examples but they're too far from the camera to be seen properly. And some are done in a very dark room, etc, etc, etc. Nobody shows bridles and bits in a way that you can see them clearly, and at the same time gives a thorough discussion of them. One or 2 guys even have a horse skull that works great to illustrate some the different concepts, but a lot of info gets left out. Some show lots of examples of bits and bridles, but leave huge chunks of info out. There must be 1000 different bits, and you'd need to have at least 1 of every major group, and explain exactly how it works. You can't just do bitted and bitless. Even among bitless bridles there are a ton of very different kinds, and they work in different ways. It's a very complicated and in depth topic. So I think that's too much work for her. She does free flowing videos with just her thoughts. To do a really good job of that discussion it would take a huge amount of planning. Many of the people use predone diagrams they made earlier to explain the actions of the different parts. When I used to teach, the other teachers and I agreed that for every hour of class time it took at least 3 hours of planning. A thorough discussion of bits and bitless would take AT LEAST an hour to present, and at least 3 hours to prepare. So there's 4 hours already. Now you have to add I donno how much time to edit and upload it. At least another hour. So 5 hours? Not gonna happen. I really do wish somebody who had already done it would critique their own video, or better yet have someone else critique it, and then do an improved one. We always used to say that the first time we taught any topic it was a disaster, just like most of those videos are. The second time we improved on it a lot, but it wasn't until the third time we taught it that we did a really good job, without leaving out big chunks, or screwing up our examples. Even with editting of the video it wouldn't likely be good enough the second go around. If only people rehearsed them with live audiences, like we always did. People underestimate so much how much work is involved in teaching, or any kind of speaking. The best videos are always really well rehearsed. And that's ON TOP OF the 3 hours of preparation per hour of class time, or presentation time. Just writing the script and gathering the materials to show and arranging it all in preparation is a massive undertaking! Maybe I should do one and sell it to the horse channels! LOL! Like anyone would be willing to pay for all that time I would have to invest! Lol! It is such a great idea though. I would be willing to pay to watch it! ❤🐴🐎🐴❤ PS. I changed my mind. I'm too much of a perfectionist. And people don't need a complete book about it. I'd be interested to hear her viewpoint.

Thank you for teaching others (and me :)) the right backround about horseriding and not only the ride itself. :)
@cattymajiv
@cattymajiv 11 месяцев назад
Yes. I said that too in a different post. But it depends on what is meant by hackamore. Some types are ok, like a Bosal, but any hackamore with shanks is a bad thing, no matter who uses it. Dangerous and cruel. It used to be that the word hackamore refered only to the shanked ones, but now they are using it to refer to all bitless bridles. I think the old way was a bit better, with bitless being called bitless, bosals being called bosals, and shanked bitless being called hackamores, but I don't feel strongly about it. I think it just made more sense that way. Of course there are other shanked bits too, like Curb bits and Tom Thumbs. All shanked bits are bad, and should be outlawed. It's never ok to use a mechanical device to force a horse to do something. If that type of thing is necessary, there is a huge hole in their training, and that needs to be fixed by starting from scratch. Mechanical devices are just pure laziness and bad horsemanship. Dressage just burns me up, with shanked bits and spurs! Same thing in Big Lick, but BL is just one solid mass of horse abuse. The shanks in BL must be 8 inches or more! Together with so many other severe forms of abuse in BL. Big Lick needs to be stopped, and dressage needs to be fixed, with torture devices outlawed.

My horse used to get anxious loading and unloading, but he never seemed to mind the trailering. Through lessons and training at a facility specializing in groundwork and horsemanship, he loads and unloads with no problems or anxiety! My horse is now an "auto" loader and unloader. He will walk straight onto the trailer and stand in that spot until I tell him he can leave. Then he backs out of the trailer and pauses to wait for me with his back feet off the ramp and front feet on the ramp. I mention this because I, too, "pull" my horse tail to unload. That is just my queue to let him know the bar is down. From my understanding, this is a standard queue. My horse used to sit up on the butt bar and rock the trailer, so "pulling" his tail has saved him and me from lots of injuries. He now knows not to back up until I have messed with his tail. This has also helped my horse to relax in the trailer, so when he needs to stand in the trailer, he isn't constantly rocking on the butt bar to leave. Many natural horsemanship trainers do the same.

Well.... I trained my horse to back out of the trailer when I gently tug his tail. I often trailer alone. It's way safer that he have a clear cue so that he doesn't back out before I'm ready. Super handy actually. He loads himself on the trailer too. I wouldn't say that's bad horsemanship at all, just a different way to train. And I roach my horse's mane. He hates it being long - rubs it, gets super itchy, etc. He is way more comfy with it roached. Just saying. It's not necessarily lazy. I'm way more upset about people who pull manes... that's not humane in my opinion. Trim it with scissors, roach it with clippers, or take good care of it long.

I’m 27- wanted a horse since 3 years old. Lessons throughout half of my childhood. Then in highschool rejoined by mucking stalls for one of my stepdad’s friend’s daughter who was 15+ years older than me. I try to find as many groom/stablehand positions currently that pay like crap, and don’t offer riding usually. It’s been rough. I don’t expect to own or even lease a horse until I’m in my mid 30’s at the earliest if I can figure out financial success. It makes me so pessimistic sometimes. Best wishes to all horse lovers searching for their path. You will find it, just keep trying. You will find a generous barn owner/trainer one day, even if they can only offer you work and a horse/lessons temporarily, you will get there. ❤

First: to get your first horse you should ride it in a arena not in a small back yarden or a drive through (just to say that I know nothing about this family) second:idk how much times she fell off but if she never did or 1 or 2 times that isn’t gonna be good because she could get really scared and fall off a lot and she might not want the horse anymore I mean I ride horses but not in my garden? I don’t think she knows how to hold the reins right, some people have been riding for so long they don’t have a horse for me it sounds like they just got the horse for the sake of fame I hope she knows how to canter or gallop or smt because there is a chance a horse could buck, like there are way better places to start to ride a horse it ain’t like a horse wants to live in a small garden for the rest of its life like I’ve seen loads of my friends get pets and they didn’t know where to play,ride, let it run around etc like I feel like these people are gonna ride the horse around the drive throughs and that and not bring them to fields or arenas

My sister worked with horses in Florida. Many were discards from rich families, including Smiley Teeth, whose teeth were so mangled he appeared to be sporting a toothy grin when the ranch first got him. Smiley was given proper medical attention but the name stuck ; not all horses are lucky enough to be sent into this kind of situation. Some are just sent to the glue factory or to a butcher instead. Others die of neglect, like he would’ve if my sister’s place hadn’t adopted him..
