"The good trainer can make the horse do almost anything he wants, the great trainer can get the horse to want to do it." Perfect line
@viennayoungpianistsyoungpi7770
A "great trainer" in the way you mean it, is not trainer but a horseman, a partner to the horse, but definitely not a trainer. The idea of training a horse is the opposite of what this great horseman is doing!

How wonderful, congratulations! Monty is one of the gentle pioneers of understanding and working with horse language to great effect in human horse interactions. Have you also watched some of Klaus Hempfling’s work, and that of Buck Brannaman, and their master student Steven Young? Each has a little more to add to the wonderful harmony between our two species. Let us know how the relationship grows please.

@@peachtea1607It's like with 8bil people in the world, different people come up with similar ideas, how wild. Darwin isn't the only person who came up with the theory of evolution, he was just the first Western English-speaking person to get it to print. Monty hadn't even considered writing a book about it until Queen Elizabeth II asked him to. The idea of someone being "first" at something because it's on the internet first is hilarious, considering there was no internet in 1950. Or 60. Or 70. Or 80. 90, it started to become accessible. Soooo 30 years ago vs him being 89 now, hmm. Also the idea that "wild horses" are vicious creatures that attack and try to kill people, please 🙄 My uncle followed Monty Roberts after reading his first book. 20 years of using non-violent, positive methods later and our stallion at the time was so gentle I have pictures of me as a 4-year-old up alone on his back, and I never, ever had anything but love from him. Even with mares stabled right beside him, I never had a problem handling him even when I started doing morning turn-outs and evening turn-ins/feeding when I was 12. It was a rude as hecc awakening when I was at another stable and saw what they did to horses. You don't slap a toddler, you don't shake one, you don't drag their head under something, you don't try to seriously scare them. If you do, you're a massive asshole. Same with horses. Worst thing I EVER had to do was hold an ear, gently, so we could put a gastric tube up a horse's nose.

This guy is a cheat.Everyone that does all his work in a round pen (and there are lots of them) and never ventures out and show us how it works in an open space, I consider to be a cheat. This horse in particular has not even seen a wild horse. Listen to what he says. This horse, a gelding by the way, has been in this place only 6 times but, with novices trainers. Really? So you let novices work with a "wild" horse in such a small place? That must be easy then. 🙂

I remember going to see Monty Roberts when he visited NZ quite a few years ago (maybe 25yrs). I still recall in awe when I joined up using his method on a stallion that was left by his owner. He hated people. But using the Join Up method had 'Grumpy Smurf' as I nicknamed him, following me like a puppy. When the farrier came out to tend to my horse, I asked if he could take a look at Grumpy. He was hesitant because he knew what he was like. He was speechless when I called Grumpy over and he happily stood there while the farrier did what he had to to try and bring his hooves back into shape. So finding this video is a beautiful reminder of what Monty teaches and that it does work :)

I can't believe so many of you fall for this BS. Maybe that's because you haven't seen a wild horse before? Pay attention to what he said. Its a gelding that has been trained in this place 6 times but with novice trainers. How is it a wild horse, then. And, so you let novice students work with wild stallions? To me, a wild horse is a stallion that has just been brought from the wilderness and hasn't seen a man before. Well, try to put that lead rope around his belly then. Or, that halter on his head and see how that goes. Yes, you can rub his forehead as much as you like. Just for the reference. This is a wild horse. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-H2L51J_6SWM.html

This is the technique of training a horse that does not involve the harsh “breaking” that people used to use. He’s getting him used to the sights and smells and sounds of being directed by a human. Lunging around as you call it is showing the horse that the trainer is asking for something specific and the horses trying to figure out what it is. By directing him in a certain direction the horse is actually gaining trust that the trainer is not gonna hurt him just guide him

Pamela, I do love your concern for the lovely mustang who Monty spent 3 days gentling. Yes, I have seen the documentary, I do not believe he came close to killing the horse and whilst I also feel torn about separating the horse from his herd, I also believe the education for so many was important in getting humans to treat horses differently. Considering how traumatic mustang roundups are (helicopters, separation the herd, shipped to kill pens); I do think it was an important thing Monty did with the horse and know he honors horses way more than he is a salesman.
